Sonic on the Brain

September 5, 2009

If you’re from New England, you’ve probably heard the buzz surrounding the opening of the first Sonic in the area. Supposedly, there was a 6-mile back-up of traffic on the day it opened! People were waiting hours to get their Sonic!

To be honest, I don’t understand why people are so excited, but I’m willing to try anything once. Mal and our friends are psyched to visit Sonic for lunch today, so I will be partaking in the Sonic action too. I don’t want to be a party pooper! What would you order off the menu?

Because of our planned Sonic lunch date, I kept breakfast light this morning. I ate an egg and cheese on an Arnold Sandwich Thin.

We’re out of homemade iced coffee, so we’re heading to Starbucks. I’m bringing my travel mug for an iced coffee with soy milk. :-D

Morning Tina!

I did the ‘what would you order’ the other day when I had a lunch at a fun restaurant. It is so fun to hear what people would order. :)

Wwen the Sonic opened up in Minnesota, they had police trafficing the area for WEEKS. No joke. I don’t get it either.

However, when I’m ‘home’ in Texas, Sonic is everywhere. Their drinks are fabulous, I stop by just to get the ‘Lo-Cal Diet Cherry Limeade’. And there is something about their ice, in that it NEVER MELTS. It is crazy.

For food, I’ve never eaten there myself, only had a few bites of things. The grilled chicken sammie looks good, but if you are really wanting to go all out, I’ve heard the Frito’s Chili Cheese Wrap is great. Have fun!

I’m from Texas as well and there is a Sonic like every five miles. I’m not understanding the big deal???? I haven’t eaten there in years but I use to love to get the cherry limeade and cherry coke. I use to eat the burgers they are alright.

Whatever you get to eat…be sure to get a strawberry or cranberry limeade to drink. They are fantastic! The way Sonic chops their ice is worth the trip alone! :) Enjoy!

Best ice ever. No lie. The drinks are amazing. I like the breakfast burritos (available all day) and their chicken wrap is tastey too (but nothing out of the ordinary, imho) the drinks are seriously where its at though!!

When they opened the first Minnesota Sonic last summer thry had to have police control traffic and its was that busy ALL week, so good luck partaking in the crazy action of Sonic. I don’t even know what a menu looks like there, so I’m excited to see what you get!

I don’t know why but I am obsessed with the idea of sonic too! I went once in sc… So different than places up here haha

We have Sonic here, and we don’t really venture there too often, But the one thing I really like to get on their menu is the mini banana split. It’s the perfect eensey-beensey sweet tooth satisfier. But they also have some moderately healthy things on the menu, like their grilled chicken sandwich and some of the salads. I also have to second the diet cherry limeade. Hope you enjoy your trip :) Love how you don’t let any food rules come between you and having a great time with family/friends. You are an awesome healthy role model, and I appreciate it!

Mal sounds just like my boyfriend when Sonic first opened out here. I think it’s just the awe of all the food that they advertise on TV. They are all right, but have to say they have a good grilled chicken sammie, comes on a wheat bun too.

Well, if you have a Sonic every 5 miles, of course you don’t get it. Just like I don’t get why people are so in love with IN & Out burger (seriously tho, the fries there are blegh and wobbly and flavorless, and the burgers ain’t all that). It’s the novelty factor. My southern cousins used to take me to Sonic when I was a kid, and the drive-in style restaurant with the carhops was such a novelty. Plus, the drinks and food was so different that the fast-food I grew up with that it became tradition to go straight to Sonic every time I went for a visit (they were baffled too).

As I grew older and I realized seeing my feet and being able to fasten my seatbelt was more important than chicken fingers and raspberry lime sodas, I stopped visiting. But every time I watch a station like TBS or TNT that runs Sonic commercials, I get a little thrill. Now that I live in the Northeast, I finally have access to one??? Hmmm. Maybe a day or so without seeing my feet probably won’t hurt me.

We have a Sonic about 20 minutes from our house but the first time I went to one was a few years ago. I was all excited but then saw the menu and thought, is there anything even slightly healthy here? I think I got a chicken sandwich, but now, if we ever end up going there, I get just a diet cherry limeade, it’s really good!

We have a Sonic just down the street and never go. I find their food pretty greasy. I do love their drinks though! Limeades are the way to go.

Reply

Jessica September 5, 2009 at 8:38 am

My favorite drink is the Lemon-Berry slush, but like others have said, the limeades are also pretttty great :)
I don’t know much about the food….I just stop in if I happen to be passing Sonic at happy hour (2-4 pm, half-off drinks!)

I’ve been to Sonic once. It was pretty cool but I don’t think I need to go there again.

See this is why I need to move to Boston! There are so many fun things to do!!

Eh – it’s good – probably not “wait in a 6 mile line” good, but decent. They have fresh, no sugar-added smoothies that I’ve had before. At any rate – enjoy your Saturday!

There was a Sonic that just opened by me this past summer and the line for it was INSANE! It was backed up to the main road, they had to get an over flow parking lot, the whole nine yards. Hope you have a great Saturday :)

lesley September 5, 2009 at 9:14 am

There’s Sonics all over here in the midwest (probably literally 5 of them in my town alone) and I really don’t think they’re that great. I suppose the best thing is their diet cherry limeade as everyone else has said. As far as the food, in my opinion it’s overpriced fast food that just doesn’t taste too great. But I agree, it’s worth seeing for yourself what all the fuss is about : )

Kim September 5, 2009 at 9:17 am

Same thing happened when they opened a Sonic here in Ohio. :) I haven’t eaten there as there isn’t much gluten-free, but they do have a grilled chix sandwich that should be somewhat healthy.

Have a great weekend!

Two words…..Banana Milkshake. Has real chunks of banana in it.

For a healthy choice, try the grilled chicken wrap. If you want to really splurge, you have got to try a peanut butter milkshake. It is worth every single calorie!

Here’s the deal with Sonic: It’s ALL about the drinks!!! This means order as healthy a lunch as possible- like a grilled chicken sand (although imho the food is superfluous and not even necessary) and order yourself a Small of WHATEVER indulgent drink looks fabulous (umm…diet limeade? I’ll pass on the artificial-tasting drink and the artificial-sweetners!) The banana malt is absolute bliss as are the real fruit slushes- remember the whole point of sonic is you can mix and create your own flavors. I’m partial to a cherry-lime fruit slush (with real lime and maraschino cherries…I’m drooling) although my best friend loves the Strawberry. So basically my advice is to keep the meal light and DON’T skimp on the drinks or you might as well just not go to Sonic.

Sonic just opened her in NJ also. I think all the hype is that they have been advertising here for years yet there wasn’t any in the state! They really have an effective marketing campaign tho! I love how they have the nutritionals on their website. I respect any company that does that these days. Their salads and grilled chicken options are definitely safe.

Cara September 5, 2009 at 9:48 am

I never got the whole Sonic craze either! I’ve only had a “cherry limeade” there, and it pretty much tasted like Slurpee syrup and crushed ice…

Can’t top Burgerville! (A northwest gem, the only decent fast food out there!)

I went to Sonic in Tennessee I got an ice cream mixer. It was good but I wouldn’t wait 6 miles for it!!

I’ve been to sonic once. I thought it was kinda gross. I mean, it’s cool that it is a drive in and they have tater tots, but it’s still weird fast food.

Never heard of Sonic and didn’t know they were coming. Now that I know, I curse you for introducing me to the Frito’s Chile Cheese Wrap!

I think that’s hilarious that everyone is so anxious for Sonic to arrive… We’ve ha Sonic where I’m from forever, and when i was little I loved it for the big hamburgers and cheese fries. Looking back, it prob wasn’t all that great to be honest, but the whole sitting in your car and having it delivered to your window makes it all taste even better. :)

Heather September 5, 2009 at 10:10 am

I have been to Sonic a few times and really have no idea what the big deal is. When I lived in Georgia, it wasn’t a big deal – maybe because they are everywhere. The food isn’t bad but it certainly isn’t worth waiting in a 6 mile line for!

Elizabeth (The Dallas Celiac) September 5, 2009 at 10:10 am

We have Sonics everywhere down here in Texas. When I used to be able to eat there, I would get a #2 burger with tator tots (you HAVE to get the tots instead of the fries). They have good shakes too.

foodcents September 5, 2009 at 10:13 am

I didn’t realize they were sparse in the NW. I think it is one of those things that is fun to try once, but I can not imagine it being a staple in ones diet. I will admit, that when we would go abuse our livers on the weekends, nothing tasted better than a meal from Sonic.

Have a good Saturday:)

Hmmm I’ve never been here either – the 1 in our area is like 30 min away on the “southside” ha where we don’t venture often! I would get the grilled chicken wrap and cheese tots :)

I like their Grilled Chicken Salads and the Grilled Chicken Wrap. Also I like their chili cheese tots ;)

We have Sonics all over the place out here! The Chicken Club Toaster is very tasty…but be warned, it’s definately not health food. The limeades are good too!

I’m a big fan of Sonic but only for their drinks and ice cream. The food is just so-so in my mind. I go to Happy Hour at least once a week for half price drinks!

Tina,

As a former New England native I’m HORRIFIED to see that people waited that long for Sonic! We have a million of them here in Florida and while they’re unique enough to deserve one visit, I don’t get the big appeal.

Hope you enjoyed, though! And thanks for posting all the Murphy pics — he makes my day!

Finally there is a reason for Sonic to air commercials in MA!! Have fun, I hope you don’t have to wait long!
I’m still trying to decide weather or not to go to the Phantom food fest…

Reply

MelissaNibbles September 5, 2009 at 10:44 am

I think it was a genius marketing plan to air commercials in MA for two years before opening the store. It made people curious and increased the hype. I went to college near a Sonic and found it to be typical fast food, but greasier. They have cool drinks though.

when we first got a sonic where i used to live it was a HUGE deal so I was expecting something earth shatteringly good… don’t built it up too much :-)
but the drinks are yummy!

I had no idea Sonic wasn’t everywhere! I live in Texas and they’re all around. I’m a vegetarian so I don’t eat a lot of the meals but they have tator tots (!!!) and awesome drinks. I always get diet cherry limeade. The desserts are good too. Have a good day!

Reply

Courtney September 5, 2009 at 11:18 am

My hubby and I always wondered why they played Sonic commercials in the Chicago market when there are only a few here! One opened near us recently, but we haven’t gone. It does seem to have cheap food…but god knows that isn’t a good sign necessarily!!!!
Mmmmm tater tots just might make it all worth while though….

a sonic just opened in north jersey a few months ago and my dad has been trying to get in every single day since! it’s still so crowded, it’s insane! i’ve been to a sonic once and i’ll admit that the food isn’t very good. but the drinks are amazinggggg. diet cherry limeade is a must!

Hey Tina, Im from Texas where Sonic is huge. The food is standard fast food fare, but people really rave about their drinks. Id go the drink route.

We have tons of Sonics here and I hate them =( The food tastes pretty nasty and the ice-cream is pretty subpar — I’ve only had the sodas and they water them down quite a bit, but I’ve heard the flavored drinks are supposed to be good. Hope that you end up loving it!

I grew up with Sonic, and I always make a stop when I’m in a town that has one. It may be a good thing that there isn’t one close by! I think that the chili cheese dog with onions and mustard added is probably my favorite food on the menu, but I have to agree that the one thing you really should try is the cherry limeade. They are SO good. I actually love the strawberry limeades more, but the cherry is the standard.

Deva (Voracious Vorilee) September 5, 2009 at 11:52 am

We like to go to Sonic occasionally for sundae’s. A friend and I used to go after workouts for diet cherry limeades. I LOVE their ice, it’s like little bitty bits of ice all crammed into one ice cube!

Sonic Blasts are worth an indulgence…dangerously good! I don’t get anything else there but the drinks! Sonics are a dime a dozen here!

Hahahahh I know what u mean in Hawaii we have no sonic! So when I go to Ashland I was like I MUST GO TO SONIC!
Their food is pretty good but watch the drinks the calories are very crazy. I went to Sonic for the last time yesterday before going back to Hawaii
