Black Beer Affair

January 15, 2010

What a FUN night! I love drinking good beer!

The Black Beer Affair at Gordon’s Fine Wine & Liquors was a special evening of impressively dark beer, mingling, and delicious food. Definitely my type of night! ;-)

The appetizers for the event were provided by Jake’s Dixie Roadhouse, a BBQ joint right down the street in Waltham.

Mal and I shared a couple of plates of food. The BBQ wings were SO GOOD!

The Black Beer Affair featured a ton of top shelf beers from Dogfish Head, Mikkeller, Scaldis and many more.

The event also featured personal cellar offerings from Gordons’ beer managers with vintage offerings from Deschutes, Achel, Cantillon, among others. I was definitely impressed by the selection of beers.

I had no idea that I liked dark beer so much. I always expect them to be super heavy and bitter, but this wasn’t the case for a number of the brews that I tried tonight. I was surprised to discover that I really enjoy barley beers, which are generally smooth and slightly sweet.

Mal love the Bourbon County Stout so much, he ended up purchasing a bottle to take home. I don’t like bourbon at all, but this beer was excellent!

The 3-hour event was packed!

I definitely enjoyed my fair share of beer at the event! ;-)

The best beer of the evening (by far!) was a draught sample of Port Brewing’s Older Viscosity, which is one of the world’s finest and rarest beers.

IMG_3172.JPG

It was dark, thick, chocolaty, and nothing like I have ever tasted. It was simply amazing.

I’m eating soup and crackers for dinner– probably some dessert, too! ;-)

See ya tomorrow!

Looks like that was a lot of fun. I’ve never been to a beer tasting event. There’s always “wine tasting” events but never beer ones. And all that food looks so good too. Cheese…yes please!

Fun event. It’s always nice to get to taste a rare “specimen” like that… then again, maybe the good taste of those things is somewhat psychological?!

It looks like you had a great time. I have a question however not concerning beer tasting. I love everything you eat, but what do you suggest for people who don’t live in a mecca of fresh fruit right outside your door, and live in podunk country town where the best option is a harris teeter? Harris teeter is like a extreme lower grocery store nowhere near a whole foods or trader joes. Just Curious? Love your blog! read it every day!

OMG, I would die if I went to a tasting like that! It looks like so much fun!! It seriously makes me want to call our beer delivery guy (yes, we have one, like the milk guy. crazy, I know), and schedule a visit pronto!

You just went to my husband’s dream event – he is a beer fan. He worked for New Holland Brewing in college, has friends at Bell’s, and has brewed his own beer. We had local craft beer at our wedding and always bring tons back from Michigan. (It’s hard to find in Florida.) We need to find an even like this! How fun! (Sadly, I can’t stand beer. Oh well, more for him!)

Morgan @ Life After Bagels January 16, 2010 at 7:36 am

that seems far more classy than the beer tasting I had at my house last weekend, which consisted of me and my bf and a multipack from the organic brewery
