Streamlining Your Weeknights

July 8, 2009

It’s girl’s night in!

Of course, I love my hubby more than anything (even pugs!), but I just love a night home alone to do whatever I want, eat whatever I want, and hog the TV. ;-)

I’m devoting much of my night to “beatify-ing” myself. :-D

I have a full beauty agenda for the evening:

  • Manicure
  • Pedicure
  • Facial
  • Teeth Whitening
  • Eyebrow-tweezing

I picked “Beach Party” for my pedicure color. I’m trying my hardest to stay positive about summer! 8-)

Ways to Streamline Your Weeknights

Over the past few months, I’ve received a number of comments and emails asking how I am able to accomplish and fit so much into my day. Let’s just say, it’s not easy! And, to be completely honest, I don’t sleep much! (Maybe I should make it a Monday Mini Goal for next week to sleep 7+ hours most nights?) I also never stop moving when I am at home. I’m always going from one task to the next– from dinner to blogging to cleaning to reading to bed. However, I’m not a machine. You have probably noticed that there are nights that I don’t blog at all. On those nights, I unwind and recharge.

With that said, here are some tips for getting more out of your weeknights:

  • Clean every night: Sounds impossible, right? What I mean is clean superficially. Every night, I take 10 minutes to pick up random stuff around the house, sort through mail, load/run the dishwasher, and wipe-down the counters in the kitchen and bathroom. I save the most time-consuming tasks for the weekend, like vacuuming, dusting, laundry, etc.
  • Exercise in the morning: Ok, so you might not be a morning person, but getting in my workout out before the day begins, gives me a couple of extra hours in the evening to get things done. Check out my tips for becoming a morning exerciser.
  • Make large dinners: I actually like eating leftovers, so I often make meals that will last more than one day, like homemade pizza, casseroles, and pasta dishes. I often pair these “heavier” meals with a light, veggie-packed salad. I love coming home to a dinner that only needs to be reheated.
  • Pack multiple lunches: I love eating homemade salads for lunch, so when I pack them at home, I make sure to pack more than one. It makes the week so much easier when I don’t have to think about making a lunch every day. My husband is really hardcore and packs 5 peanut butter and jelly sandwiches on Sunday nights for the entire work week.
  • Plan TV nights/record your favorite shows: I love my DVR! I record all of my favorite shows and plan a night each week to watch all of them– minus the commercials. ;-) I rarely watch TV otherwise.
  • Schedule “Beauty” Nights: I do all of my time-consuming beauty routines at the same time on one night, instead of individually, which saves time in the long run. See above for ideas! ;-)
  • Only do laundry on weeknights: I hate wasting my weekends doing laundry, so I’d much rather fit it in during the week. Living in an apartment building also makes doing laundry very time-consuming because I often have to wait for a washer or dryer. Doing my laundry during the week when there is less “traffic” in the laundry room speeds up the process.
  • Sunday Prep: Preparing for the week on Sunday nights also helps streamline my weeknights.

Dinner

I made sure to load-up on the veggies tonight at dinner. You’ll see why at lunch!

IMG_2708

Dinner was a big homemade salad with grape tomatoes, cucumbers, avocado, and grilled squash, topped with balsamic vinegar and the pieces from the bottom of the Guiltless Gourmet bag, which were a surprisingly tasty addition.

I also threw in a grilled veggie burger for dinner.

Lunch

So, you guys see the good, the bad, and the ugly on Carrots ‘N’ Cake. Today’s lunch was a tad on the “bad” and “ugly” side.

I was running late this morning, so I just grabbed a bunch of foods and hoped for the best. I was also chained to my desk for most of the day, so “convenience” foods were the way to go.

I started with a bowl of fresh cherries.

IMG_2688Then moved onto a Green SuperFood Chocolate Whole Food Energy Bar, which was decent, but not the best bar I’ve ever eaten.

IMG_2691

I liked the chocolate coating!

IMG_2697

And then I ate another bar. This time, I snacked on an Odwalla Super Protein bar. I liked the flavor of this one a lot and it kept me full until dinnertime.

IMG_2699

Mid-morning, I slipped out of the office for a much-needed second iced coffee. Unfortunately, Au Bon Pain has terrible iced coffee, so I only drank about half before throwing out the rest. Oh well.

I’m off to watch Mama Mia from Netflix and enjoy a Blondie Cupcake for dessert.

Good night, guys!

If it makes you feel any better, my lunch happened to a lot of the same thing. Oh well, as long as it’s not an everyday thing, right?

Thanks for the tips, I will definitely be putting some of them to good use

great tips! I love your beauty night tonight. I should start combining all my girly beauty stuff into one night, too.

I do a lot of the things you do, too, including making sure there are NO dirty dishes in the sink when I got to bed! That way I don’t have anything to clean BEFORE I even make breakfast.

Enjoy your night in! I haven’t seen Mama Mia, but I love musicals.

Tina, I hope you don’t feel bad about your lunch since you typically eat a more healthy and nutrition-packed diet than most people I know.

Have a fun girls night!

Love your girls night! I do the same thing when the hubby is away.

As much as I love him dearly, I do look forward to my girl nights. :)

Hope you are having an amazing week Tina! Take care! :)

I try to do laundry during the week, too — it’s SO much better than doing it on the weekends!

P.S. I’m guilty of packing granola and a Nalgene of almond milk for lunch at least once or twice (or three . . . million) times in my past! :) When you’re in a hurry, you’re in a hurry, and anything is better than fast food!

i definitely have my share of granola bars!! Today I was tempted to eat 2 Clif bars…bad..haha.

I definitely feel SO much better when I work out in the AM, but it’s the getting out of be that is rough! ;)

Dinner looks great! I do the same thing when it comes to lunches, just pack a bunch of easy stuff and eat what sounds good.

Even if lunch wasn’t the most balanced, it could be much worse!

Have a great beautifying night :)

LOVE, LOVE, LOVE your suggestions!! I find that I am always busy too and I do many of the things you mention- but not always well and not all the time.

Enjoy your spa night at home!

Tina~

Great post. I was NEVER the girl who could get up early…and then I did Body for Life. I started working out in the morning and haven’t looked back since. I get up at 4:30 am sometimes but it’s a great feeling when your daily workout is done. It leaves me with an abundance of time in the evening for being social, cleaning or prepping for tomorrow:)

Sundays are always spent cooking and prepping meals for work. It’s grab and go which saves time and $$$$

Love your blog!

Yeah ABP has some really funky iced coffee! And you’d think it would be hard to mess up, especially considering how yummy some of their other menu items are! Oh well…

Gotta love beauty nights! I think every girl deserves a night like that once in a while. Too fun! :D

I wasn’t the biggest fan of the amazing grass bar either…it wasn’t *bad*, but there are definitely some better ones out there! ;)

I love this post! I’m all about making the most of weeknights – and Sunday is truly prep day (I cut fruit, defrost chicken and chop it up, measure out snacks, etc.) My husband does that with PB/Js too! haha GREAT ideas – hope you enjoyed your evening and Mama Mia! Can’t wait to try some of your recipes!!

these are great tips – i agree 100%! i actually think your lunch proves that being strapped for time doesn’t mean you can’t at least try to eat healthy. i mean, eating 2 mostly natural bars is a lot better than ordering mcdonalds! don’t be ashamed! :)

Hmm you’re making me want a girls’ night in. :) And at least your lunch was healthy! Even though it was convenient and maybe not as balanced as you’d like, feel good about putting good things in your body.

This is a great post!! Thanks for all the tips! I need to become a morning exerciser. It’s so hard!! I find that I have more energy when I exercise in the afternoon/early evening.

I know what you mean about the girls night in- I love having my boyfriend around but sometimes it’s nice when he is out for the night :-)

I’m a PB & J enthusiast, so I’ve got a question for Mal You obviously know your peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, so from the brand of peanut butter to the type of bread, what’s the ultimate? :D

Girl, there is nothing bad and ugly about what you ate today. You could’ve done worse than a couple of bars, really! Love the beauty routine, I need to take more time on myself :)

I wish my husband ate PB&J, haha!

I agree that ABP has HORRIBLE iced coffee! It’s not that hard to make I wonder what they do to make it absolutely disgusting.

I’m like Mal, I pack my lunch for the week on Sunday and bring it to work on Monday. That way I can check making/packing lunch off of my to do list and don’t have to worry about carrying it everyday or forgetting it.

Love the color you chose for your toes!

I’ve never had the iced coffee at au bon pain – but that’s good to know!

I loved your weeknight pampering – that’s such a perfect way to break up the craziness of the week!

Great post! I do many of the same things as part of my evening routine. Cleaning, laundry and all the other grown-up things that need to be done to maintain a home are much less overwhelming to do in little spurts rather than all at once. I’m also a Sunday evening prepper and a leftover eater.

Mmm I must admit to loving the Amazing Grass chocolate bars!
Great tips. I love cooking in bulk on weekends so that we have healthy lunches and a few dinners to reheat.
I will never be a morning runner though, so I just wake up and do my cleaning then.

I love this idea – I do some of these things now but really should expand on this and be more organized – you’ve inspired me!!

Great post — I love the tips on streamlining — great ideas! I love to get something a little more mind-body in in the morning, and then hit a harder, more aggressive workout to mark the end of my work-day and the beginning of the evening (usually betweeen 4 and 6, or 5 and 7. I opt for bikram yoga, or a good run, or a hard gym workout. This helps me save my morning dynamism for my writing ( and other work), while using all that saved pent-up energy for the later-in-the-day workout. Also, I love to do a little meditation in the morning, or combine a yoga session with meditation. Sometimes I’ll go out for a barefoot walk (good for waking up the senses) and then sit in the park for my morning meditation session.

Wonderful blog — keep up the honesty and the energy!
