Back to Reality

August 17, 2009

What a weekend! I still can’t believe that the Healthy Living Summit is really over. I absolutely loved living in healthy living-vacation land for a few days. And I loved being able to devote that much time and energy to health, wellness, and friends in such a fun and positive environment.

*Sigh* Back to reality.

Breakfast

Not surprisingly, I slept through my alarm this morning. I missed my morning workout, but my body definitely needed the rest. I was exhausted! I have a workout planned for later tonight– probably some lower body strength training, which I’ve blown off for over a week now! I’m really trying to make exercise a priority in my life, like Bob Greene suggested, so it’s on the top of my list for tonight.

I was in a little bit of a rush this morning, so I toasted a cinnamon raisin bagel and topped it with Barney Butter and banana slices. Fast and simple.

After listening to Jenna rave about Amazing Grass this past weekend, I knew that I should give it another try. For breakfast, I also mixed up an Amazing Grass-chocolate-coffee drink to take on my commute.

IMG_5521

In the mix:

  • 1 packet Amazing Grass Kidz Super Food
  • 8 oz. vanilla soy milk
  • 8 oz. iced coffee

I “need” coffee in the morning to get me going, so my grass + chocolate + caffeine drink was the prefect morning combination for me. It definitely worked!

Lunch

Today’s lunch was all over the place because we have no food in our apartment. In a rush this morning, I came up with this lunch:

Edamame:

(A few edamame are missing from this photo because I dug-in before I snapped a pic.)

IMG_5526

Art’s Original Blend Pro Bar:

I loved all of the nuts in this flavor!

IMG_5524

And pineapple-flavored Chobani:

The combo of (random-ish) foods satisfied me quite well. It stinks that there wasn’t fresh fruit and veggies included in today’s lunch, but I plan to fix that with a produce-packed dinner.

Question of the Day

How do you make fitness a priority in your life?

I have never seen the pineapple flavor!!! How was it? Where did you get it?

Reply

Tina August 17, 2009 at 1:55 pm

@Ali: It was good! I actually like it better than some of their other flavors. The company sent me their new flavors to try.

Have never had edamame. Not sure how to cook or eat. Could you do a how to post some time?

Glad you had a fun weekend at the conference. I watched some of it online. I wish I could of been there. I get up early to exercise. It starts my day off right. I feel so much better when my workout is over and it helps me get energized for the day. I also like getting it done so nothing else gets in the way and so I can relax at nights with the hubs.

How was the pineapple flavor? That sounds yummy. I have a LOT of lunches/dinners that are random. Esp. since hubby doesn’t eat ‘healthy’ like me. It certainly makes shopping interesting :)

I would love to say that it is a priority, but I am still working on finding that work/life/exercise balance. I work so much and at odd hours, so when I’m not working I’m sleeping, and often justify missing my workout by sleeping a few hours.

I do know that when I work out first thing in the morning, I feel the best. I know that I will be more likely to skip my workout if i plan to go after work.

I try and make fitness a priority – I tell myself I can do at least 30 minutes of activity a day and I normally stick to it (and exceed 30 min!).

Yummy edamame ;)

Back to reality is right. Don’t feel bad, I slept in this morning as well. All that walking wore me out!

I really try to schedule my fitness in just like anything else in my life. I tell myself that it is a priority plus it gives me energy to tackle everything I have to do in my day. The one sure fire way I get it done is getting up early before work! It was hard at first to do but I have become used to it now and usually wake before my alarm goes off.

Mmmmmm…Chobani yogurt!

Those probars are good!! Where do you find them?

Hey Tina! It has been really rough coming back to the real world after such a great weekend. Thanks again! :)

I very recently realized that the best way to make exercise and fitness a priority is to squeeze it in when you can. I have recently fallen in love with exercise tv on demand and its so easy to fit 10 minutes of pilates or 20 minutes of yoga into my morning routine. I used to feel like if it wasn’t a concentrated 40 minutes of cardio and then 20 minutes of strength than it didn’t count. Definitely not the case! :)

Pineapple Chobani! Where did you find that? How is it? It sounds good!
I hope your day is wonderful, Tina! Looks like a good day so far :)

I just consider my workout as part of my day, part of who I am. I’ve never been one to workout in the AM but I really look forward to my evening runs/workouts. I think it’s important to find the excercise and time of day that works best for you. If I start to feel lazy I just think of the happy I feeling I get out there on the road. And the amazing feeling I get when I’m done. The minute I walk out my front door and hit the pavement I feel energized. Just thinking of that feeling is enough to make me suit up and go!

If I’m training for something, I force myself to fit it in because I know that my end performance will suffer if I don’t put in the time. It definitely is the carrot I need dangled in front of me!

Hey Tina! Your breakfast looks great!! I’ve always wondered, I know you occasionally eat those Hemp bagels, but what brand of bagels did you eat this morning? I’ve been on the search for the Hemp bagels, but I think I’ll try the Charles St. Whole Foods and see if they have them.
Your amazing meal, coffee mixture sounds awesome as well!!! I’ll have to try that!

OH I forgot, when it comes to working out I usual convince myself the night before and plan a workout to do the next morning. Morning workouts seem to work best for me, otherwise I get less and less motivated as the day goes on. Planning I think is key to keep up a good fitness mentality.

Back to reality is right! We had great weather this weekend and it’s really tough to be at work right now. I make exercise a priority by making MYSELF a priority. Bob is right in that it shouldn’t be something you fit in. You deserve a healthy life and body, so finding exercise you enjoy is important for your overall well-being.

Reply

Sammie August 17, 2009 at 2:30 pm

I fit in my exercise while my guys are still asleep in the morning. That is the only “me” time I get so I take advantage of it because if I don’t, I really missed my chance.

I tell myself: this is what I do!
I do it first thing so the responsibilities of the day don’t take precedence.

Usually I try to get up early and work out on days I know will be particularly long and hectic. Unfortunately that plan didn’t work today, and I slept through the alarm!

i just tried that kids grass one last week and loved it! I just wish it didn’t have soy protein in it.

I haven’t been such a great job of making exercise a priority lately either, but it’s mostly because of our trip and being sick after getting back. Back to it as soon as we can!

pineapple chobani?!? ugh, I wish I could get chobani here!

Reply

Paige@ RunningAroundNormal August 17, 2009 at 2:45 pm

Mmm pineapple flavored Chobani? I’ve never heard of that one. Sounds great!

I just see fitness like I do brushing my teeth. I just don’t really miss my workouts. I have one rest day planned per week. Every once in a while I’ll take two, but it’s always planned. I guess it’s just pat of forming a habbit.

I feel the same way–the Summit was such a health nut/foodie wonderland that facing reality this morning was a bit harsh!

Reply

Sandhiya August 17, 2009 at 2:48 pm

I try to get my ‘am workout’ (high impact) as much as possible. If I miss them..I try to fit in lunch time gym visit (high impact)..if that fails due to work schedule, a evening walk (low impact), if all fails..I love working out to any dance DVD’s (low – medium impact)late at night just before going to bed.

I see my workouts as part of my daily routine. I have one planned rest day a week and the other 6 days I make sure to get to the gym.

I LOVE working out in the morning because it really energizes me for the day. I usually go for a run or bike ride at 6 am and I leave time in my schedule for a leisurely breakfast and blog reading afterwards. Mornings are my favorite and I feel so accomplished by the time I sit down to breakfast! I find that it’s harder finding the motivation to go to work after that than it is to get out of bed for my workout!

i get up at 435am monday through friday and head to the gym that opens a bit before 5am…not much else to do at that time of day!

I tell others that I am working out. I find that if I say to The Boy “I am going to the gym for an hour tonight” that I go to the gym and spend an hour doing weights and HIIT or running or on an elliptical.

I make fitness a priority by putting it on my schedule. I’ve had back surgery and need the exercise (strength and cardio). I did slack for a while and ended up in pain so I know what happens and keep it on my schedule.

Leah August 17, 2009 at 4:01 pm

I try to remind myself that exercise 1) helps me to sleep better 2) controls my ridiculous appetite and 3) puts me in a better mood. I shoot for 30-60 minutes of cardio a day and 30-60 minutes of weight lifting a week, but some weeks are better/worse than others. I work out during my lunch break, which works perfectly for me and (luckily) for my office. Fitness classes (spinning and pilates) help out a lot, because I almost never skip out of them and I work harder when I’m yelled at by an instructor. :)

The hard part is that if I do miss a workout at lunch (meetings, etc.) or something else disrupts my routine, I find every excuse under the sun to NOT make it up. Hopefully running outside and walking to/from work will help when my life gets crazy in the Fall!

Lauren August 17, 2009 at 4:02 pm

I exercise first thing in the morning–at 5/5:30. I’ve been doing this for years, and it has become an essential part of my routine. I’ve also found exercise that doesn’t ‘feel’ like exercise to me–running, cycling, and yoga. Lifting weights the the gym, that feels like exercise to me, and as a result, I don’t enjoy it very much. (I know it’s good for me, but still!)

One good tip I’ve found is to fit in exercise when you can – I’m an exercise lover and I enjoy getting an hour of more of cardio a day. However, on days when I don’t have the time or that sounds too overwhelming, I’m temped to skip working out altogether but really it’s better to work out for 10 minutes than to not work out at all, so I’ll tell myself just to get a quick workout in and sometimes it ends up extending to longer, anyway!

Lizzy August 17, 2009 at 4:23 pm

Congrats again on such a successful weekend! :)

Making exercise a priority has been successful thus far for me because i’m training for the marathon in October here in Detroit. so that has really helped. i find that if i have something to work towards it really helps!!

Apparently I’m not the only one who picked up on the pineapple yogurt – I used to eat a different brand a few years back until they changed their formula. Why they messed with something so good, I’ll never understand…

Unless I’m really ill or busy, getting in my workout isn’t optional, it’s a priority. It helps to have a race on my schedule but even when I’m not actively training for a marathon or ultra, I remind myself that allowing my body to get out of shape will make it that much harder to build back up and race my best once there IS something on the calendar. I also have my weekly group long runs each Sunday – the group is full of amazing runners who are always training for something. Just knowing I have to keep up with them each Sunday gets me out of bed the rest of the week!

Amanda August 17, 2009 at 4:59 pm

Like a lot of people have already said, sometimes I have to shift my perception of “exercise” to fit it in. I love to get in a good session of strength/cardio, but sometimes a 30 min walk and some crunches/pushups just have to be good enough for the day! It’s really better than nothing!

Reply

Madison August 17, 2009 at 5:02 pm

I normally write all my appts in my day planner and then fill in my workout time around other important things going on. It helps if you plan your workout for the entire week so you know exactly what you are going to do each day. It makes working out easier if you already know what’s in store for the day. This also helps to make sure you are all your cardio and weight training in.

I know when I do work out I feel better overall, so that keeps me going. I am more productive at work, which makes me look better and grow more, so not only does working out help me stay in shape it also keeps me going at work. Even ifI just walk around the charles at lunch, I still feel better about my self all around.

Reply

Sarah August 17, 2009 at 5:19 pm

I schedule in exercise as an appt., just like all the other commitments. And I always do it in the a.m., b/c I know myself – in the p.m. there are a million things going on and I’m tired, so exercise wouldn’t happen. I used to go at 5 a.m. when I worked – every day w/o fail. Now that I’m home with a kid, I drop her at school and go at 9 a.m. every day. Nothing gets scheduled ’til 11 – after my shower. Other stuff does have to slide, or gets done at night (house things) but exercise is a big priority for me!

Oh, that pineapple Greek yogurt sounds delicious!!

I have started making it a point to do a yoga workout for up to an hour, at least 4-5 mornings a week. By getting it out of the way in the morning, I am more likely to do it every day. :-D

Loved following your Summit adventures, by the way!!
