I slept through my alarm again this morning!
But, this time I didn’t manage to squeeze in a workout. I slept well past my alarm and into the morning. I didn’t wake up until 6:35 when Mal woke me before he left the apartment for work. I guess my body was telling me that it needed sleep! Now, I am rushin’ around the apartment eating breakfast, blogging, and getting ready for work. Gah!
Breakfast
I ate a very yummy breakfast this morning: Oats + granola + Barney Butter.
The nice guys at MixMyGranola recently sent me a packet of their “Enhancer Sample Mix” to test out. The ingredients in this mix included Organic Granola, Cranberries, Dried Blueberries, and Roasted Almonds with the enhancers of Caffeine and Lucuma.
About the Enhancers:
Caffeine: Skip you Starbucks and have your caffeinated granola instead. A great way to get your morning started! We are adding 100mg of caffeine which is the equivalent of an 8 ounce cup of coffee.
Lucuma: Lucuma is an excellent source of fiber and beta carotene. Peruvians also use it to flavor ice cream. Healthy and great flavor! Lucuma is considered a healthy alternative sweetener as it lends a sweet taste to recipes, but is very low in sugars. With naturally occurring beta-carotene, niacin, and iron, lucuma powder is a welcome antidote to notorious “empty calorie” sweeteners.
The MixMyGranola Enhancers are a really cool idea for “souping-up” your granola mixes. I don’t think caffeine would be my first choice since I drink at least a cup of coffee per day, but there are a number of enhancers that seem pretty great, such as Spirulina Powder, Bee Pollen Powder, Mangosteen Powder, Green Tea Powder and a bunch that I’ve never heard of, but sound interesting and beneficial. (FYI: There are 16 different enhancers from which to chose.)
Taste-wise, the sample of MixMyGranola with the enhancers was just as delicious as their regular granola mixes. These two enhancers, in particular, didn’t add any weird flavors or aftertaste, and the mix was fantastic blended into my oatmeal this morning!
I’ve resorted to “packets ONLY” as far as having Barney Butter in my house, and the automatic portion control has helped with my BB addiction quite a bit. I can’t be trusted around a jar of this stuff, but I’ve been able to stick to 2 packets with my oats each morning.
I also helps that it’s a pain-in-the-butt to squeeze the almond butter out of those BB packets! It deters me from going back for a third (or forth) packet!
Question of the Day
This morning’s post title inspired today’s Question of the Day…
What is your heritage?
If you’re curious, I am mostly Irish and Italian (possibly Sicilian?) with some French mixed in. I guess this is why I get a sweet tan in the summer, but with freckles all over my face!

I’m a little bit of everything…Mexican, Italian, German, English. The result: very pale skin with dark hair!
Huh… caffeinated cereal… my sister should’ve patented that 8 years ago when she came up with it! My heritage: 100% Eastern European Jewish. Well, until you go waaaaay back, and then we have some African in us. My mom did that genome project thing! Somehow, we’re related to Lenny Kravitz
Hey girl! Glad you got some sleep-Wahoooo for Friday
. Breakfast looks yummy! I actually just placed a mix my granola order for my dad for daddys day and saw all the enhancers. Interesting idea! I am mostly German. Hope you have a fab day
I’m japanese, german, italien, scottish…and the rest is unknown.
Full blown Irish! Have a great day!
Today was a day to sleep in. It is just pouring out!
I am Irish, English, and Austrian with some unknown Eastern European/Russian thrown in.
MMM those oats look tasty! I’m mostly German and a little Irish and Polish..
I’m glad the enhancers don’t make the granola taste weird – I tried the green tea boost from Jamba Juice and it made my smoothie taste gross! I don’t recommend it…
My heritage is mostly German and Irish, but I wish I had some Italian relatives!
TGIF
Breakfast looks amazing!
I’m mostly German with a little Italian. That’s where I get my cooking skills.
I’m German and English.
I have a bowl just like that at my house! Except it’s about 50 years old and says Sascha on it- it belonged to one of my relatives a long time ago.
What a great mixture! I am half-Mexican and half-Iranian. I embrace my heritage and cultures
All of my ancestors were pioneers in the late 1600′s and early 1700′s. They came from Germany and England.
I’m a bunch of stuff…Dutch, Welsh, English, Irish, French. Typical white-girl Northern European heritage. I was always so jealous of my Italian-heritage boyfriend in high school; his skin was so dark and gorgeous and completely acne free!
I think its great that you know yourself well enough and take action as far as your BButter addiction goes!
That granola looks great! yum!
I am 1/4 Norwegian. I love knowing all about peoples heritage, I think it’s very important and a great thing to represent. I have norwegian flags all over the place haha, mainly because my father is a maniac about it.
I can’t wait to check out the mymixgranola enhancers!!! Have a lovely rainy Boston day…when is this weather gonna turn around?haha
50 percent Scottish, 48 percent Canadian…and a dash of german in there as well
I am Irish, German and Polish….. I guess it means I can drink with the best of them huh??? JK. I was going to tell you, I have a little blogger challenge on my blog today, take a look!
Mostly Irish. I have very fair skin that freckles in the shade!
I just bought the 100 supply of BB packets and they just came in the mail yesterday. I love these things-perfectly convienient for on the go AB fix!
I am Irish/English but I married into a pure Russian family. My husband was born in The Ukraine so getting to be a part of their culture has been such a wonderful experience over the past 6 years.
Hope you have a beautiful Friday my dear!
It’s always so frustrating when you sleep throught the alarm! I hate having to then rush through the morning. Oh well. My heritage is mostly Polish, Russian, and German with some Puerto Rican mixed in.
I’m half German and half French. I guess that would qualify as Western European. My grandparents on my dad’s side were born in Germany and spoke mostly German. My mother’s side has been in America for many generations.
I made it up on time today. First time this week tho’.
Sometimes your body simply needs the rest, which just makes your workouts more energetic and overall *better*.
I’m French-Canadian from both my parents, with 1 Irish great grandfather. It’s so interesting to hear about everyones’ heritage.
Sometimes you just have to listen to your body… sleep is just as important as exercise for health, if not more so at times!
My mom is Spanish and Taino Indian. My dad is half African American and half Cherokee. I love my roots… makes me a great dancer hahaha
I mostly German with a little Irish thrown in
I still have yet to try BB but I have a feeling the packets would be a better option for me too, haha. Happy Friday!
Love the bowl! I have one with my name on it that my grandparents got for me!!
I’m Irish, Dutch and English (hence the pale, pale skin!)
Glad you could get the extra sleep – even though it meants skipping your workout!
Ugh. I hate oversleeping. Rushed mornings make me feel behind all day.
I’m a little bit of everything when it comes to heritage. Mostly German and Polish with Irish, English and Scottish thrown in there, too.
Finnish, mixed with Irish and French!
Question! Where do you find Barney Butter? Whole Foods? Trader Joe’s?
@Carly: Barney Butter is available at Whole Foods, but only in certain states. Here’s a list of retail locations: http://www.barneybutter.com/retail.html You can also purchase BB directly through the website.
It is a pain to squeeze those packets! I end up using my teeth to eat the last part (I’m addicted)!
I’m primarily Norwegian with a French/German mix – the area we’re from kept going back and forth between France and Germany in the wars.
@K: Running a butter knife over the packet while on the counter works well too!
Great question! I’m half English (my mom is 100%), and one quarter each of Black Irish, German, Swiss and Scottish.
Half Italian, half Irish – weirdly enough, so is my boyfriend. I joke around that if we had kids they would be 100% Italian and 100% Irish. He insists this can’t happen. Whatever, a girl can dream. haha
my last night is “hochgesang”. i’ll give you one guess at my heritage. and it rhymes with sherman.
Good morning! Glad to know that I’m not the only one who sleeps through her alarm clock sometimes! No sleeping in for me tomorrow, though. I’m running my first 5k, the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure in Raleigh, NC. Wake up by 5 a.m., race starts at 7 a.m. I’m so excited!
I love your blog. Keep it up!
Hey Tina! Your body definitely needed that extra sleep
I find it hard even to get up at 6:35am nevermind earlier! haha
The MixMyGranola Enhancer mix looks really good… yum
Well my father was born in Croatia so that makes me half-Croatian
My mother was born and bred here in Canada. I wish I could say I spoke Croatian but sadly I never learned. It’s never too late I guess…
Have a wonderful day!
So jealous that you tan AND get freckles! I’m Irish and German so I have tons of freckles but burn like crazy!
Ecuadorian, Spaniard, Polish, Lithuanian, French… beat that!
I am 100% Italian all the way!
yeah, those enhancers sound awesome, but I haven’t used all mine yet so I shouldn’t order more
I’m American Indian, French Canadian, and North Carolinian
I also slept through my alarm. Do you ever feel guilty missing a scheduled workout? Because I do! I’m wondering if there is anything I can do to help alleviate this.
I’m Puerto Rican and Italian.
I am mostly German with some English
korean! sometimes i sleep through my alarm that my roommate wakes me up. i dont know what to do..
i think those enhancers are a cool idea! theres so many choices, I’d end up picking them all… lol
i’m Czech!
I’m Scots-Irish, which is actually different than just being a mix of Scottish and Irish – Scots-Irish is its own ethnic group!
I also have a little Swedish thrown in, which is where the blue eyes come from!
100% Italian
I’m 75% Irish and 25% Italian. I have brown eyes and brown hair, but super fair skin and freckles!
I also overslept very late this am! TGIF
I am 3/4 French-Canadian and 1/4 Italian, I get dark in the summer too (with sunblock on of course) and hold my tan until the winter.
Dutch & Lithuanian. Had a great run with my son this morning- nothing like having a kick-butt workout by pushing a 30 lb. kid in a jogger stroller! Thanks for your encouragement to get up & go!
I have no idea what heritage I am. My parents have never done any research and in school I would always be so embarassed when I’d have to write papers about that topic. I am sure there is Native American heritage of some sort since most of my family was born and raised in Oklahoma. I have a fairly ethnic look though and always get asked if I’m Mexican, Italian or Asian, so I always play along and pretend I am for a little while. It’s fun, haha.
I’ve been sleeping through my alarm too! Sometimes your body has to find annoying ways to get what it wants! At least it’s the weekend tomorrow.
