Today totally feels like a Saturday to me. But, it’s Monday, right? I’ve had a weird 24-hours, let me tell you!
So, last night after the Jingle Bell 5k, Mal and I came home to a terrible gasoline-type smell in our apartment. At first, we didn’t think anything of it– we thought it was just something outside on the street– but then the smell got stronger and stronger in our apartment. So, we finally called the gas company to have them come see what was going on. A little while later, two men from National Grid arrived at our apartment. They checked out our place and looked in the basement, but didn’t find anything. They did, however, tell us the smell was not natural gas, so we basically had nothing to worry about it?
At this point in the evening, Mal and I were pretty bugged out. We had talked to the other people in our building and no one knew where the awful smell was coming from. It was really frusterating because our place reeked of gasoline! It smelled like someone was trying to start an old lawnmower. Eww! The smell actually gave me a headache!
Finally, we decided there was nothing else we could to do, so we went to bed with ALL of the windows in our apartment wide open to air out the place while we slept. It was SO COLD!!! I wore layers and layers of clothing to bed and cuddled with my hubby and puppy all night. Thankfully, we woke up this morning and the terrible gas smell was gone.
The whole thing was such an ordeal, Mal decided to take a personal day from work today. We barely slept last at all last night because of the smell, frigid temperatures in our bedroom, and the overall worry that we were breathing toxic fumes all night long. So, after all that, I suppose the silver lining is that Mal and I got to spend today together!
Breakfast
We started our day with breakfast at Mul’s Diner. (You can read my first review here.)

We didn’t want to spend a lot on money on breakfast, so we took advantage of Mul’s “Working Man’s Special,” which is 3 eggs, homefries, choice of sausage or bacon, toast, and coffee for just $3.95. Pretty awesome deal, right?

After a sleepless night, I was more than ready for a cup of coffee. Mmmmm!

Look at this HUGE breakfast!

I ended up giving 2 eggs and all of my bacon to Mal to lighten my plate. There’s no way I could have eaten all that!

Check out Mal’s plate after the transfer of goods. Holy food!

Mid-way through breakfast, our waitress refilled my mug of Snowman Sugar Cookie coffee.

Amazingly, my husband finished his entire breakfast– one and a half “Working’s Man Specials.” I’m still not sure whether I should be disgusted or impressed. When he’s hungry, that boy can eat!

After breakfast, we headed to the Derby Street Shoppes to do our Christmas and grocery shopping. Somehow, we managed to complete ALL of our holiday shopping in less than 2 hours. It was actually pretty amazing.
During our grocery shopping at Whole Foods, Mal and I grabbed a couple of beverages from the cafe. I ordered a Nilla Nut Dream tea, which kept me nice and toasty while we shopped.

A squirt of amber honey sweetened it right up!

We finished our shopping at Derby Street and headed down the road to Shaws, where we completed our grocery shopping. As much as I love Whole Foods, most of their grocery products can be purchased elsewhere at a MUCH cheaper price.
LOOK what I found at Shaws!!!!!

Barney Butter!!!!!!
I had heard rumors that Barney Butter was now available at some Shaws stores in Massachusetts, but I needed to see it with my own eyes before I believed it. I can’t tell you how excited I was to find my beloved Barney Butter at a grocery store! No more shipping costs for me!
Lunch
Of course, Barney Butter was incorporated into this afternoon’s lunch.

What do you think of my new sea life plates? Super cute, right?

Bummer about the gas smell! At least you got to spend the day together with your hubby!
I would love to get all my holiday shopping done in 2 hours! That’s awesome!
Enjoy the rest of your day!
That plate looks pretty cool!! I wish I could get one like this! or I need to go back home and dig out my grandma’s antiques
Yikes! Sorry you didn’t get much sleep but sounds like a productive day.
LOL @ Mul’s (I commented on your previous post about this – my family used to own this restaurant)
Oh my gosh!! I cannot believe you found Barney Butter at SHAWs of all places!!! I am so excited to try and find some soon. I also love the shops at Derby Street – glad you had a great day!
isn’t muls diner THE BEST!? mmmmmmmm love their blueberry pancakes! from one boston resident to another, have you ever been to talk of the town diner in watertown? if the answer is no, GO! SOON!
I love Barney Butter! The Maranatha Almond Butter is too un-spread-able for me. I love Barney Butter’s texture!!
Yikes, crazy about the gas smell. I am glad everything ended up being OK!
I’m glad the gas wasn’t anything serious. On the brightside, you get to spend the day with your hubby!
Just a heads up…awhile back at my workplace we had a really strong “gas” smell. We called facilities and they brought their sensors and told us that it was not gas. Turns out it was dead mice. I would have sworn it was gas…we all thought we were getting headaches from it and everything. Might be something to check out!
do you have a carbon monoxide detector in your apartment?
@tami: Yes, but we smelled gas.
that’s scary about the smells! hope you figure that out….
geez that’s scary and that sucks you guys had such a bad nights sleep but i am happy to hear everything is ok.
i can’t believe you can get all of that food for less than $4! i will def have to check that place out.
congrats on getting all of your christmas shopping done!
I love Boston blogs beacause I know where everything is!! I went to high school right down the street from Derby St. There were many times after school spent study at Panera. Oh the good old days…
I didn’t know Shaws was going to start carrying Barney Butter. How exciting! Which Shaws did you go to? I must find some.
Whoa, that’s freaky about the gas smell! Glad it cleared up for you!
Lucky you to finish shopping in 2 hours!!!! Wanna do mine??
Love your sea life plates!!! And hope you enjoyed your excursion at Derby St! It’s pretty much one of the best things that has ever happened to us here in the South Shore (and a great alternative to ANY mall!)!!!
at least you are focused on the silver lining
breakfast makes everything better!
Now I definitely need to give the samples barney butter sent me another try because I love finding and liking a new nut butter especially when I can buy it in stores.
I wish that I could get out of shipping costs for barney butter! your plates are super cute!
ha, my husband often does the ‘one and a half’ thing. i have no idea where he puts it all.
barney butter is finally in MA? excellent! I’ll have to look for it next time I’m in a Shaws.
Sugar cookie coffee! That sounds yummy!
And so jealous you guys get all the good stuff in the states. In Canada, almond butter costs $12 for a tiny little jar
so exciting about the Barney Butter! I live in Boston too, what Shaws was that?
That sucks about the gas smell but the Barney Butter discovery is awesome! Always some good to balance out the bad.
Yikes! That’s scary…I am glad everything turned out okay!
Scary! Gas smells totally freak me out.
We had one in a rental house I lived in during college. We called the fire department, but it turned out there was a dead mouse behind the fridge that was causing the odor. Ew!!!!
oooh impromptu date day! What fun
oh my goodness – Mal’s breakfast was HUGE!!!! I wouldn’t be able to move if I ate all of that – oh to have a boys metabolism
Loving the sea life plate – its adorable.
Yikes! Glad to hear that smell went away and it was nothing serious. I have this underlying fear of natural gas leaks and carbon monoxide poisoning…not sure why.
Love those plates
Glad you found Barney Butter! It is a staple in my house – I hide it from the rest of the family though – pricey but SO worth it!!
How scary yesterday must have been! The plates are really pretty!!
I love cheap breakfasts!! Also yeah I agree about the wonders of the skinny male bodies and how they can consume massive amounts of food and never gain an ounce. A huge mystery to us all. Ohh btw, glad to hear no gas smelly apartment anymore
That diner looks awesome!! I wish I had known about it when my boyfriend and I were in Boston over the summer. We love diners!!
YUM! Breakfast is my favorite meal to eat out! I would rather go to a hole in the wall diner for some good home cooked breakfast than the most expensive new hot place in town! Your breakfast looks amazing…hum…it might a breakfast for dinner kind of night now!
What’s so special about Barney Butter? Isn’t it just Almond Butter?
That is weird about the gas smell, but I’m glad it’s gone now.
They sell Barney Butter at the Fresh Market by my house but it’s $9, I just can’t justify it right now. Someday…
I need to keep my eyes peeled for Barney Butter at Shaw’s! Glad to hear the gas smell is gone and your apartment is once again warm
.
I’m going to try the Worcester Shaw’s tomorrow for Barney Butter! FYI I’ve also found some organic smooth almond and peanut butters at Ocean State Job Lots! It had palm oil like the BB so no oil to mix or stir.
@Anne T.: Braintree.
Sorry about the rough night and smell. Glad you guys took the day to enjoy yourselves and rest up!
Sorry about the smell, but yay for getting to spend the day with the husband!
We had a horrible gas smell a few months ago. Realized finally I’d left the gas on on the stove. Later that evening a Ghostbusters esque gas employee was surveying the building because a neighbor complained. Whoops!
What a fun way to start your morning. Glad that you got past the smelly gas fumes too.
Corey and Mal should totally have an eating competition when we visit. Corey loves to clean other people’s plates! How the hell he stays so fit is beyond me.
Sadly, I bet I could finish your huge breakfast!!! Unfortunately I don’t have the speedy metabolism of Mal or my boyfriend so I try not to… That’s an amazing breakfast deal though.
I’m definitely looking for Barney butter around town.
I am so in awe of men and their metabolisms.. I used to laugh every time my dad would polish off a “Grand Slam” at Denny’s with ease then ask me for my leftovers.
Sounds like a lovely day
i am sorry about your horrid night! but i am glad you made up for it with a yummy breakfast, snowman sugar cookie coffee sounds delish!
i bet you are happy you found that barney butter
jenna
That’s so weird about the gasoline smell. It sounds like you and Mal had a good day, though.
Eww weird! That would drive me nuts with curiosity! Maybe you’ll find out what it was.
The picture of you drinking from the mug is so cute! You should totally use that as your next profile picture.
