Pros and Cons

February 4, 2010

Goooooood morning!

My wonderful and amazing husband offered to cook me breakfast this morning while I took Murphy outside to do his “business.” Murphy has been so much better getting down to, um, business, so it seemed like a good deal to me! :-D

Mal cooked me an egg sandwich with cheddar cheese and Buffalo sauce on toasted whole wheat Sandwich Thins. It was delicious… and so satisfying! I love how eggs fill me up like that. It’s a different type of fullness than oatmeal.

I also drank a glass of iced coffee with vanilla soy milk with breakfast.

(Don’t ya just love these funky sea life plates?)

Pros and Cons

Last night while celebrating, Mal and I spent a good part of the evening creating and then discussing a pros and cons list for some of the apartments we’ve seen. Apartment hunting is not easy. For the 10+ places we saw, only 3 were worth considering, so we made a list to see our options in “black and white.”

After putting everything down on paper, one apartment, in particular, easily won out. Check out its pro-con list:

Pros:

  • 2-bedroom
  • Dishwasher
  • Washer + dryer
  • Tons of storage
  • Driveway parking
  • Yard for Murphy
  • Closer to work
  • Nice neighborhood
  • Near public transportation
  • Lots of sunlight
  • French doors

Cons:

  • Older apartment
  • Claw-foot tub
  • Not close to gym
  • Further from city

Not too shabby, right? The apartment has so many pros and the cons were ones that we could totally live with for the next couple of years. We’re not moving again until we buy a house, so we really took our time to weigh the pros and cons of this place. I think we might have a winner! :-D

We spoke with our friend, Marie, last night, and she’s going to draw up a lease for us to sign. If everything works out as planned, we’ll be moving February 17th, which is SO SOON! Eek! 8-O I still can’t believe we’re moving AGAIN!

Question of the Day

Do you use pro and con lists to help you make decisions? What was the last pro-con list that you created?

Lists are absolutely the way I make decisions! The pros of your new place look really good…I hope you don’t have to move again for a while!

Claw foot tubs are so pretty! How can that be a con?!

That’s so exciting that you two have narrowed it down to 1 apartment… you’ll be an extra busy lady soon. Last pro and con was deciding between which house to buy… 2 years ago now!

It’s awesome you found your next place to live- Congrats! I use pro and con lists all the time, the last one I made was to help me decide whether to run a marathon or not.

I don’t use pros/cons list but I probably should! Usually I just over think things to death and wear myself out mentally :/ Can’t wait to see pics of the new apt! I know moving can be stressful; my family has done it TOO MANY TIMES.

Love love love the turtle plate!!! I use pro/con lists all the time, but mostly I just have a running list in my head. I do sometimes write it down if I really want to get serious and show it to someone else like the hubs…

Sometimes I do use pro/con lists. I think they can be fairly helpful.

I’m an incessant list-maker, so of course I make pro/con lists. My last list was for leaving my old job and accepting a new one. I think it helped immensely! Congrats on finding renters and selecting the right apartment for you guys and lil Murph!

Like other commenters, I would move the tub to the “pro” list – but to each his own, right?
I have made a pro/con list in the past. I think it’s especially helpful when you’re making a decision with your partner. It helps communicate what you each see as beneficial and negative for whatever decision you’re trying to make!

Hi, Congrats on the new apt! I don’t think anyone asked this, but I was wondering how far the gym will be from your new place? and do you think you will be able to continue with the same workout schedule because of the distance?

Love your blog and I love Murphy, keep the pug pics coming : )

That’s great about the apartment!!

I use pro/con lists often. The last time I did so was when I left my old job. I had to make sure it was the right choice!

Yeah!!!

My mom taught me to make pros and cons lists as a kid so I use it for many decisions even if it is just in my head.

We’re doing the same thing right now as we look for houses to buy. It seems almost worse with this decision though because it’s such a huge commitment! The thing is, there’s no one “perfect” house out there… there will always be “cons”, so I just need to accept that at this point!

What’s wrong with a claw foot tub? I think they are awesome and very stylish! Seems like a great place, congratulations. :)

Why is the claw foot tub a con? I think that would be nice – lots of character :) We always used to write up a pros and cons list when moving. Like you, seeing everything written out made the decision easier to make. Congrats on finding a new place and renters!

Oh, I am happy for you to have found a place. Looking is always fun, but deciding is a bear! I love pros and cons lists. It always seems easier to make decisions like that when you can see it spelled out for you!

I don’t often use pro/con lists, but when I do, it’s for big decisions, like apartment hunting, etc. I like wants/needs lists a lot :-)

I am such a bad decision maker! I usually poll everyone I know and then go back and forth until I eventually decide. It is REALLY annoying and I am working on it….

Ugh, I have to start apartment searching where I live too! I’m trying to find a pet friendly apartment so I can adopt a cat.

I followed over here from Graduate Meghann, and I have to say that I’m so inspired by your blog. I started reading it last night and decided that I HAD to go for a run!

i do make pros and cons lists for important decisions. When it comes to moving/ finding a place to live though I generally make “must have,” “would be nice,” and “no change in hell” lists.

For example, when I was looking at condos easily accessable public transit to work was on the “must have” have list, gas heat/ cooking was on the “would be nice” (I ended up in an all electric building, and a studio or efficiency unit was on the “no way in hell” list.

Also, congrats on getting renters and finding a new place! Good luck with the moving process. After 5 years of college, moving out, moving back home, and moving out again, I’m ready to stay in one place for a long, long time. I hate packing and unpacking and reorganizing!

That’s so exciting that you are moving! It’s really difficult to find the right place. I’m currently trying to move as well and have looked at so many places. I definitely make pro and con lists. I find them very beneficial.

Congrats on settling on a place!!

My BF and I just moved in together about 6 months ago on pretty short notice, so I remember far too well how stressful finding a new place can be! Fortunately the 3rd apartment we checked out was a clear front-runner. After checking it out, we went back to my apartment and talked over the pros and cons over indian food, and we were both comfortable calling the realtor immediately after. Our cons turned out to be non-issues when we moved in about 2 weeks later and we’re both still very happy with the place. We’d also like to stay put until we’re ready to buy!

Good luck!!

I’ve sometimes done pros and cons lists, but usually just in my head, which means I lose track of where I’m at, decision-wise, pretty easily. Perhaps I should give your *real* written list a go next time!

I love my claw foot tub, sometimes it feels like I’m showering in a giant marshmallow (I have 3 white curtains for it). Be careful when you were start using it, sometimes you can trip if you’re not used to how deep it is. It’s great for baths!

What a relief it is to find an apt! Those can definitely be a pain hunting for….so expensive, yet frequently disappointing! My hubby and I are going to look at 2 houses today! I’m sure we will be making out our own pros and cons list soon. I made your baked pumpkin oatmeal this morning except subbed real oats for the instant ones http://www.emilyeatsclean.wordpress.com. They were pretty tasty!!

I would be a pro con girl for house hunting- you’re trying to find a home, but if it’s for anything in my day to day life that only has me crying over a color decision pros and cons go out the window.

check out my giveaway though for some tea pro and conning around green, rooibos and herbal
