The Best Roasted Broccoli Recipe
Living with our friends has been a serious vacation! All of our “family dinners” seem like an true occasion– complete with cocktails! It’s been really tough for me to turn down delicious bottles of wine.
Tonight, we enjoyed a wonderful bottle of Veramonte Sauvignon Blanc. I remember this wine from a dinner at Piattini Wine Cafe many months ago. It’s excellent! Light and fruity with a crisp finish!

With dinner, we enjoyed the best Roasted Broccoli recipe, which my sister-in-law first made for Mal and me when we visited her in Seattle last June. I still can’t believe it has taken us this long to make it ourselves!
Ingredients:
- 2 large heads of broccoli
- 1/8 cup sugar
- 2 tbsp olive oil
Directions:
- Cut broccoli into florets
- Toss florets in olive oil and sugar
- Cover baking sheet with non-stick cooking spray or tin foil
- Spread broccoli florets on baking sheet
- Broil for 5-7 minutes until edges of florets turn brown and crispy

With the Roasted Broccoli, Mal made Sesame Soy Chicken with couscous and brown rice mixed together on the side.

The Roasted Broccoli was a huge hit! It was crunchy and slightly sweet. Everyone LOVED it!

For dessert, I enjoyed an Oatmeal Raisin Bar, which Marie and I baked last night. Mmmmm!

Check out Murphy making the moves on Bella! He’s such a stud-muffin!
I cant’ believe it’s back to work tomorrow! After all of the work I did today, I’m relaxing for the rest of the night!
Good night, bloggies!

That recipe is so different. How do the broccoli end up tasting? Are they very sweet or is it just a hint of sweetness? I’m curious- never tried anything like it!
Lizzy — September 7, 2009 @ 8:11 pm
roasted broccoli sounds amazing. Just as curious as Kat, does that leave the broccoli real sweet or is it mellow out because of the EVOO that you use? sounds awesome

We do a similar variation but use a microplane and grate some really good parmasean and a tiny bit of lemon zest over the top right when it comes out of the oven- a great way to add some flavor for not too many calories.

His little paw over her is just too much. The broccoli recipe sounds delicious I will definitely be trying that soon since broccoli is everywhere at the Farmer’s Market. I wonder if you could use a different type of sweetener and achieve the same result. Maybe I’ll do some experimenting!

Murphy and Bella are spooning!

Sweet broccoli? Yes please
Two of my other, more rare things, to put some sugar on are tomatoes and rice with milk.

Cara — September 7, 2009 @ 10:23 pm
Another surprising roasting tip: halved cherry tomatoes with a little bit of brown sugar and EVOO…outcome is to die for!

Ha haha!!! Those dogs are ridiculous! The roasted broccoli sounds very good. I’ve always counted broc as my favorite veggie and have never roasted it! I have a head in the fridge though so it may be time…

I love roasted broccoli…and I’ve got another tip for you: try roasted cauliflower! It’s made the same way (but I don’t use sugar), you can also add some parmesan cheese. It’s delicious too!

Are your friend’s pyrex bowls an old hand me down or did she recently buy them?
RickyRae — September 8, 2009 @ 6:37 am
I’ve never tried to broil broccoli before. I’ve always steamed it. Roasted broccoli sounds delicious! I am definitely going to give it a try. I agree with Julia, Parmesan cheese sounds like a delicious topper!
Pam (Highway to Health) — September 8, 2009 @ 6:49 am
That is such a cute picture of Murphy and Bella!!
The broccoli looks delicious! I love roasted broccoli anyway I bet the sugar makes it even better.
Kirsten — September 8, 2009 @ 6:50 am
I love wine with dinner too – even on non-occasions! I justify it by reminding myself it’s common practice in a lot of countries
Tina — September 8, 2009 @ 6:56 am
@Hangry Pants: They’re old school!
April — September 8, 2009 @ 7:32 am
I was just on google last night trying to find a roasted broccoli recipe. I’ll be trying this one tonight!
Katy — September 8, 2009 @ 12:31 pm
That looks good … but my husband makes a version that I think is even better. He takes a teeny bit of coconut oil and roasts or grills the veggies with some roasted garlic, lemon juice and a sprinkle of parmesan cheese. To die for!
Kate — September 8, 2009 @ 12:35 pm
Mmmm, I love roasted broccoli. I’ve never tried it with sugar, though! Probably caramelizes and gets all sweet. Good idea! Nice with the glazed salmon too.
Stephanie — September 8, 2009 @ 1:42 pm
I love that Veramonte Sauv Blanc. Almost as good as Kim Crawford and WAY cheaper.
Katie — September 8, 2009 @ 3:55 pm
We serve that wine at my restaurant! Nom.

Broccoli is a good green veggie

Broccoli is a good veggie and a good source of calcium. I eat all kinds of veggies. 2yrs ago my broccoli got as big as 2 grown men fists together and it sure tasted good and melted in my mouth.
