Mid-Week Blues

February 24, 2010

Is there such a thing as the Mid-Week Blues? If so, I think I have ‘em. :-?

For some reason, the middle of the week is really tough for me. It’s only Wednesday, but I feel like it should be Friday– yet, Friday is still so far away. Boo! :-? Why can’t we have 3-day weeks?!

Anyway… enough of that!

Lunch

So, I liked my lunch a lot today! :-D

I started with Crofter’s Superfruit Spread + Barney Butter on a whole wheat Sandwich Thin. I also had some almonds on the side.

Then, I munched on some celery and carrot sticks.

And a big ol’ Gala apple. (I miss my Jazz apples, but the Galas were on sale this week.)

Good lunch. Very satisfying.

I also had a piece of yummy pumpkin bread that someone in the office baked. I just couldn’t resist– it had a light frosting glaze on top. Mmm!

Ask Me Anything

Tomorrow is the last day for Ask Me Anything! Friday will be my final post with answers.

Boston has so many yummy pizza places… which is your favorite?

Considering how much I love pizza, this is really bad, but I don’t have a favorite pizza place! Isn’t that terrible?!? Bostonians, if you have a favorite pizza joint, please let me know!

Do you ever get drunk after a few drinks? I notice you never drink that much, but sometimes you mention having a headache the next day. Do you ever let loose?

This comment actually cracked me up because I definitely like to enjoy a drink or two… or three! ;-) In the past, I’ve written posts about VinoVoyage, Harpoonfest, Pub Golf, and my college days when I let loose and drank like a fish. I even won the Blogger You Would Most Want to Make You a Cocktail at the Foodbuzz Festival last fall! ;-) Nowadays, I don’t get drunk all that often (I hate the way I feel the next morning), but I still enjoy a 2-3 cocktails each week.

I find I’m struggling to stay on a healthy diet while living with a B-O-Y. If he buys Milanos and opens a bottle of wine … I want Milanos and glass of wine. Have you ever struggled with this while living with Mal?

Yes, of course! For instance, I never ate potato chips until I lived with Mal, but now, I LOVE Kettle Backyard BBQ chips in a weird, sort of obsessive way!

What works for me is keeping Mal’s unhealthy foods separate from mine. Out of sight, out of mind! Mal has his own cabinet where he keeps all of his junk food. So, in my mind, this cabinet is “off limits” to me, so I’m not tempted and I usually forget that his snacks are even there. Plus, I have my own cabinet where I keep my healthy stuff.

P.S. A lot of your questions have already been answered in previous Ask Me Anything posts, my FAQs, and/or Weight Loss Q & A section. Check to see if your question has already been answered in one of these places.

You and I are on the same wavelength– I was JUST thinking to myself, “Man, is it only Wednesday?!?” It feels like it should be Friday already, for sure!

I definitely get middle of the week blues… I keep thinking it’s Thursday, but then I realize it’s just Wednesday and I still have 2 more days to go instead of 1… oh well ;)

My husband has a cabinet full of goodies too. He can tolerate eating much more sugar than I can and while I feel like I can eat anything out of his cabinet, I choose not to because I know what I would feel like if I did.

isn’t the crofter’s jam awesome? i love their flavors. And I love lunches like that!

Having a separate cabinet is a great idea – as soon as we have a bigger kitchen, I’m doing that!

i totally have the middle-of-the-week blues…is it friday yet? :) love the answers…living with a boy is hard eating-wise. i’ve had to learn over the past 3 years how to eat with a boy in the house :)

It’s so much more difficult to eat healthy now that I live with my husband. …but at the same time I binge less frequently!

Boston is no NYC on the pizza front, but I still find myself missing Upper Crust and Pizza Pier. Upper crust buffalo chicken pizza is TO DIE FOR.

Katie@ Two Lives, One Lifestyle February 24, 2010 at 2:27 pm

I LOVE that separate cabinet idea. I don’t live with my boyf at this point, but I will have to remember that one since I struggle with avoiding his snacks when I visit!

Upper Crust all the way! It’s thin and crispy, and the sauce is full of huge tomato chunks!

Carolyn February 24, 2010 at 2:35 pm

I can’t say I have a favorite pizza place around here. Most of them are chain. :( Now I prefer making them at home. :)

Oh man, my first post-college relationship caused me to gain like 25 lbs, I definitely did not know how to not eat like the bf. Luckily now, my new bf wants to learn to eat like me!

Living with a man just kills your plans of eating healthy all the time. It’s like they were made to tempt you with bad-for-you foods!

Reply

Megan February 24, 2010 at 2:38 pm

Emma’s, Pizzeria Regina (North End location only), and Upper Crust are my favorites! But since I’m originally from CT, I can tell you Boston pizza comes nowhere close to New Haven or New York pizza. I have to wait until I go home to visit to have real pizza. :)

I’ve definitely picked up bad eating habits living with my boyrfiend! All the chips and snacks in the house! Of course, he could say the same because I bake way too much all the time.

I noticed in your last post that you said your usual wake up time is 4:29 am. Would love to know how you manage to do a fabulous job with everything! I’ve been trying to wake up at 5am every morning to either work out or write before I head into work, but I struggle with getting enough sleep and not feeling so worn-down all the time.

Everyone’s going to say Upper Crust is the best pizza, but I think it’s vomit. Santarpio’s and Oggi are where it’s at!

Blerh it’s that Wednesday Feeling – it feels like the week has been going forever, yet we’re only halfway! Hey at least tomorrow is Thursday, which means the next day is Friday…= the weekend! I can’t wait either :)

I get that like that too…today I even slept through my alarm! I like to plan something fun during the week that makes me excited for the half way point. Usually my boyfriend and I go out to dinner on Wednesday nights. I look forward to it through the beginning of the week, and then only 2 more days until the weekend! Have a happy Hump Day!

I didn’t know Boston had so many good pizza places, maybe I’l visit one day just for that reason!

I 100% agree with Melissa- Upper Crust- NO, Santarpios is the best…………….Where is Oggi?

I definitely get the mid-week blues! That is why I am so glad I have a regular girl’s night on Wednesdays :)

I find that so funny about Mal’s junk food cupboard, because at home I have meown shelf in the pantry where my snacks have taken over. They’re kinda faux-healthy snacks though, at least… like roasted/fried broad beans and chickpeas and all my dark chocolate…

Meghan February 24, 2010 at 3:06 pm

best pizza in boston (and i am originally from NJ where the pizza is amazing) is definitely upper crust. the harvard street with grilled chicken on whole wheat dough is THE BEST!!

Reply

Jaclyn@todayslady February 24, 2010 at 3:13 pm

Hahaha I love the question about living with a boy!! We do the same thing at my place. The boys junk food cabinet is high and out of my reach and my good-for-you foods are in a cabinet that’s easy to reach!

p.s. I have the mid-week blues too! Knowing that I’m not alone helps though!

Jules @ eatdrinklivelearn February 24, 2010 at 3:20 pm

When we lived in Boston I loved Pizzeria Regina–the real one in the north end, not the mall ones (though they’re pretty good too!). Santarpio’s in Eastie is supposed to be the best in the city, so I’ve been told, but we never made it over there.

Work treats are my downfall! People are always bringing in sweets or having leftovers from lunch meetings…argh!

I have some cocktail-related Ask Me Anything Questions!

What is your favorite adult beverage to wind down after a day of work? How about for weekend activities like tailgating or camping? For example, my go-to cocktail for either is a ‘healthy’ White Russian made with soy milk, vodka and Kahlua :-)
What is your favorite cocktail? Spirit?

Check out Crazy Dough’s Pizza on 1124 Boylston St. (near Massachusetts Ave.)…it is so goooood! My boyfriend swears it is better than any pizza he has had since living in NYC.

Midweek blues? Yep – they happen, particularly with this craptacular weather in the Northeast. Hello – I want spring!

FYI – Cosmo (March issue I think) just had an interesting article on Wednesday blues. They ever offered a few suggestions to make the day suck less (like making your weekend plans on Wednesays so that you get a little excited about what is in store for the weekend).

Apparently enough people experience it regularly for them to write an article about it!

Oh, tell me about it! Since me and my husband got married 3 years ago I have had to struggle to not dive into his stash of CHOCOLATE (he eats a little after every meal, luckily he has amazing metoblism that allows him to do so) and other snacks! I usually do pretty good until that “time of the month” and then I find myself in there sneaking stuff. =O

Lauren February 24, 2010 at 4:27 pm

Although I’ve been disappointed by their delivery service, (pizza arrives cold b/c the delivery guy/gal drives a bike), The Upper Crust serves up a mean slice of pizza if you go to one of their many locations around the city. I also really like Cambridge 1, which serves super thin wood-grilled flatbread pizza – perfect for a light slice (or two or three ;) ).

Wednesday is my favorite day of the week… We are halfway there!!!! However, I do have the mid week blues today, probably due to the weather.

Great tips on living with a boy! It’s so easy to forget that boys can eat much more than us!
