Scenes from the Move

February 17, 2010

Hiring movers is definitely the way to go! Today’s move really wasn’t bad at all. It was a long day, but easy and completely stress-free. And, when it comes to moving, that’s what counts, right? ;-)

Now, Mal and I have our work cut us for us– lots and lots of unpacking!

Our new home is in shambles, but I’ve actually enjoyed unpacking and getting organized. I’m a dork like that! ;-)

Our move was made a million times easier by Michael’s Movers, a moving company that was recommended by a number of local Bostonians via Twitter. Everyone had great things to say about them, so after chatting with the folks at Michael’s and receiving an estimate, Mal and I hired them right away.

The 3-person team from Michael’s Movers had our entire apartment packed in about 4 hours. It was impressive!

While the crew worked, Murphy hung out in his crate.

Poor Murph.

Mid-morning, I snacked on a Jazz apple.

After loading all of our boxes into the truck, the movers wrapped every single piece of furniture to make sure that it arrived safely at our new home. Not a single thing was damaged in the move.

For lunch, Mal and I popped over to PS Gourmet in Southie for egg sandwiches. We both had a major craving for them this afternoon.

IMG_5686.JPG

After lunch, I wanted something sweet, so I munched on a handful of raisins.

IMG_5691.JPG

When we returned from lunch, there wasn’t much more to pack into the truck. The movers were packing machines!

It being lunchtime and all, Mal offered to buy the movers lunch as a thanks for all of their hard work. Isn’t my husband the best?! :-D

So, Mal and I took their sandwich orders and ran across the street to purchase them from a local sub shop. The guys were really appreciative and took a little break from moving to eat lunch.

Before we knew it, our place was nearly empty!

Yay!

On the drive to our new apartment, I bought some peanut M&M’s to snack on. They hit the spot!

IMG_5712.JPG

The movers unpacked our place in about 1.5 hours. It was insane how quickly they did it!

While they worked, I made myself a half of a Swiss, cucumber, and tomato sandwich on whole wheat.

Mal grabbed us burritos from Chipotle for dinner, so it’s time to eat and then continue unpacking.

I’m glad that our move went so smoothly today! It was a total 180 compared to the Move from Hell!

They were speedy!! After your move from Hell, I think you deserved a bit of moving re;ated luck!
It must be so strange seeing your apartment look so empty…I’d find it really creepy! The unpacking bit though is the BEST – I LOVE getting everything organised and neat and it’s so satisfying when it’s all done :)
Have fun with it!

Movers are DEFINITELY the way to go! Good choice! When I moved into my condo I hired movers and they did the entire move (only a 20 minute drive) in 3 hours. It would’ve taken me at least 3 weeks! And that was super sweet of you and Mal to buy the movers lunch. :)

I hope you had a good first night in the new place.

It makes it so much easier to have movers who are efficient! Glad it went well, can’t wait to see the new place!

Really glad your move went well! I move every six months or so to work on film jobs, so I’m at a point where I feel like I can never do it again. I’ve got to just get furnished places or hire movers! Smart idea!

I’m so glad your move went well this time! We hired movers the last time we moved apartments and it was totally worth it. Can’t wait to see what it looks like when you all get settled :)

what an awesome husband you have!! that is such a kind thing of him to get those guys lunch. the world needs more of that! during the summer, my kids LOVE to leave coolers of drinks out for the garbage men (we live in florida and those guys get hot!). and they now always place our cans down right side up with the lids on! just a little kindness goes a long way…
love your new place, by the way. that little stained glass window in the kitchen door rocks!!

Glad it went so smoothly. After moving ourselves the last time we swore we’d hire movers from here on out. After the description you gave I will be really excited to have someone else move my stuff.

Your new apartment looks just as cool as your old one did- and more spacious! You must be happy.

I love that you always had food and snacks ready throughout the day! I probably wouldn’t have been that prepared! It would have been a bag of chips and pizza … though that was BEFORE I lost weight, maybe nowadays it would be different. :-) Or at least I like to think so!

Hopefully Murphy makes the transition okay! We have 5 animals – it would be so tricky to move right now!

I am a fan of movers, they make life so much simpler. Your old apartment looks so sad with nothing in it!

I love your blog and read it all the time. Congrats on the successful move and the book deal! I hope the writing is going well! Under the “ask me anything” topic, I thought I saw that you got Murphy from a breeder and wanted to know what made you decide to go with a breeder to get Murphy instead of adopting a homeless dog from a rescue agency?
