I’ve left you guys hanging long enough! So, here goes…
Remember this post?
A few months ago, Melissa contacted me about a guest post. In her email, she explained that she worked for NuVal, a scientifically-based nutritional scoring system that rates foods on how nutritious they are on a scale of 1-100. Consumers use the scoring system across all products and brands to make informed decisions about food.
With my obvious interest in nutrition and my background in public health, Melissa’s email immediately caught my attention.
As I mentioned in my previous post, I had been thinking about perusing a part-time job for few weeks already, so I knew it couldn’t hurt to ask about a potential opportunity with NuVal. One important thing I have learned in life is that if you want something, ASK! You might as well try to get what you want. I mean, the worst case scenario is a ‘no,’ right? So, I asked Melissa if NuVal was looking to hire anyone.
I knew that I wanted to be involved with this company in some capacity, but what did I want to do? Surprisingly, this decision was easy for me. I knew exactly what I wanted to do– for once in my life!
Melissa worked her magic, and soon I was invited to meet with some of the folks at NuVal for an “exploratory” conversation. We chatted about NuVal’s goals and future plans, and then we discussed how I could benefit the company. So, I put on my game face and pitched myself: I wanted to do social media marketing for NuVal.
I left the meeting feeling pretty confident, but a few weeks later, I still hadn’t heard anything. So, what did I do? I followed-up like a crazy person! I sent examples of my writing, videos about the benefits of social media– I even sent a sample job description! I was probably on the verge of being annoying, but I knew this potential job opportunity would be the perfect fit for me. I just couldn’t let it slip away!
Several weeks and zillion prayers later, I received a job offer from NuVal. (Of course, Mal and I celebrated appropriately!) And, just 24 hours later, I enthusiastically accepted their offer!
Working with the communications team, I will be responsible for NuVal’s social media strategy. Wahoo!
My new job involves all sorts of fun social media stuff, like blogging, Twitter, Facebook, etc. Sounds perfect for me, doesn’t it? I’ll actually be reaching out to influential bloggers to assist with spreading the NuVal message, so let me know if you want to help!
In a few weeks, I start part-time at NuVal and the rest of my time will be devoted to my blog, freelance writing, and a bunch of new projects.
Be sure to stay tuned! It’s just starting to get fun!

.

Tina, that is great and I am happy for you. I do hope that your blog won’t change though because I think you are a good example of normal eating without a rating system. As someone who is recovering from an eating disorder, weeding through the blogs to find the ones with the right balance is hard and you have that.
Good luck to you!
Hooray Tina! Congrats on finding a part time position that combines you interests. I can tell that you are going to be much happier working part time doing something fun and being able to devote the rest of your time to blogging/freelance projects.
Now if only I could do the same thing…
Congrats on finding a job that you are passionate about!

Congrats! It is always so hard to ask, but why not? The worst thing someone could say is no!
Yay! I think your new gig sounds awesome. I don’t know how “influential” I am, but I would be more than happy to help you spread the NuVal message. I thought it was pretty neat when I first read about it on your blog a while back. Have a great day!
Congrats Tina!! The job sounds like a perfect fit!
that’s awesome Tina! It sounds like such a great fit and it fits in your part time job idea – I think it will be so exciting! And good for you for ASKING – you’re right. The worst thing is they will say no.

That sounds amazing! What a great opportunity. Your persistence clearly paid off! I am not a “big time” blogger, but I am happy to help in any way!
)
WOW WOW WOW – good for you Tina!!! It’s so true – if you want something, you’ve got to ASK for it. Unfortunately, freebies aren’t handed out very often in this lifetime, so it’s always important to GO AFTER it!
What a blessing! I am a total believer in keeping on to get what you want! I would love to help spread the word, I think the NuVal system is great–it gets to the point of food that is healthy and food that is not so much.
CONGRATS!

I actually contacted my local grocery store (which is a chain) and insisted they implement the NuVal system after reading about it on your blog. They called me and asked for more information. I think they’re going to do it!
Congratulations!

Tina, I saw this and had to send it to you! http://www.bhg.com/holidays/halloween/pumpkin-carving/pumpkin-carving-stencils-of-favorite-dogs/?page=23
Awesome awesome, good for you for being persistent. Congrats Tina!!!
@Kristin @ Iowa Girl Eats: Those are AWESOME!
Good for you! I was actually at a conference earlier this week (LEAD Marketing Conference here in Chicago) and NuVal was one of the presenters!
I work for Corona beer, so we go to these retailer conferences to see what’s new and important in that industry, and giving more information to consumers (using technologies like NuVal) is a top priority for retailers these days. I think that company is sure to only grow from here!
