Return of Wheat Berries
There was a return of wheat berries in my breakfast this morning!
I used to eat them all of the time, especially mixed into my oats, but I let them go by the wayside recently.
Yesterday afternoon, I made a big batch of wheat berries, so my supply should last for most of the week. I’m so glad they’re back!

If you’re wondering what wheat berries are all about or how to cook them, check out my post from January.

In the mix:
- 1/3 cup oats
- 1/3 cup wheat berries
- 1 tbsp ground flaxseed meal
- 1 cup water
- 1 banana, sliced
- 2 spoonfuls of peanut butter

There’s likely a glass of iced coffee in my future this morning too. I just wasn’t in the mood for it when I was making my oats. But, now I’m feelin’ an iced coffee craving coming on!

Jessica @ How Sweet It Is — November 23, 2009 @ 8:27 am
I have never had wheat berries! I need to try. Congrats on the Health cameo.
marie — November 23, 2009 @ 8:27 am
I’ve tried almond & cashew butter, oatmeal not from a packet, tofu, various kashi products, and homemade pizza dough. That’s all I can think of at the moment, but I’m sure there’s more.
Stephanie — November 23, 2009 @ 8:35 am
Almond milk & oat bran!
Estela @ Weekly Bite — November 23, 2009 @ 8:36 am
Chia seeds! I had never heard of them before reading food blogs!
Congrats on the health cameo
amanda — November 23, 2009 @ 8:43 am
I just got into reading food and healthy eating blogs. So I haven’t had a chance to try anything super new just yet. However I subscribed to hungry girl’s enewletter and I have tried pb2, vitatops, pizza fit n’ free, spaghetti squash, butternut squash, Almond breeze milk, etc
Kara — November 23, 2009 @ 9:14 am
I got into trying all different types of nut butters from reading the blogs! I’ve become a lot more experimental in general!
Karla — November 23, 2009 @ 9:14 am
I tried Wheat Berries and Kabocha thanks go food blogs! Wheat berries specifically because of your blog, and they’re great!
Malin — November 23, 2009 @ 9:16 am
I tried peanut butter in my oats because of you, and now I don’t eat oats any other way! Love it!
coco — November 23, 2009 @ 9:20 am

ellen eats beets — November 23, 2009 @ 9:21 am
Cashew Butter was a new one for me from food blogs. I also solidified my obsession for greek yogurt
Sarah (Running to Slow Things Down) — November 23, 2009 @ 9:22 am
Almond butter, wheat berries, PUMPKIN, coconut, and many other foods I’m sure. It’s definitely broadened my tastebud horizons.
Pam — November 23, 2009 @ 9:24 am
I am totally going to try not to over or under indulge at thanksgiving this year. Def one of my short term goals. I want to be happy with what I am eating and be able to say Thanksgiving was successful.
your breakfast looks delicious!!!
Britt - Runnerbelle — November 23, 2009 @ 9:28 am
I discovered the fabulousness of almond butter, pumpkin butter, tried more soy products like the silken tofu (made that vanilla cake). Also, I’ve gotten more adventurous in my food combinations.
Sarah — November 23, 2009 @ 9:31 am
Because of food blogs my oatmeal has gotten more creative
But I’ve also tried spaghetti squash, green monsters, Larabars and a ton of other foods because of blogs. Now I want to go get some wheatberries, ha ha!
lindsay — November 23, 2009 @ 9:32 am
I agree with the tight jeans tip! And not just for dining out but for at home too… Eating dinner whle wearing sweatpants may be comfy but it’s easier to overeat without even knowing than if you were wearing ‘real’ clothes
Courtney (The Tasty Balance) — November 23, 2009 @ 9:41 am
I’ve still never made wheat berries myself! I’m going to have try that out soon! Your breakfast looks great!
SweetiePotato — November 23, 2009 @ 9:41 am
Oh gosh, I’ve tried tons of new stuff because of others’ blogs! Before reading, I never had oatmeal with anything other than oats in it! And I’ve also started to make more stuff, like the pizza dough from scratch I made last night and I’ve made a vegetarian burger! It’s so fun to try new stuff in the kitchen!
Jessie — November 23, 2009 @ 9:46 am
I have never been a bog squash eater. But I have tried experimenting with butternut and acorn squash that I had never eaten or cooked with before.
Beth @ DiningAndDishing — November 23, 2009 @ 9:47 am
The first thing I ever tried from reading food blogs is banana oats. I’ve been hooked since!! So good :O)
Julie @ Peanut Butter Fingers — November 23, 2009 @ 9:49 am
i tried spaghetti squash b/c of food blogs & i’m in love! it’s soooo good!
MelissaNibbles — November 23, 2009 @ 9:50 am
Congrats on your feature Tina. That’s a great tip. I used to wear babydoll types of tops or what I would refer to as my “eatin’ clothes”, I’ve since stopped because it’s just not a healthy mindset to go out planning to overeat. Enjoy your Monday!
K — November 23, 2009 @ 9:52 am
I’d say the majority of food I now eat is due to the blogs – tofu, oats, sushi, Clif bars, Greek yogurt, the list goes on! Bloggers have the best tastes
Tasha — November 23, 2009 @ 9:56 am
I am intrigued by wheat berries! I may have to give those a try.
Erin — November 23, 2009 @ 10:03 am
I’m interested to try wheat berries now. But definitely food blogs have influenced me incorporating flax and chia seeds into my daily routine.
diana(mymarblerye) — November 23, 2009 @ 10:05 am

Oats (in all forms), almond butter, clif z bars, carton of egg whites, carrot “fries,” coconut water, goji berries, and the list continues…
Food blogs have really changed my eating habits for the better.
Lindsey @ Eat, Read, Run — November 23, 2009 @ 10:23 am
Pumpkin butter!! And I am obsessed with it. My apple butter and almond butter have gone to the wayside for a bit.
Erin W. — November 23, 2009 @ 10:23 am
Thanks to reading food blogs, I have tried almond milk, pumpkin butter, wheatberries, kombucha tea, green monsters, and my 2 personal faves: dates stuffed with almond butter and overnight oats. YUM!
Anna @ Newlywed, Newly Veg — November 23, 2009 @ 10:25 am
Mmmmm…wheatberries. Love that chew. I have a bag of them in my pantry that I keep forgetting about. I need to put them to use!
Congrats on the appearance in Health, and that’s a great tip! I remember reading an article about Kate Gosselin where she talked about how she always wears a tight belt around her waist to ensure that she doesn’t overeat. I wouldn’t take advice from her in any other realm of life (haha), but she does look awfully good for having had 8 kids!
Anne@ the doctor takes a wife — November 23, 2009 @ 10:30 am
I tried spaghetti squash, thanks to you!! http://drandmrs.blogspot.com/2009/11/spaghetti-squash-success.html
Now I just need to figure out ways to eat it other than like pasta…
Liesl — November 23, 2009 @ 10:33 am
Wheatberries are so yummy, but they take so dang long to cook!
My hubby always asks for them…kinda funny I know.
What new food have I tried…well Kabocha squash! Had to go to TN to get one, but it was delish! Miso…which I also love! And I’m daily inspired to try new things with the foods we always eat which keeps things super exciting. For example, I made your banana cookies last night with a handful of p.b. chips and dark chocolate chips! Yum!
Jen at This Vegetarian Life — November 23, 2009 @ 10:34 am
I embarassed to admit this, but real maple syrup. My hubby is a big fan of the cheap, “Mrs. Butterworth” style stuff. But I finally broke down and got some of the real stuff. There is no going back now!!
Erin — November 23, 2009 @ 10:35 am
Oh god, what haven’t I tried due to food blogs is the question! I would say Kombucha!
Lauren @ Eater not a runner — November 23, 2009 @ 10:38 am
Wheat berries with oatmeal, that is a good idea! I would say oats in a jar….definitely never would have thought of that
Madeline @ Greens and Jeans — November 23, 2009 @ 10:39 am
I was already on the Amazing Greens train, but chia was a new one for me! Now both of them make an appearance in my breakfast every day!

That’s one of my favorite tricks. I used it the other day when we had early thanksgiving. It kept my stuffing splurge to a minimum
Light Delight with TouTou — November 23, 2009 @ 11:14 am
I like wheat berry’s crunchy taste
yet always have hard time find them in WF!
Food Makes Fun Fuel — November 23, 2009 @ 11:15 am
I finally got around to trying the Amazing Grass products and love them! The bars are amazing and not at all funky flavored. i’ve even became an affiliate with the company I liked them so much
Amanda @ Cakes and Ale — November 23, 2009 @ 11:16 am
Spaghetti Sqaush!
I had never made it myself before reading food blogs… and I’m so glad I did. It’s the best! Especially topped with marinara… mmm
Lauren — November 23, 2009 @ 11:24 am
It’s been ages since I last had wheat berries… I gotta make a batch sometime soon! The little chewy gems are one food that I found out about through the blogosphere, as are kale chips and the “oats-in-a-jar” method. I love the food blog world!
Maria — November 23, 2009 @ 11:27 am
We are always trying something new at our house. You got me hooked to Arnold sandwich thins:) We also make our own yogurt and applesauce now!

There are so many foods I have tried since starting to read food blogs! Tofu, almond milk. soymilk, wheatberries, oat bran, polenta, kale, spinach (in smoothies), spaghetti squash, kiwi (with the skin on), and almond butter are just a few of the things I’ve tried. All good things, too!

acorn and spaghetti squash, portobello mushrooms, beans, sweet potatoes, greek yogurt, basically eveything I eat nowadays I’ve tried because I saw it on a blog!
Susan — November 23, 2009 @ 1:07 pm
I tried wheat berries from reading blogs! I didn’t like them in my oats though, I prefer them as a salad base or topper. I think the biggest thing is that before reading blogs, I never put nut butter on top of my oats. Wow. Changed. My. Life.
Tracy — November 23, 2009 @ 1:14 pm
I’ve tried sooo many things b/c of food blogs! Almond butter, greek yogurt, pumpkin everything, dates, green monsters…the list goes on!

Kara — November 23, 2009 @ 2:09 pm
After reading this blog I tried Larabars. I’m not big on pre-packaged foods, but they are super yummy and are a great option for a snack!
I may have to try making my own wheat berries at home. I’ve had them a number of times eating out and always enjoyed them. Have you tried them in ways other than adding them to your oats???
Traci — November 23, 2009 @ 2:35 pm
OKRA! Never tried before but after seeing on the blogs I just had to try it. Verdict? Loved it!

Ya know, I received some wheat berry’s and still have not figured out what to do with them. Maybe I will throw them in my oats like you do

sweet potatoes! I love them now! I used to think i hated them now i’m addicted!
Maggie — November 23, 2009 @ 5:24 pm
Since reading various food blogs I’ve tried almond milk, sprouted grain bread, Greek yogurt, Amazing Grass, and millet. What wonderful foods your blog has opened my eyes to!
I actually had a question too, really for anyone that would like to answer. I’m currently a little under the weather and haven’t felt up to working out the past few days. I’m starting to feel really guilty about it even though I’m sick. When you’re sick do you just rest until you feel completely better or do you push yourself to get back in the gym when you’re still feeling kind of crummy?
Tina — November 23, 2009 @ 5:27 pm
@Maggie: Check out my FAQs!
Camila — November 23, 2009 @ 5:58 pm

Most of the things I now eat are inspired by food blogs! XD Probably because I discovered them when I was in the throes of a serious eating disorder, and all the fun ideas really helped and are continuing to help me on my recovery journey! Let’s see… peanut butter (never ate it before blogs!), oatmeal, pumpkin, hugh jass salads, yogurt and cottage cheese, CINNAMON, flax seed, sweet potatoes and squash, roasted vegetables…
Carly — November 23, 2009 @ 6:56 pm
Nut butter in my oats… AMAZING!!! I also was introduced to Barney Butter (also delicious in a bowl of oats).
Brynne — November 23, 2009 @ 7:18 pm
I have tried SO MUCH because of food blogs – I have only them to thank for my daily obsession with Greek yogurt, plus almond butter, Larabars, Z-Bars, and so much more!
amanda — November 23, 2009 @ 9:26 pm
I was afraid of greek yogurt. I’m not a huge fan of yogurt as it is (only eat it because its good for me), so thick greek yogurt is….yeah. BUT, I tried it after seeing the NuVal score of my old yogurt was so much lower. And guess what? I like it. First, it takes me forever to eat, so I actually enjoy the snack. Second, its so full of protein – wow! Finally, that thick texture is actually yummier that slimy old yogurt.
Also, wheatberries…raw pumpkin seeds….um..
ashleigh — November 23, 2009 @ 10:41 pm
soo many of the foods i eat now i tried because of blogs… for instance: oatmeal, organic PB and AB, amazing grass, chobani, brussel sprouts (gross!), almond milk, larabars.. that’s why i loove reading blogs so much!
