Win a Year’s Worth of Pistachios!

Hi, guys! I had an early NuVal meeting this morning, so I prepared this post last night.

    Another unpublished fun fact is that they are my favorite and I was turned onto them by my 5 year old nephew that asked for a bag of them over candy one Halloween many years ago.

    You would have to eat three plums to get the same amount of fiber found in one serving of pistachios…that is a lot of plum and not a lot of pistachio. Good bang for your buck.

    A serving of pistachio’s have almost the same amount of potassium as half a large banana. Great alternative means of getting your potassium serving! I looooove pistachios.

    I LOVE pistachios! What a great giveaway! My favorite fact is that pistachios have more antioxidants per serving then green tea! Seriously? So a glass of fresh brewed iced green tea and a serving of pistachios and you’re good to go!

    i love that pistachios have phytosterols that fight cholesterol! even though i am an uber healthy eater my mom has high cholesterol – it runs in my family, so i am always keeping an eye out for foods that can help out!

    The fact that I found most interesting was there’s an appetite suppressant found in the monounsaturated fat that makes up 55% of the fat in pistachios! How cool is that?

    I’ve been on such a pistachio kick lately! Mmmmm …

    I also was thrilled about the potassium fact. ThI tend to get leg cramps (charlie horse … whatever!) and always eat bananas (not a fan!) for them!

    Well, being that I am drinking green tea right now and I thought it was the king of all kinds when it came to the most antioxidants, I would have to say that the fact that pistachios beat out green tea in this category was pretty crazy!

    I cannot believe that pistachios have more antioxidants than green tea! That is really something! Pistachios are one of my favorite foods. My sister and I would always get a large bag of pistachios in our stockings at Christmas. Because they were expensive, we didn’t get them often; so pistachios always remind me of a special Christmas treat!

    I found it interesting that pistachios are an ancient nut (“According to Moslem legend, the pistachio nut was one of the foods brought to Earth by Adam”). Also that the origin of the name is Greek.

    My dad has been dealing with diverticulitis issues for about 8 months and has cut all nuts from his diet, but still on the search for fiber. I’ll have to tell him that a “serving of pistachios has 3 grams of fiber. That’s more than most other snack nuts and more than many types of whole fruit.” Do they make creamy pistachio butter?

    I think its awesome that they have cholesterol lowering properties! No idea, and something I am always conscious of after my Mom was found to have high cholesterol. She has been a vegetarian for ten years and is super healthy, but with some additional diet changes she was able to see a major drop in her cholesterol level in just a year with no drugs.

    I think it’s awesome that they have so much potassium. I’ve struggled with keeping down vitamins since getting pregnant so I need all the potassium I can get to help with the aches and cramps of pregnancy.

    I did not know these were such powerhouses! :) I always thought of pistachios as a treat or more of a “fun nut”.
    I love that they are good for the eyes and help protect against blindness. My husband was born with cataracts so I love feeding him foods that are good for the eyes to keep his peepers healthy! :)

    I always forget about pistachios when I buying nuts. My sister eats them everyday (she is allergic to most nuts but not these little green guys). Thanks for bringing them to my attention – the nutrition facts really are stellar. I am going to go and get myself some ASAP.

    I love the fact that people have been eating them for 9,000 years including royalty, but they’ve only been an industry in the United States in 1976. They are certainly very popular now! I knew they were healthy, but it’s great to see all of the specific nutritional benefits.

    Pistachios grow in heavy grape-like clusters surrounded by a fleshy hull. When they ripen in late summer or early autumn, the pistachio kernel fills inside the shell so vigorously that it splits the shell. Sounds like popcorn!

    I had no idea pistachios were high in B vitamins.
    I’m always interested in growth/harvesting as well–so it was interesting to know that pistachios require 1000 hours of temperatures below 45 degrees for a good harvest.

    Pistachios are by FAR my favorite nut! So, I never really thought about what their health benefits were, I just ate them because I enjoyed them. But… now that I find out that they have a bunch of a potassium in them, I’m extra stoked, because I take medication for hypertension daily and I’m urged to eat foods with extra potassium, so now I can add pistachios to my breakfast routine (I get bored of a banana or orange juice every day)!

    Pistachios are my favorite nut to add to granola (they add such lively color, especially when mixed with the ruby of dried cranberries and some dark chocolate chunks for good measure!) I once visited the “pistakion” orchards on the Greek island of Aegina and it was fascinating to see the little clusters of nuts waiting to be harvested…had no idea how healthy they were then!

    I learned that Pistachios have an appetite suppressing compound called oleoylethanolamide was recently discovered in monounsaturated FAT (of all places!). Fifty-five percent of the fat in pistachios is monounsaturated fat.

    Pistachios are green because of they consist of lutein which helps to prevent the most common form of blindness in older adults. Good too know!

    That is AWESOME! :) I always knew that one of my favorite snacks when I’m hiking had to be good for more than just protein and yummy-ness.

    I love natural medicine and learning about the history of foods. It’s fascinating to me that the pistachio has a history of being used as a folk remedy for all sorts of health problems including toothaches and liver issues!

    I really like the fact that Pistachios are one of the oldest flowering nut trees, and are one of the only two nuts mentioned in the Bible (Genesis 43:11). Love the Bible and I especially love when I read references to food and health in it’s many pages of wisdom :)

    The green color in pistachios comes from a compound called lutein which helps to prevent the most common form of blindness in older adults. That is fascinating!

    Pistachios have more potassium than any other nut. Did you know a serving of pistachios has more potassium than half of a large banana? That’s pretty powerful.
