Good morning!
Thanks for all of your sweet and supportive comments about my hip and knee injuries. I’m obviously very frustrated, but I’m hopeful things will get better.
A lot of people had questions about my injury and how I’ve dealt with it so far. I explain most of the backstory in my FAQ section under “Fitness Questions.” It gives a brief history of how my hip issues started and what I’ve done to get better. It’s been quite the journey!
New Year, New You
As you may know, I set a number of goals for myself in the new year, but I’m not starting on one of them until well after January 1. I’m not beginning my shape-up for the big 3-0 until the middle of the month. What can I say, sometimes I want to be a little different.
Seriously, though, mid-month has a special meaning to me, so it’ll all make sense next week. As far as my other goals, I’m already working on them! Did you set New Year’s resolutions for yourself? How are you doing with them so far?
Breakfast
I don’t know why, but eating an egg sandwich during the work week always feels so special. It’s probably because I only make them on the weekends, so my Monday morning sort of feels weekend-ish now. That’s okay, right?

For my egg sandwich, I used the microwave patty method for my liquid egg whites, added Frank’s buffalo sauce to one side of my Sandwich Thin, and Soya Kaas soy cheese to the other side.
I wasn’t sure what to expect from soy cheese, but I’ll try anything once. I had a coupon for a free Soya Kaas product, so I went with the American Cheddar-style sliced cheese. It actually tasted quite a bit like regular American sliced cheese– a tad processed, but good. It was a nice addition to my breakfast sandwich.

Mal drank the last of the iced coffee this morning, so I made myself a fresh pot of the hot stuff. I added vanilla soy milk and agave nectar to my mug.

Thoughts on Whole Living
Do you read Body + Soul magazine? It’s becoming a new favorite of mine. I especially loved a number of their thoughts on whole living in the December issue and just wanted to share.
Only you can decide the path worth taking.
You can’t grow without pushing your limits.
No one knows what the future will bring. Put your energy into now.
Something Fun

This cartoon really cracked me up!

Question of the Day
If you could make a New Year’s wish for the world, what would it be?

A wish for the world…accept yourself and everyone around you for who they are and not who you wish they could be.
I wish the world would slow down, and we’d all enjoy it equally.
Hmmm a wish for the world…it sounds corny, but for everyone to quite simply get along! I hate reading about all the death and war, it makes life seem so disposable, when it’s not
I want to do it the healthy way though, and so I looovee reading your blog as you have such great food ideas – very inspirational!
New Year’s resolution wise – gain 14 pounds! I’m hoping to document it on my new blog
I can’t wait for your posts next week either, I want to know what’s so good about mid month!
Have a great day
Tina,
I was reading the post you did about starting a blog just now. I have been thinking about purchasing my own domain. Who did you go through to purchase yours? Did you subscribe to get extra “stuff?” How much do u spend to keep your domain if you dont mind me asking. Thanks girl!
Megan
@Megan: I’m with GoDaddy, and I like them a lot. As for the domain, it’s really cheap to get– something like $9 for the year. It’s easy to set up too. If you want GoDaddy to HOST your blog, it’s a quite bit more expensive. But, I assume you have a blog that is hosted through Blogspot or Wordpress, right? If so, you probably don’t need the GoDaddy hosting right away, but it is something to consider down the road. Hope this helps!
I like what Jessica (#1) said about her wish for the world and agree with that.
I have breakfast sandwiches nearly every day. The combo of carbs and protein keeps me satisfied for hours! I also like smearing a wedge of Laughing Cow cheese on my sandwich thin as a butter replacement and to give myself that indulgent creamy, cheesy flavor.
My wish for the world would be that everyone receive the gift of leisure and contemplation. I think that would make us all better, more thoughtful people.
That cartoon just made my morning.
Thank you!
Wow, a new year’s wish for the world is very tough! I wish for all terrorism to be gone. Peace one earth…
Hahah that cartoon is so cute!
Hi Tina,
I always read on the blogs about coupons. Are most of the coupons you receive because of the blog, or do you know of any good places to find them? I’m always looking for a way to cut costs on healthy foods.
@Kristin: It’s a combination of places– through the blog, from readers, from my mom, or I cut them myself from the Sunday paper.
I’m setting goals for 2010, not resolutions. I never keep resolutions anyway! My resolution for the world though is to get healthy and stop eating overly processed/fast foods!
I’m going to have to look into that soy cheese, I’d like to try more vegan options this year and that looks like something I’d enjoy!
My wish for the world would be for everyone to be kinder to others, especially those less fortunate, and to be more tolerant of each other.
Instead of making a big set of New Years resolutions at the beginning of the year, I’m going to do a single monthly challenge. For example, for January, I’m challenging myself to eat Vegan. This is definitelysomething that I don’t think I could do for a YEAR, but it will be interesting (and challenging!) to try it for a month!
I just got a subscription to Body + Soul, and I’m really excited about it!
The words from Body + Soul rock! I love that inspiration. Any positive push in the right direction for me these days is a good thing. I want to inspire and I LOVE getting inspired by people like u daily! Your blog is such a great read. I used to be a runner, I like reading about your training. I remember those days clearly. I never thought I would stop running, but I have. It started to hurt too much. I had a goal to run Boston Marathon aprés kids. been there, done that, running career over. Never thought I would say that! I still workout daily, just different stuff. That breakfast sandwich looks great!!
My wish for the world…That everyone would practice Bikram Yoga! This yoga creates such a peaceful, happy feeling, so if everyone practiced the world would in turn be a more peaceful place! Ok, maybe that’s a stretch but, people would at least be happier
I have too many to fathom, but one is clean water for everyone.
My wish would be for people to talk out their differences, no matter how much time and energy it would take, rather than for people to act out in harsh, violent ways. There are always going to be disagreements among people, and the world would be a much more peaceful place if we could find a peaceful way of reasoning with one another.
Cute comic, btw! I am also looking forward to hearing about why the middle of the month has meaning for you
my new year’s wish would be for everyone to respect each other and be kind to one another!
I’ve never heard of that magazine- but I’m looking for a good one to replace my trashy tabloids
If I could make a New Years wish for the world, it would be to end violence (super hippy/miss usa answer…i know)
I’ve never heard of Soya Kaas – thanks for the heads up! Hah, love the comic
Hope you have a good weekend-ish Monday!
lovely way to start the morning! keep warm over there!
Let me just say, I LOVE your place mat!
Resolution for the world would be for there to be more love; I think that would solve a lot of our problems
I’ve kept my resolution/goal to post on my blog every day..so far
My wish for the world would be that we all take our health seriously and begin to eat better! A homemade egg sandwich beats an egg mcmuffin hands down!
Hahaha I love that cartoon! And good little quotes from the Body + Soul magazine!
I did set some goals for 2010 and unlike past years I mentioned nothing of losing weight or eating right. Why? Because I am focusing on the CANS of weight loss in ’10 Basically instead of focusing on what I can’t have (the food I can’t eat – the time working out takes up that I could be doing something else) I am focusing on the things I can do because of weight loss. My goals are CAN focused instead of Can’t
That egg sandwich looks awesome. Beats my bowl of cereal this morning.
My resolution for the world would be for everyone to find peace in their lives. That would be pretty amazing!
HAHA – that comic cracked me up!
I agree – if I had goals for myself I would boycott and start mid-month as well. I’d feel too much like I was jumping on the bandwagon of crazies with their crash diet plans and new gym memberships. I wish you could hear some of the plans I’ve heard about today! YIKES.
That breakfast looks amazing – it’s exactly what I wanted today but was too lazy to make!
My New Year’s wish for the world would be for people to accept others as they are regardless of religion, age, race, etc…also, mandatory dance parties every hour on the hour.
I think starting mid-month is a great idea. The gym is so crazy right now with the all the New Year’s Resolution people! I have an egg sandwich a lot of mornings and love it. I find that it really fills me up all morning.
I am feeling your literal pain this week Tina. I hurt my lower back two weeks ago and have been having hip/sciatic pain for about a month now. It’s so frustrating!! Especially because I’m supposed to be starting my half marathon training program this week. I do know that I can’t sacrifice my health for the sake of a schedule so I’m going to physical therapy and taking it easy and looking to focus on my nutrition and eating this month, versus fitness. Half marathon is one of my goals, but I have a lot of other “resolutions” too!
I hope you feel better soon!!
i love body + soul – it’s one of my fave mags. i call it body plus soul.
Injuries are SO frustrating, especially when they refuse to heal. My family likes to tell me I’m a 25yr old stuck in an 80 yr old body haha. Just remember that taking care of them now will keep them from popping up again later.
My New Year’s wish for the world would be that no one would go hungry for even a single meal.
I get Body + Soul magazine and I love it. I always find something inspirational to me in every issue. I am constantly ripping out the pages and hanging them in my house. I hope you are feeling better…
You should try the nacho version of the Soya Kaas. When I gave up cheese for awhile, I really liked it in Mexican dishes.
I’ve set some goals and resolutions for myself in 2010, so far I think things are going well. A bit too early to tell though. Great cartoon!
I did a post about my goals and successful goal setting:
http://twopeasandtheirpod.com/10-in-10-healthy-challenge-successful-goal-setting-2/
I love Body and Soul magazine too!
That’s so funny, I was totally craving a breakfast sandwich this morning too! I love savory breakfasts
I really need to get on the breakfast sandwich train. I get so bored with breakfast and this would be the perfect way to spice things up. Plus, it’s quick, which is super important for me in the mornings. Thanks for the idea!
so far so good with my new year’s “resolutions” (I prefer to look at them as goals. I’m more likely to accomplish them that way!). I just graduated college in December, so this new year is kind of a huge new start for me. One of my goals was to start my blog – mission accomplished as of a few days ago! =) I tried not to make my goals *too* grand – they’re realistic, but enough that I’ll have to work for them (which is very motivating).
What are your plans for your 30th? So exciting!!
I LOVE body + soul magazine! They have so many great recipes and tips for overall wellness!
Good luck with those injuries, I know how frustrating they can be!
your breakfast sandwich looks like it kicks mcdonalds booty!
i’d wish for the world to realize the true meaning of life.
I set a few resolutions for myself, but like you postponed them a little! I was in Chicago for New Year’s so I knew I’d have more success getting my resolutions underway if I waited until I was home again. Today is the day they begin!
I love breakfast sandwiches! I feel like they keep me fuller than cereal/oatmeal.
I didn’t set any resolutions, per se, more like goals. And I tried to keep them manageable. One unofficial one is to blog more frequently and be more active in the blogging community.
That cartoon is really funny. I LOVE your counter tops. I don’t know why I’m just noticing them. I need to check out Body & Soul. Sounds like a fun magazine!
Happy New Year! Hip injury–I injured my left hip flexor 5 weeks ago and man, what a bugger. I will think of you as I force myself to workout-carefully
That’d be so cool if we could make a new year’s wish for the whole world! I would wish for people to respect one another regardless of race, religion, gender, ethnicity, etc.
just wait till you hit 40, I run and am 49 and every step is an adventure but I wouldn’t trade running for anything.
