Playing Hooky
I’m playing hooky from work today!
Well, just sort of… I’m really not that badass. I took a real vacation day and told my boss all about it, but doesn’t playing hooky from work sound so adventurous?!
My day off isn’t actually all that crazy. I’m meeting my mom to go shopping for my sister’s bridal shower, which is just a few weeks away. We’re planning to buy all of the party supplies and visit Costo for some of the bulk items we’ll need. My sister has been engaged for less than a year, but I am so excited to finally do all of these fun wedding things for her! I know that her Mexican-themed bridal shower is going to be a blast!
Breakfast
Let me preface breakfast by saying that having delicious carrot cake sitting in my fridge is a constant temptation for me!
I seriously considered eating wedding cake again for breakfast this morning, but I came to my senses (and remembered that I ate 3 pieces yesterday
) and decided that cereal with soy milk was a more nutritious option.

I used my special Carrots ‘N’ Cake bowl to eat my cereal trio of Kashi Go Lean Crunch, Peanut Butter Bumpers, and CNC MojaMix.

My bowl of cereal filled me up, so I saved my pear for later. It will likely be a good snack if my mom and I end up eating a late lunch after our shopping trip.

With iced coffee…
I’m squeezing in a quick workout before I drive to my mom’s house. It’s primetime rush-hour, so I might as well do something productive instead of sit in traffic.
Question of the Day
What was the best theme party you have ever attended?

Enjoy your day off!! What a fun day with the ladies of the fam. Have fun!

haha aww I love how you indulged in your birthday cake though! Everytime I eat dessert for breakfast (which does happen on occasion!), it reminds me of sleepovers from when I was little. Don’t you remember just waking up in PJs from a girl’s sleepover and digging into those brownies from the last night! hahaha I always felt SO gross after sleepovers, but had so much fun during them!!! I also just love how everything then just felt so carefree – no feelings of guilt whatsoever from the food. If anything, it might’ve only been concern that the food would dissappear if you didn’t get there quick enough!

Have fun “playing hookie!”
Sounds like a fun day and very well deserved!

Wooohooo, enjoy your day off!!
Two of my girlfriends throw awesome theme parties, it would be hard to just pick one!
Sarah — July 14, 2009 @ 8:25 am
Enjoy your shopping day, sounds like fun! I had a luau shower when I got married and I think that was the best theme party I’ve been to
Lizzie — July 14, 2009 @ 8:31 am
I went to a pretty awesome 90′s party this past weekend…with temp. tatoos and capri suns!
Carolyn (sandyfeeteats.wordpress.com) — July 14, 2009 @ 8:34 am
best theme party, hands down, was a ‘drinking olympics’ while i was in my undergrad- definitely a college throwback! but still a great memory, ever ‘team’ dressed as different countries and people were really creative- my team was ‘finland viking vixens’, but others included ‘neverland’ (peter pan, tinkerbell and the lost boys) and ‘vatican city’ where the whole team dressed as priests. every ‘event’ was a different drinking game, which was obviously meticulously refereed by ‘judges.’ hilarious, but certainly NOT baby shower appropriate!
have fun with your mum!
Becci — July 14, 2009 @ 8:52 am
My bridal shower was the best themed party! It was a hawaiian luau theme…so fun!!!
brandi — July 14, 2009 @ 8:53 am
ooh, have fun today!
MarathonVal — July 14, 2009 @ 8:53 am
One year after returning from a weekend in Vegas, my hubby and I decided to play our next big party around a “casino” theme and it was lots of fun!
brandi — July 14, 2009 @ 8:54 am
i haven’t been to many theme parties, but one of my friends’ birthday was ON halloween so she always had these awesome costume parties. so much fun
Amanda — July 14, 2009 @ 9:01 am
One of the most fun theme parties in college was the “Anything but clothes” party, where you had to get really creative and make your costume out of something other than clothing. There were people in aluminum foil, beer cases, wrapping paper … it was hilarious!

You go girl playing hooky from work.
Is it bad I think that cereal looks better than carrot cake?!

Lucky you! Have a fun day off! Love your cereal bowl. I loved planning my wedding. My colors were black and white-classic. I designed a candy/dessert station-everything was black and white, in big jars, platters, etc. It turned out so cute! We also had Med/Greek food and a gelato bar. I told my hubs I wanted to get married again this summer, just for the party:) Have fun!

We’re planning a college-themed party for the end of the summer. We all graduated about 8 years ago, so we thought it would be fun to get a keg and a DJ, play some drinking games, and just act silly for the day. I can’t wait!
Lizzy — July 14, 2009 @ 9:39 am
Pretending to play hooky is way fun! I hope you have fun. planning parties is such a guilty pleasure of mine because you get to pick out all the fun decorations and plan the meals and snacks! so fun! hope it goes well today!
as for the best themed party. i would have to say a toga party a couple years back. it was fun making our togas and then going out in them. this specific party, if you didnt have a toga on you couldnt get into the party! haha so cool! Enjoy your day!
CaSaundra — July 14, 2009 @ 9:39 am
I want carrot cake for breakfast–sounds fun! Haha!
My fav themed party was actually a Hawaiin one that I had a couple years ago–it was awesome!
Elina (Healthy and Sane) — July 14, 2009 @ 9:41 am
I had 3 slices of cake/day for a few days after our wedding anniversary. It tasted too good to pass up and reminded me of the best day of my life
Hope to see you on Friday!
Emily (A Nutritionist Eats) — July 14, 2009 @ 9:51 am
Cute bowl Tina!!
Kate — July 14, 2009 @ 10:29 am
Ugh. I made a huge lemon cake for my grandparent’s 50th anniversary and now there’s half of it left sitting in my fridge! My brother can have it. Blueberry oatmeal pancakes sounded much better to me anyway.
And I agree with everyone else that thinks “playing hooky” sounds like more fun. “Taking a day off” is so… boring. Hahah.
Christy — July 14, 2009 @ 10:30 am
My favorite themed party was our co-ed engagement party. The rules were to bring a gift according to the time stamped on your invitation. So if you got 8am, then you could give something to use for breakfast in bed (waffle maker, coffee maker, etc.). Then as the times got later it got more interesting, and a lot funnier!
Katie — July 14, 2009 @ 10:45 am
I think the most fun themed party I’ve ever been to was my own bridal shower. The 50′s themed event was held at a local diner. Very “Happy Days.”
janetha — July 14, 2009 @ 11:33 am
an “anything but clothes” party, for sure! people get real creative when it comes to what they use to cover themselves up. super funny!
ratzx31 — July 14, 2009 @ 11:51 am
Hi Tina! i notice your cereals look interesting and yummy! i am wondering what is your serving size for cereals? do you even measure the amount you eat? thanks.
K — July 14, 2009 @ 11:53 am
Have fun shopping for the party!! I haven’t been to that many themed parties but I enjoyed reading the other commenters favorites! They sound fun!
Christina — July 14, 2009 @ 12:15 pm
I went to a twilight party recently that was pretty fun. Halloween theme parties are always the best though. I’m having a Moroccan themed party at the end of the month, which hopefully will turn out to be the best theme party I’ve been to! Good luck shopping today!
Jenny — July 14, 2009 @ 12:23 pm
Congrats to your sis! Enjoy the time with the girls!!!
MySensei — July 14, 2009 @ 2:43 pm
Love playing hooky! Enjoy it
The best themed party I have attended was an 80′s Prom Party. It was hysterical, we all hit the Good Will and Salvation Army (or our own closets, he he) for great poofy, satiny and bright 80′s prom dresses. The host set up one room with a back drop and balloons so we can take prom pictures and had everything else set up like it would be in a gymnasium. Even had a prom king and queen with a spot light dance! It was so much fun and really such a great time.
Lynn (The Actors Diet) — July 14, 2009 @ 2:49 pm
i don’t think i’ve been to a theme party in years….the last “theme” was halloween….and that’s not a theme! lame.
fittingbackin — July 14, 2009 @ 2:50 pm
I took a “mental health day” yesterday!! Glorious! Depends on the audience but I think a Quentin Tarentino theme is fabulous – can play music from his films and see your friends dressed up like your fave characters!!
Cynthia C. — July 14, 2009 @ 4:54 pm
How fun for your sister. WHat a great reason to play hookey
I’m so proud of you for resisting the carrot cake for breakfast…that would have been my choice. But I do love the idea of mixing cereals. Perhaps I might try this. I don’t eat cereal because I can’t decide on one.
Tina — July 14, 2009 @ 5:04 pm
@ratzx31: I don’t measure, but I am guessing about 1/2 cup – 3/4 cup of each cereal.
Stacey — July 14, 2009 @ 5:08 pm
Have fun “playing hooky”! I have never been to a thene party, but I’m sure it would be pretty awesome
Leah — July 14, 2009 @ 10:54 pm
I went to an awesome lingerie party when I was an undergrad – people got really into it and I felt like I was in that music video The Middle by Jimmy Eats World. The only issue is that the party was in the middle of winter – there were definitely some mismatched outfits on the way out!
