Apartment Tour
Happy Monday!
Holy moly, where did that long weekend go?! It flew by! Anyone else not ready to start the work week? I have quite the Monday ahead of me, too. This afternoon, I have a “performance review” with my boss (it’s just an annual thing, but still nerve-racking!) and an interview with Shape magazine. Eek! Wish me luck! I’m going to need it!
Breakfast
Don’t fresh cherries just scream summer?
I was psyched to see them on sale this week at Hannaford’s and bought a huge bag. Mal and I have been munching on them non-stop– we’ve already made a pretty big dent in the bag!

With my bowl of cherries, I had some oatmeal.
In the mix:
- 1/2 cup oats
- 1/2 cup vanilla soy milk
- 2 tbsp ground flaxseed meal
- Raisins, pumpkin seeds, and walnuts
- 2 scoops of almond butter

With iced coffee…

Apartment Tour
After Kath gave readers a tour of her home, I thought it’d be fun to show you guys around my apartment too. The video is kind of long, but I hope you still enjoy the tour!

Thanks for sharing your home! I like your style. Will you be able to get a pug once you’re settled in your new place?
I lived in a tiny 1 bedroom when I was first out of college… I had a big storage room in the basement though – and I stored some stuff at my friends house.
Not very convenient, but I’m a pack rat. Oh well!
on Jul 6th, 2009 at 7:09 am
SO not ready for work today… I managed to get a bit sunburned yesterday, and the last thing I want to do is spend time on a school bus with 60 kids!
Smallest place I ever lived in: 500 square feet for $900 in downtown Chicago. How’d I deal with the lack of space?? I wasnt there much!! My good friend lived about 10 minutes away and I spent a lot of time at her place!
on Jul 6th, 2009 at 7:15 am
First of all, GOOD LUCK today! The interview with Shape sounds like fun, and I’m sure you’ll do great in the performance review.
Second of all, I do love summer cherries – our fridge is stocked with a big bag of ‘em right now. Hmmm… cherry craving!
Lastly, thanks so much for the apartment tour! I know just what you mean about no storage for wedding gifts. We are in dire need of a larger place what with all of our “stuff” plus our cat and dog. Will we get a tour of the new house?!
on Jul 6th, 2009 at 7:17 am
@Elizabeth: Of course!!! There’s a park nearby too! I can’t wait!
on Jul 6th, 2009 at 7:17 am
@Lauren: If everything works out as planned, we’ll be in our new home in early September! Eek!
on Jul 6th, 2009 at 7:18 am
i went cherry picking when we were on our road trip last week, it was so fine, they are SO much better right off the tree
on Jul 6th, 2009 at 7:35 am
thank you for sharing your home with us!
first year here in US I had only one room for me and I tried to make it as cozy as possible, but now I live alone and it’s so much enjoyable to be able to decorate my own place!
on Jul 6th, 2009 at 7:39 am
What a cool tour! The smallest place I ever lived in was during my sophomore and junior year. The apartment was SO tiny and I had no where to put everything. I had too many piles everywhere! haha. I have so much junk, it is hard to find a way to organize it well.
on Jul 6th, 2009 at 7:41 am
Love your home…so cute!
Smallest space I’ve ever lived in was the college dorm, in freshman year. Haha…
The cherries look so good!! I’m picking myself some up this week too.
Hope you have a good Monday back…and good luck with the interview!!
on Jul 6th, 2009 at 7:49 am
Love your apartment! Can’t wait to see what you do with your HOME!!
Smallest places was definitely my college dorm room. It was honestly a cinder block and smaller than any other room in my dorm– what made it even cooler is that my roommate was a very not nice person — gotta love that!
Have a great Monday!
on Jul 6th, 2009 at 7:50 am
I just ate like half a pound of cherries last night. So yummy! I just couldn’t stop!
on Jul 6th, 2009 at 8:01 am
673 square feet = nice space!! Love your decorating and “Pug problem”
Smallest space I’ve lived in = practically a 2×2 dorm room in NYC at Parsons School of Design.
on Jul 6th, 2009 at 8:04 am
As someone who loves watching “Househunters” this tour was fun!! Good luck with your busy day!
on Jul 6th, 2009 at 8:04 am
LOVED the tour! And I’m so happy you guys are finally getting your own house, what a huge step. You can also finally get your pug, although since you’ve been SO patient, I think you deserve to get two.
on Jul 6th, 2009 at 8:05 am
My husband and I (we were just dating at the time) lived in a tiny loft bedroon condo. The downstairs was a a very small open-concept kitchen/living room and a bathroom. It was tough…we were in each other’s faces all the time! The heating bill was cheap though!
on Jul 6th, 2009 at 8:06 am
love your style! very classic and contemporary. i adore fresh cherries too. good luck with both meetings today – you’ll do great!
on Jul 6th, 2009 at 8:11 am
I am very behind – congrats on the house! Another grown up check point I suppose! Good luck with your interview today – is it for a job or are you going to be in the magazine?
Cute apartment. I once lived in a studio – ya know futon for bed and the whole thing like that. I actually kept my cat litter in the tub. It wasn’t bad because I lived all alone.
on Jul 6th, 2009 at 8:26 am
Your apartment is really cute, I would love living in/near Boston. It remeinds me of the little condo we lived in before we got married. We bought/moved into our house 3 weeks after our wedding so we packed on our honeymoon ! But it is so worth it ! We love our house and the extra space ! Your going to LOVE being a home owner !!!!! Enjoy this exciting time !!!!!
on Jul 6th, 2009 at 8:49 am
I am NOT looking forward to returning to work tomorrow. Lovely apartment tour, and I can’t WAIT to hear about your new house! What town is it in?!
on Jul 6th, 2009 at 8:57 am
my dorm room was pretty small, but in terms of non-dorm places, our house is pretty tiny. It’s only about 800 sq. feet, but some of it doesn’t really translate into “liveable” square footage. We only have one bedroom, and the house used to be 2 apartments (1 upstairs, 1 down) and the ceilings/floors downstairs are not level, etc. It was built in the 40s, though, so I guess we can’t ask for much.
congrats on the hosue!!!
on Jul 6th, 2009 at 9:03 am
Since moving to DC I had to learn QUICK to deal with a lack of space! The hardest thing I’ve found is no closets for storage. What I learned though is when I’m forced to deal with no storage I really don’t NEED a lot of what I keep! I tried to be really organized when moving in and got rid of a ton of stuff. It actually is kind of calming to be clutter-free!
on Jul 6th, 2009 at 9:06 am
My husband and I had the tiniest (450 sqft.) apartment when we lived in LA, but luckily we were newly graduated from college and just married and had almost no possessions, not even a couch! Good luck with your review and interview!
on Jul 6th, 2009 at 9:09 am
My first living alone apt was a teeny studio in Allston. One room, a tiny kitchen , and bathroom. I had to grocery shop more often b/c of my mini fridge!
The apt was GROSS! BUT I found it all on my own and paid for it with my first grownup job, so it was all good
on Jul 6th, 2009 at 9:10 am
I live in that small of a space right now. I can’t complain too much it was given to me and has a beautiful view of the Detroit River. If we could sell our co-op we’d love to have more space! but with the economy we’re staying put for a while. btw great pug pillow!
on Jul 6th, 2009 at 9:13 am
I’ve never been as cramped as I was during my freshman year in college. There were three of us packed into a TINY room. Looking back, it has really made me easily spoiled – anything is spacious in comparison!
Thanks for the tour – it was great.
on Jul 6th, 2009 at 9:15 am
Good luck with the interview! So exciting! I can’t see your home from work for some reason so I will check back later from my apt! Smallest space was def. my first college dorm room. I got stuck with 2 other girls too!
on Jul 6th, 2009 at 9:15 am
GOOD LUCK with Shape and the performance review! I’m sure you’ll do great
Actually the smallest apartment I lived in was just after graduating from Boston College – it was a tiny little studio in Cleveland Circle but I actually LOVED it! It was so cute and cozy and perfect for just me!
on Jul 6th, 2009 at 9:28 am
I lived in a one bedroom studio apartment, the kitchen and living room were just one big room and I HATED IT. there was no AC and it got ridiculously hot in the summer! AFter a year, I had had enough so I moved. I kept all of my stuff at my moms empty house in another town and just picked it up after I moved
Good luck with Shape!
on Jul 6th, 2009 at 9:30 am
Good luck at your review later today! I’m still in an apartment now, which is on the smaller side, but the smallest was probably in a group house I lived in four years ago – my bedroom was the size of a shoebox and I literally had to play Tetris with my furniture to make it all fit. Talk about a challenge!
on Jul 6th, 2009 at 9:39 am
I just saw your reply to Elizabeth – I hope you get a pug!!! You guys NEED one
Good luck today – you’ll be great!!
on Jul 6th, 2009 at 9:53 am
I lived in a semi-studio when I was finishing up grad school (my finances had taken a hit because I managed to switch to a (non-funded) master’s from my PhD (b/c I hated it) and file for divorce within a span of about 2 months and this place was only like $350 a month). I say semi-studio because it had a separate tiny kitchen. But other than that it was just the bathroom plus one room that served as both a living room and bedroom. I made do by setting stuff (like the TV) on top of my dresser, and putting a bunch of pillows on my bed so I could sit up on it like a couch. Everything did double duty! It was cramped, but I actually really liked it. It was a charming little apartment. Of course, I realize that my office at work now is about the same size as that main room- Haha!
on Jul 6th, 2009 at 10:04 am
I just watched your video without sound because I’m at work. I love how cute and clean your place is! Everything seems to have a place.
We lived in a 500 square foot box once and became very good at organization.
on Jul 6th, 2009 at 10:04 am
I am excited to go check out that sale on cherries. I keep mine on those Debbie Meyer Green Bags to try and make them last as long as possible since they are crazy expensive. But so worth it!
Thanks for the tour of your place. It is so clean and pretty. I wish my apartment looked half as nice. We haven’t gotten around to decorating it and we’re moving in a year or so. I don’t know if its even worth it now.
Congrats again on the new house! I’m sure you’ll enjoy more space and something to call YOURS.
on Jul 6th, 2009 at 10:09 am
Aw what a quaint apartment! I’d love to move into a space like that after I graduate but I can understand a working couple wanting a house of there own. Congrats by the way on that one! I’m so excited for you
on Jul 6th, 2009 at 10:27 am
Your place is so nice! I love the classic simplicity – very stress-free!!
I live in a 350 square foot studio apartment! When I was looking for places I immediately wrote this place off because I thought there was no way I could survive in such a small space. Honestly, it forced me to only keep what I really love, and it also forces cleanliness! I deal with it by being organized, getting out of my place and being social, and my boyfriend lives a mile away, which definitely helps
on Jul 6th, 2009 at 10:30 am
Cute Apartment!
The smallest house I ever lived in was about 900 sq. feet and I actually preferred it to the almost 2000 sq. feet that we live in now. It was much easier to keep clean
on Jul 6th, 2009 at 10:30 am
Great apartment! I have that table on your patio and the black and white chair in your living room – what would the world do without IKEA?
The smallest place I’ve lived (so far) was this apartment in mission hill the summer after I graduated. I survived by never being at home and staying organized!
on Jul 6th, 2009 at 10:31 am
fresh cherries just scream diarrhea!!! I have a bag , but wont touch them in fear of major diarrhea at work!!! TMI!!!
on Jul 6th, 2009 at 11:12 am
more closets, more space, more ROOM FOR A PUG
freshman year of college i lived in a dorm room made for a single person.. but they put three people in it!! i literally probably had less than 20 square feet for myself and my stuff (clothes, bed, desk, etc.) looking back, i’m not even sure how that was allowed!
on Jul 6th, 2009 at 11:20 am
cherries are so good in the summer time. try them in your overnight oats next time-ridiculously good!
on Jul 6th, 2009 at 11:27 am
Good luck with everything today!!
The smallest place I have lived was the house we just moved out of. We bought it right after we got married. It is 570 square feet and there was me, my husband, and two 70 pound dogs living there. We stayed for 2 years, and now have it up for sale and plan on builing something new as soon as it sells!
on Jul 6th, 2009 at 12:18 pm
Good luck with your interview and performance review! You’ll do great.
on Jul 6th, 2009 at 12:41 pm
Interview with Shape? As in job interview or they are interviewing you? I LOVE LOVE fresh cherries, wish they weren’t so durn expensive though!
on Jul 6th, 2009 at 12:42 pm
That was a fun tour. Yay for Ikea and the Griddler!
Our first place was about 800 square feet, one bedroom. We didn’t have alot of stuff so space was not a problem.
on Jul 6th, 2009 at 12:58 pm
The smallest space I’ve lived in was my dorm room for 8 months when I went back to school for a post degree diploma. I was too old to be living in residence then, that’s for sure!
on Jul 6th, 2009 at 2:09 pm
I live in a 525 sq. foot apartment in DC with my boyfriend. Yeah, it’s small but space is overrated. I would rather die than move into the suburbs!
on Jul 6th, 2009 at 2:29 pm
college dorm.
dealt with it by becoming an ra so i could have my own room. best decision ever.
congrats on the house!
on Jul 6th, 2009 at 2:38 pm
I saw an ADORABLE pug puppy this weekend and thought of you…it was no bigger than the stuffed one on your bed! So cute.
on Jul 6th, 2009 at 2:58 pm
I would say my college dorm, but I had a room at my brother’s during freshman year so I never really stayed in my dorm. I just went there to socialize. I had a 1 BR apartment sophomore year, but it wasn’t too tiny. I can’t wait until I have a bigger kitchen though. The things I will do!
on Jul 6th, 2009 at 3:03 pm
So cute! Love your place!
I live in a 400 square foot studio at the moment but am dreaming of the day when I can find a bigger place, even and extra 100 square feet would make me feel like I was in a mansion
on Jul 6th, 2009 at 3:23 pm
LOVE YOUR PLACE! Super cute – you have FABULOUS decorating skills! Can’t wait to see what you do with the new house! (Congrats again on the big purchase!)
on Jul 6th, 2009 at 4:49 pm
My condo is a tiny 642 square feet which feels even smaller now that I have a dog and a million kitchen appliances. I’ve just learned to live with the clutter and have stopped trying to make my condo look like a magazine and think of it more like a home. I do love it though, since I live alone it’s 100% decked out in things I love. My bedroom is purple and my bathroom is pink.
on Jul 6th, 2009 at 6:39 pm
I love all these aparment/house tours! I’ll have to do one ASAP.
The smallest space so far has definitely been my dorm room since it was super tiny and I shared with another! So hard to find a spot for all your stuff!
on Jul 6th, 2009 at 10:02 pm
Thanks for sharing your apartment! Probably the smallest space was in college, my room sophomore year was teeny.
on Jul 6th, 2009 at 10:05 pm
Loved the tour!!! Neat and clean house you got there
on Jul 6th, 2009 at 11:31 pm
The majority of my apartment furniture is from Ikea too! I have the same desk as the one you have in your living room in white.
I love the view from your balcony!
on Jul 7th, 2009 at 10:06 am
Love the tour! And congrats on the new house
Good luck with Shape!
