Human Breakfast

January 20, 2010

Good morning!

Murphy wanted me to share his dog breakfast on the blog this morning. Looks delicious, doesn’t it? ;-)

IMG_3492.JPG

(Yes, my dog eats off of a plate… and a Christmas placemat.)

For breakfast, Murphy ate 1 cup of Chicken Soup for the Pet Lover’s Soul (puppy variety) and a bowl of water from the kitchen sink. Best breakfast ever! He scarfs it down every morning!

Ok, time for the human breakfast!

Good morning, Mal!

IMG_3501.JPG

(Poor Mal. He’s such a good sport about me subjecting him to early-morning blog photos.)

For breakfast this morning, I made Mal and me a big batch of apple-cinnamon-raisin-brown sugar oatmeal to share.

IMG_3496.JPG

In the mix:

  • 1 cup oats
  • 1 cup vanilla soy milk
  • 1 cup water
  • 1 apple, diced
  • 1/2 tbsp brown sugar
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • Raisins
  • Cinnamon

The key to apples in oatmeal is cooking them before you add the oats. I cut up the apples, add them to the pot along with some water/milk, and then sprinkle cinnamon and brown sugar on top. I let them cook for about 3-5 minutes before adding the oats, water, soy milk, raisins, etc. The apples come out soft and sweet!

I also had a glass of iced coffee with breakfast.

Sour cream (or plain greek yogurt), sounds weird but it’s really good on lots of stuff!

That is strange on the whole dog eating off the plate. BUt hey whatever works, right? Anyway my favorite that I can’t live without is HOT SAUCE!!!!! My friend bottles his own and is called 301 down in VA beach. http://www.301hotsauce.com/ His sauce has just enough spice and flavor. Yummmm!

Hmm my favorite condiment would be Old Bay seasoning.

I can’t live without basil pesto now… A simple wholewheat pita bread with pesto, avocado, tomato and spinach makes a wonderful lunch! I had fun showing the simple steps to make that sandwich on one of my post!!

Thousand Island. I think it is the best thing ever on sandwiches and for dipping fries into.

Tina, I have a feeling you’ll be drinking hot coffee come summer time. ;)

My fav condiment is a tie between balsamic vinaigrette and zesty italian salad dressings! I find a way to add one (or both) of them to lunch and dinner almost every day.

Brittany January 20, 2010 at 9:20 am

Ketchup!!

Reply

Rose January 20, 2010 at 9:21 am

I have to say ketchup (simply because I use it on everything!)

Ooo fab – I’m going to go order a bottle of that sauce right now! My fave condiment is fresh salsa/pico de gallo. You can eat it with chips, veggies, put it on salads, eggs, etc. So versatile!

without a doubt, KETCHUP.

OR BUTTER – that’s a condiment, right? ;)

My puppy’s breakfast looks similar :)

Favorite condiment would either be ketchup or mustard. I love different kinds of mustard!

Reply

Yummy human breakfast! I agree with cooking the apples before hand. I also like chopping fresh apple and putting it on top of oatmeal…like you would granola. Gives you a nice refreshing crunch!

Aw that is so cute that Murphy eats off of a plate!! My pug does too actually :) It’s because her face can barely fit in her bowl and she can’t get all of the food so she would end up chasing the bowl all over the kitchen floor. Entertaining but pitiful lol

Those apple oats sound great, never thought of that before!

Reply

megan January 20, 2010 at 10:12 am

I make apple oatmeal all the time, but I purposely don’t cook the apples. I love having the crunch. I’m a texture person, so plain oatmeal is too mushy for me, but the apples make it perfect!

Morgan @ Healthy Happy Place January 20, 2010 at 10:12 am

my fav condiment is RANCH DRESSING! I know its totally bad for you but it’s awesome.

Murphy eats A LOT for a little guy. (or maybe it’s just because it’s on a plate?) How much food does he get each day? My dog gets 1/4 cup in the a.m. and 1/4 cup at night.

Hi Tina! I did the treadmill workout that you posted yesterday, and was a big fan. The time passed quickly, and the speeds/intervals were totally doable. Quick question, I know this differs for everyone depending upon weight/height/age, etc., but was curious how many cals you estimate that you burned? The treadmill told me 700+, but I know thats a dead lie. ;)

Tina January 20, 2010 at 10:16 am

@Jillian: Oh, jeez. I have no idea. Sorry!

My favorite condiment is Frank’s Red Hot. Definitely!!

I make apple cinnamon oatmeal as well and love it. I usually nuke the apple chunks for a few minutes in the microwave though, so maybe I’ll try your technique next time!

Tina,

I just saw your pictures of little murphy and his food dish.. I noticed you were feeding him the chicken soup for the dog’s soul and I wanted to mention I also had my little buddy on that as well. She was always hungry, begging and wanted my people food.. Since then I have moved her to “blue buffalo chicken n rice small bites”..It is an all natural and holistic diet that is more well rounded.. I know you appreciate wholefood product so I thought I would mention it.. Also I have listed the website below.. To lil murphy- happy food crunching!
