Jeez, just because a dog is in a crate, that doesn’t mean it’s in a pet store. I crate my dog every day, people.

It’s not hard to tell this is a pet store ;) Look, I’m not actually saying it’s immoral to get a dog from a pet store. I *am* saying that with a breed like the Pug, which probably have more hereditary health problems than any other, one HAS to do one’s research. Unless you’re prepared to deal with possible tremendous health problems in exchange for helping a dog in need from a rescue, you’re shooting yourself in the foot getting a Pug from a pet store. Almost guaranteed they will not be healthy in the long run. I know Tina has been thinking about this and wanting a Pug for a long time, and I have faith that she’d be careful in her decision. But seriously, it’s not being preachy. It’s concern. This article from The Onion is funny, but it also rings true. You need to be very careful when selecting a source for your Pug.

@daph: It’s NOT a pet store. Why make assumptions?

I can see why the assumption was made that the video was shot in a pet store. I agree we shouldn’t assume, though, but I can see how that leap was made. Thank you to those who tried to get across an important point, in any case. A kind of similar issue came up on another blog recently and immediately everyone got defensive (on both “sides”) instead of it being an opportunity to educate and shed light on some thing issues that MANY people just aren’t aware of, in regards to dog breeding and welfare.

There are so many people out there, good, intelligent, well-meaning people, who aren’t even aware of the issues surrounding puppy mills, pet stores, irresponsible breeding and what goes into being a good breeder. (that’s not even touching on the rescue aspect) It would be nice for people to get engaged in some dialogue that will maybe make an impact on someone out there reading, or spur someone on to learn more about it. It doesn’t have to turn into an argument.

All that said, I trust you, Tina, will make a great decision on where to get your puppy from and I can’t wait to “meet” him or her. If Murphy is your new puppy already, he’s adorable!

@61: If someone has already posted a picture of a dog they probably already own, it’s more like pissing on the parade, frankly. It’s rude. There’s a time and a place–like, I don’t know, any of the other thousands of times Tina has talked about her love for pugs.

@PS: She already said the dog is not from a pet store, so what’s the point of preaching?

Well, #62 and #63 obviously missed my point. More likely I didn’t explain it very well, but I can see that it’s not something that needs to be discussed in this context, anyway.
