Pump & Sip

September 11, 2009

No couch and DVR for me tonight! I’ve actually had quite an eventful evening!

After work, I met Ali at Healthworks for the Body Pump launch at the Cambridge club. I’ve been waiting months for this day! I LOVE Body Pump, and I can’t even explain how I excited I was for it! Ali must have thought I was nuts!

Healthworks made the Body Pump launch quite an event– complete with decorations, snacks, and raffles.

My Body Pump set-up included a barbell, plates, clips, and a “bench.”

The class kicked my butt! My legs and arms felt like jello by the end. I actually struggled to wash my hair in the shower! It was awesome!!! I can’t wait to go again!

After a speed-shower at Healthworks, I met my friend, Beth, for a wine event at Gordon’s Fine Wine & Culinary Center in Waltham.

Winemaker, Simon Back of South Africa, hosted the tasting at Gordon’s tonight. Simon Back comes from a unique family history for South Africa, dating back to the early 1900′s with his great grandfather emigrating from Lithuania as a refugee to Cape Town. Soon after, he bought a farm and planted a vineyard, now known as Backsberg Estate Cellars.

The Backsberg wine brand is launching in Massachusetts, so our group was among the first in Boston to taste the wines, which I thought was pretty cool! ;-)

The featured wines:

  • 2008 Backsberg Sauvignon Blanc
  • 2007 Backsberg Chenin Blanc
  • 2008 Chardonnay (Kosher)
  • 2007 Pinotage (Kosher)
  • 2007 Pinotage
  • 2006 PumpHouse Shiraz
  • 2003 Babylons Toren Red

IMG_7123.JPG

My favorite wine of the evening was the 2003 Babylons Toren Red, which was a blend of Merlot, Cabernet, and Shiraz. It was smooth and bright with red fruit flavors. Yum! It was a perfect wine for autumn! :-D

I was starving after Body Pump, so I basically devoured my plate of bread and cheese! It was delicious paired with the wines, but I definitely wolfed it down!

I’m exhausted! And I need to rest-up for my sister’s bachelorette party tomorrow.

Good night, blog friends!

i was at HW cambridge right after bodypump ended i think. all the food was still out. i was doing crunches right next to the table of cheese and brownies. it feels weird to have food in the gym! i didn’t eat any.. couldn’t rationalize it

Bodysculpt looks fantastic, kind of like my gym’s bodyshape but definitely kicked up a notch! The wine tasting looked beautiful… glad you enjoyed… chenin blanc is one of my new favoritest lately! :)

I LOVE body pump!! It’s such a brilliant work out isn’t it? That’s the only way I really do strength training at the moment but I love it so I’m okay with that…
Um, cheese and bread is always wolfed by me! Cheese, bread and wine = heaven!

I wish we had a gym with classes around here…the local Y has step and spin and that’s it. My friend who lives in Rochester takes Body Pump and loves it. When we move I hope my next gym has it :-)

I love body pump! And I definitely know the jello leg feeling you mentioned. I should really get back to going more often as it’s a great workout. Although, my classes don’t come equipped with the snacks. =/

Hell yes!!! I go to Body Pump as much as possible when I am back home in Sun Valley Idaho. I’m stoked to hear it’s made it’s way to Boston!

I need to start doing more weight training. Thanks for the inspiration!

Kudos for weight training!

I tried a Body Pump class once and it was a KILLER! I almost walked out but my pride kept me in the room. The bad part is that I haven’t gone back since! I really should; I know I need to do more weight training! I’m a cardio queen!

And the best way to refuel after a tough workout is definitely wine and cheese! :-)

I ADORE body pump! The posters we have at our gym are definitely different than yours! Do they have all the other fun Body-_____________classes Like Body Combat? Such a great concept!! Enjoy!

Re. the wine- I’m not a huge Pinotage fan. It’s just a bit weird for me. Did you like it?

A workout and a wine tasting?? Heaven!! You are a lucky girl. We don’t have any of those name brand classes here in KS. Hope your muscles solidify before tomorrow night!

Body Pump is fantastic! You see results so quickly too! I don’t belong to a gym now so I haven’t done it for ages – I miss it!

So funny-I went to Body Pump yesterday morning for the first time. I LOVED It too! Erica raves about Les Mills classes and now I know why. They are awesome! I tried Body Combat too, great workout too. I am sore today though, those squats were a killer:) Have a great Saturday!

Body Pump seems fun! But being a guy, I have to wonder if I’ll ever do it. Those classes have so many women in them, I’d feel so weird in there. I’ll stick to running. :)

You can’t beat a little post-workout wine!

Stephanie (Surviving Chicago) September 12, 2009 at 9:59 am

Hey Tina, if your gym offers Body Combat you should give that a go, too – especially since you aren’t running right now. It seems most people don’t love it after the first class but give it another try and then they are addicted! I love it, but moved to Chicago, where Body Combat doesn’t exist and gyms are expensive…

I’ve never tried Body Pump. It looks like a class that I’d love tho! I love weights. Is it all weights or is cardio incorporated?

Reply

Lizzy September 12, 2009 at 11:35 am

i’ve never been to a body pump class, and it sounds pretty intense! you know you’ve had a good workout when you have trouble washing your hair! :) good job Tina!!!!!

Wine tastings are so much fun. I need to google some in my area, you always seem to have so much fun! :)

I loved the body pump class!!! The music was great and I love getting women excited about weight training! It’s such an important component to a workout that often gets overlooked. I think some women are intimidated by it, but I truly believe most women are so much stronger than they give themselves credit for! This class was great! It was so much fun and made me feel strong and like I could conquer anything! Looking forward to hearing about your bachelorette party!

Not only does body pump sound awesome, but I love the poster about “pressure makes diamonds”. So cute yet inspirational at the same time!

Ok you are officially the only person I have ever seen/heard of to get this excited about BodyPump. I mean, I like pump as much as the next person… but I wouldn’t say that I love it.

What a great idea – workout with wine :-)

Your mention of Simon Back caught my eye – what a great wine-making family!

Backsberg is legendary among our wine farms here in Cape town South Africa, and especially for their reds. We have indulged in them since our first few bottles as poor university students, and still rate them.

I hope they make a hit in Boston :-)
