Odd Food Combos

August 27, 2009

Ok, so I didn’t eat any “odd” food combos for lunch today– I just thought it would be a fun topic for my lunch post! :-D But, I do have some favorite odd combinations– many of which seem to include buffalo sauce! ;-) What are your favorite “odd” food combinations?

Today’s lunch started with an arugula salad with tomatoes and olive oil. The arugula was from the Farmers’ Market at Harvard and it was AMAZING! Wow!

To be completely honest, I didn’t know arugula tasted so wonderful! It was full of flavor– mildly peppery, sort of tangy, and even a little spicy. I never knew! The arugula that I buy at the grocery store tastes nothing like the stuff I ate for lunch today! I’m still pleasantly surprised! :-D

IMG_6089Lunch also included peach-flavored Better Whey yogurt and granola, which is one of my favorite “normal” food combinations.

For an afternoon snack, I brought a Pure Bar to munch on later.

A Floating Wine Extravaganza

Gordon’s Fine Wines & Liquors is taking wine tasting to a whole new level… on a boat! So cool! :-D

On Thursday, September 10th at 6:30 pm, VinoVoyage (aboard the Spirit of Boston) will set sail into Boston Harbor, carrying about 400 passengers with about 300 wines. The evening will also feature a full buffet dinner, DJ, live jazz, and a VIP section. Check out the Gordon’s website and VinoVoyage flyer for more info.

I still can’t believe I am going to this event! I am PSYCHED!

Hmm… food combos. For me, it’s pretty much anything with peanut butter! Peaches and nut butter have been a combo I’ve been eating recently since the summer produce is in full swing. Also, peanut butter in tomato sauce is weirdly delicious.

That VinoVoyage sounds AMAZING! Alas, too pricey for me right now. Enjoy it, though. Can’t wait for the recap.

I like to put either ketchup or soy sauce on everything but lately I’ve been obsessed cheese and fruit. Instead of a little sugar a sprinkle a little feta or goat cheese over a bowl of strawberries.

I love pumpkin bread with peanut butter, which isn’t weird in food blog land, but in normal life people thing it is.

And turnips with gravy (instead of potatoes) at thanksgiving. Love.

Thanks for posting those links! I don’t know if I’m into any weird food combos but I do like sweet-salty or sweet-spicy (notice a pattern) things like chocolate with chilies.

I seriously need to move out of MN to somewhere that has as many cool events as Boston. Can’t wait to hear about it.

Odd food combos…can’t think of any off the top of my head, but I could dip just about anything in ketchup and smear just about anything with nut butter.

Also, to a lot of my friends, my generally healthy eating lifestyle is one big ‘odd food combo’ :)

Mmm, I just had that Cranberry-Orange Pure Bar (from the Healthy Living Summit goodie bag) at lunch yesterday, and it was much better than I expected. In fact, I think I’m going to go buy some more. Hooray for a successful marketing strategy!

I’m going to have to pick up some arugula if I see it at a Farmer’s Market! I usually avoid it at the grocery store because it never looks too great ;-)

Ooh, I’m jealous of your wine voyage. Hope you have a great time!

I’m pretty normal when it comes to food combinations…but I DO love to throw salad on top of my cheese pizza. It’s DELICIOUS!

I’m jealous of that PURE bar! I’m so curious to try one!

My latest condiment craze has been TJ’s curry simmer sauce with hummus. I just throw about a .5 Tbsp of each over my salad or veggies, shake, and munch! The hummus mixed with the herbs makes it taste like a cream-based salad dressing!

Heather August 27, 2009 at 1:49 pm

My latest food combo was a mango almond butter sandwich. Not the most out of the box, but new to me and truely delicious!

broccoli and ketchup!

You are definitely in the know of some great events!
I don’t have many crazy food combos. Every once in awhile I go on this kick where I want hot sauce on everything. But that comes and goes and I never get too crazy!

I don’t think my food combos are weird because I eat a lot of the foods other food bloggers do. However, in the “real world” I get some strange looks when I put peanut butter on oatmeal or hummus in a salad. The real worlders don’t know what they’re missing!

Booze cruise! I’m jealous!

Nicole August 27, 2009 at 1:57 pm

My weirdest food combo would be ham on raisin toast with peanut butter. I think it’s the sweet/salty combo that gets me. Whenever I eat it, people freak out! But they should just try it because I think they be surprised!

Thank you for posting that Ted Kennedy quote – it was a great choice!

I love crazy salads! I’ll put anything in a salad. My favorite thing to do is combine last night’s pasta salad with lettuce and some veggies and call it today’s lunch :) Interesting food combos are a great way to mask boring old leftovers.

I eat cottage cheese sometimes with hummus or salsa- my friends get super grossed out , luckily blogging has intro’d me to a whole new level of “normal” so I don’t even sweat it :D

I think the weirdest combination I indulge in is the green monster with spinach and bananas. I get weird looks in real life when I tell folks that I drink on almost every day. But it’s sooooo good.

Good-bye Mr Kennedy. You were a good man.

I for some reason have never been a fan of arugula i think cause of the peppery taste. me and spice dont get along, but that yogurt sure looks amazing! :)

Reply

Eve August 27, 2009 at 2:17 pm

Fresh arugula is really so delicious!! It’s very different than some of the packaged stuff that has lost its flavor.

Cynthia (it all changes) August 27, 2009 at 2:22 pm

I put hummus on almost everything including my scrambled eggs.

Hot sauce is great on just about everything, isn’t it?

A weird combo for me is balsamic vinegar dressing with watermelon. I had never tried this until I went to a restaurant in St. Louis, and they served little watermelon cubes with a little scoop full of balsamic on one side. The taste combination is incredible!

Nice touch with the Ted Kennedy quote. Whether we are Republican or Democrat does not matter, he will be missed by many.
Food combos…The only thing I do that might be odd is I like mustard and hummus on everything! Very picky about my mustard too. Has to be either Nancy’s Sharp & Creamy or Stonewall Kitchen. So good.

Julie August 27, 2009 at 2:46 pm

I don’t think any of my food combos are odd! But I will say this – I could put ketchup, salsa, or peanut butter on anything. Not together, obvi!

How are these Pure Bars? I LOVE the larabars but can’t get them here in Europe. So I ordered them online (already waiting for 2 weeks…) and ordered some Pure Bars with them as well. Cause I remember you blogged about those… Which flavors can you recommend? (I think I ordered cherry, apple, chocolate brownie and chocolate trail mix) Good choice? Thanks! xxx Julia

Becca August 27, 2009 at 4:10 pm

I don’t think I have that many weird combos… but I did have the most amazing Apple Cheddar Omelet the other day. All my companions gave me weird looks, but the sweet/salty combo was simply to die for!

I like dill pickle slices with Jif peanut butter, and salt on watermelon – yum!

Sarah August 27, 2009 at 4:25 pm

I can’t think of many weird combos, but I do love buffalo sauce – great on mac-n-cheese, to dip your grilled cheese into, mixed w/some Greek yogurt w/a touch of LF bleu cheese dressing and used as a veggie dip . . . . making myself hungry for an afternoon snack now!

I like to eat Trader Joe’s Sea Salt Pita Chips, or Stacey’s Plain Pita chips, crushed up in to crumbs with ketchup and a diet coke. I also like to eat turkey spaghetti sauce with mushrooms, and whole-wheat bread instead of pasta :)

Evan Thomas August 27, 2009 at 5:24 pm

Peanut butter on tuna sandwiches–it’s like a double whammy of childhood favorites and is pretty amazing. I used PB&Co.’s The Heat Is On peanut butter which has pepper and cihle in it so you also get some heat

Kaytee August 27, 2009 at 6:16 pm

I really like corn chips with peanut butter. It sounds awful, I know. I tried it on accident and I may “accidentally” eat again sometimes alone.

Reply

angieinatlanta August 27, 2009 at 6:48 pm

Yum! I guess that proves that fresh veggies always taste better!

I put salty peanuts…in my Diet Coke…and drink it and then eat the peanuts…

Cottage cheese mixed with peanut butter. I swear it’s good, especially if you add some oats.
