You Are What You Eat: Jenna

Hi CNC readers! I’m Jenna from Petitfoodie.  I have been an avid reader of CNC for a year now, so doing a guest post for Tina is quite exciting!

Over the weekend we held a BB-Q at our house for my baby’s 4th birthday. So my fridge and pantry is packed to the gills with festive party food! Whenever having a party or attending a party I like to incorporate healthy eats when I can, while still having some treat food.  Since this was a party for children 2-10 years-old I wanted to have healthy choices along with the usual fun things you see at other children’s parties.  We had a delicious home made potato salad, baked beans with kale, vegetable salad with homemade dressing, vegan cupcakes, and an awesome strawberry cake, along with grilled burgers and hotdogs.

Normally, my fridge is packed full of veggies, left-overs,  drinks and some condiments.  I always love to make extra food for the night before so there are plenty of left-overs for the week’s lunches.  Working 8-5 everyday makes it very challenging to have a healthy lunch.  For me left-overs are a great choice to stay on track and save money by not going out for lunch everyday.   As far as drinks go I do not like having a lot of soft drinks in our home.  We just don’t need them.  The only soft drink you will find on a regular basis in my fridge is ginger-ale.  We currently have a ½ gallon of milk in there as well as a container of hemp milk.  I’m in the process of taking my daughter off of diary products, due to allergies.  I try to limit the number of condiments we have in our fridge, I’m a full believer that food tastes best in it natural form.  When fruits and veggies are fresh and in season they have so much flavor that there is no need to mask them with sugar laden sauces.

My pantry is full of cereals, snacks, canned veggies, pastas and rice.  I try to save money by buying organic produce and non-organic dry goods.  Like many, I can’t afford to buy organic everything(trust me I would if I could) So I compromise.  It works well for me and I feel satisfied with this process.   My pantry is something I’m definitely always trying to work on improving. I have a boyfriend that would live off Little Debbie cakes if he could and a 4-year-old that idealizes everything daddy does/eats.  Most days it’s a constant battle.  I have learned to keep ALL JUNK FOOD ON THE TOP SHELF.  Out of sight; out of mind. We also have had that bottle of tequila in there for 1.5 years…..sort of sad…. lol!

I hope you all have enjoyed this little tour through my fridge and pantry.

Have a great, well-deserved vacation Tina.
