Protein Power and Donut Debate

June 5, 2009

TGIF! 8-)

I started my day with a protein-packed breakfast sandwich on a delicious and impressive hemp bagel (19 grams of protein).

To my bagel, I added an egg white patty (using this method) with chopped sun-dried tomatoes, Munster cheese, and a piece of sliced turkey.

As expected, this sandwich was incredibly satisfying. I have a feeling it’ll hold me over well until lunch.

Food Freebies

  • Donut Day

Get a free donut with the purchase of any beverage at participating Dunkin’ Donuts TODAY (June 5)! Sounds enticing, especially with an iced coffee. Mmmmm! It is Cookie Friday! ;-)

  • Free Ice Cream Day

And if a free donut isn’t enough, get a free scoop (cone or dish) of ice cream at participating Friendly’s on June 6 from noon to 5 o’clock.

Question of the Day

To get a free donut or not get a free donut… that is the question!

Pro: Delicious, free, it won’t kill me to enjoy a donut.

Con: Saturated fat, yucky ingredients

What would you do?

Only get one if it is an amazing homemade style donut …I find that the commerical donuts just don’t cut it in comparison. But then again, life is short so do what YOU wanna do, eat a donut, skip a donut, laugh, play, sing, take a day of food blogging…..enjoy the freedom of life!

Personally I’d probably skip the free donut…. but like you said, it’s cookie Friday, so splurge away sista! :)

First off that sandwich looks to die for!!!! Breakfast sandwiches are my all time fav. I can’t wait to get some hemp bagels and try that!!!
As for the donut, if you want one I think you should get one. I would never buy myself a donut, because I don’t like them, but if I was actually offered a free one when I went in to buy a coffee I don’t think I could turn it down!! Plus not everyday is free donut day!

Kristin @ Iowa Girl Eats June 5, 2009 at 7:37 am

I would definitely get the doughnut. Life is too short to not splurge on delicious, fried, sugary dough once in a while! Ok, well when I type it all out like that, maybe it doesn’t seem all that appealing..eek! Good luck with the decision!! :D

there are pretty treats out there, who cares that it’s free, you know what it tastes like (not THAT great) it’s the weekend, I would rather have JP Licks than a donut! I hope to make it down next week for the Scooper Bowl….have you ever been?

Tina, how great are the hemp bagels? I found them last night @ Whole Foods and tried half. I LOVED the texture. So fantastic to have a meal in itself, in something as yummy as a bagel:) THANKS!!!

I’m lucky I’m not very tempted by donuts. Ice cream on the other hand may be a problem. Good thing I’m heading up north this weekend and there isn’t a Friendly’s for hundreds of miles. I find it hard to resist free food but know that it isn’t really free when I think of the cost to my waistline. Have a great weekend!

Jen June 5, 2009 at 7:39 am

go for the donut! :)

Reply

Leah June 5, 2009 at 7:43 am

I would go for the donut, but I’d work out before getting the donut. I’ve found that eating high fat/sugar foods prior to a work out slows me down, but maybe that’s just me.

You could also take a bite, and put it back in the bag. You may find that you’re just happy having a taste and getting it for free! But if you haven’t had a donut for a long time and are really craving one, go ahead and indulge!

Megan June 5, 2009 at 7:49 am

I say if you don’t do it alot get the donut! If its something you really enjoy. why not? You eat well all the time, splurging is worth it.

Sarah (Running to Slow Things Down) June 5, 2009 at 7:51 am

It depends on what they looked like when I got there. If there were slim pickings, and they looked all smushed, I’d pass and get the cookie instead.

IF, however, I walked in and they were freshly made, tons of choices, I would get the donut if that’s what I was in the mood for.

I think I would personally go to starbucks, get an iced soy latte, and buy something really good from a bakery. ;) I think it might be more satisfying, depending on what I bought (donuts just go by so fast!.) BUT, if a donut is sounding really good, go with that. Moderation is key. :D

Alison June 5, 2009 at 7:54 am

I’d say get a donut if you like them. I don’t love donuts, but I eat them so rarely that just one is like a luxury item.

Reply

Shelby June 5, 2009 at 7:55 am

I would go for it! As long as they are freshly made and not stale, then its well worth it!

Just listen to your body. If you feel like having one, don’t deprive yourself.

Emily (Healthy Fit Mama) June 5, 2009 at 8:14 am

Personally, I’d skip the donut. I used to love them, but ever since I stopped eating them regularly I can’t really eat more than one bite. Plus, there are much better treats out there that I’d rather splurge on! However, if you see one that looks too good to pass up, go for it! There’s no law that says you have to eat the whole thing anyway! :-)

Reply

Christina June 5, 2009 at 8:15 am

I probably wouldn’t get the donut, there’s just so many other desserts I’d rather splurge on. Aren’t they usually like 60 cents anyways? A cookie sounds much more delicious!

Reply

zenfreckle June 5, 2009 at 8:19 am

I always use the ‘how will I feel when I finish eating it’ test. Now that I eat whole foods for the most part things like donuts no longer taste as delicious as I remember them. I like to indulge but I want it to really taste good. I would splurge on a yummy dessert from someplace else before eating a gross donut. But whatever you decide I am sure it will be tasty for you!

Reply

Sammie June 5, 2009 at 8:20 am

I personally have never been a donut eater or anything fried for that matter so a free donut would not tempt me in the slightest. I would splurge on the cookie, especially if it were oatmeal raisin, mmmmm!! Happy Friday.

Lauren June 5, 2009 at 8:34 am

I have to find these hemp bagels, they look fantastic.

Meh, I have never liked donuts, so I would say go with a cookie if you are deciding between the two! If you really want a donut, though, get that–listen to your instincts! Eating one donut is certainly not detrimental to anyone’s health.

Reply

Lauren A June 5, 2009 at 8:38 am

i’d skip it knowing how bad i would feel afterwards from all the sugar and saturated fats. however, i wouldn’t skip a hazelnut flavored iced coffee!! i’m jealous you have a DD by you, we don’t even have one!

Reply

Kathryn June 5, 2009 at 8:38 am

Make Oh She Glows 100 calorie donuts :) A splurge without a over 600 calorie splurge on something not even remotely healthy, buuuut sooo good lol But definitely cookies are better if your debating between the two. Especially a Gluten Free flax or sugar cookie now I am craving a cookie it maybe a whole foods run day lol

Stefanie June 5, 2009 at 8:41 am

I’m going to get a free donut!
:)
(and yours looks yummy!)

Reply

Anna June 5, 2009 at 8:41 am

Go for the donut! You’re right, it won’t kill ya. And I think a plain DD donut is only something like 200ish calories? Not too shabby!

Reply

Heather June 5, 2009 at 8:50 am

If you’re going to be going right by a Dunkin’ Donuts, go for it :) I was reminded on my way to work about free donut day… but I had just finished a bowl of overnight oats and I’m so full! Maybe for an afternoon treat instead of a cookie…? TGIF!

Reply

Meghan June 5, 2009 at 8:51 am

I am not a fan of donuts at all. They are probably the last thing I would crave. I just don’t enjoy the taste that much and they REALLY sit in my stomach. Now Ben & Jerry’s Free Cone Day. . . I was all over that!

Your breakfast made me drool :) I’m sure it will hold you til lunch! Keep us posted!!! Love the egg white patty method :)

Since it is your declared cookie friday, I would treat yourself to a donut AND a iced coffe :)

have you had a chance to play around with more apps for iphone? i’d be curious…i’m holding out to get a phone when the new one comes out…and I was browsing apps last night butI got so dizzy reading reviews and trying to find the best apps. I stumbled across a blog press ap that works for bloggin – I’d be interested to know if its worth it. not that “we” blog that often on the road w/o our laptops but i could see it coming in handy

Ha, I don’t even have to make a choice! We don’t have a Friendly’s here OR a dunkin donuts :) Sad, right? :)

I need to find those bagels! They look so good.

Reply

carolinebee June 5, 2009 at 9:04 am

So sad we don’t have either of them either!! I would totally get the free donut, I have an automatic body response to accept anything free :D

Hmm, I woke up craving a donut and you just made it extra hard to resist the urge to hit up Dunks ;)

Ah that bagel looks so fluffy! Muenster is one of my favorite cheeses :)

I say since it’s technically cookie Friday, if you want the donut, have the donut!

Reply

rhodeygirl June 5, 2009 at 9:20 am

don’t get the donut!

i would buy the usual cookie, because not only do donuts feel yucky in the body but you’ll probs feel empty from is! a cookie at least will 1. satisfy you and 2. have less scary ingredients!

Breakfast sandwich looks amazing!! YUM!!

For me the donut decision is easy…I can’t eat gluten, so no donut! LOL! Sometimes having to follow a GF diet comes in handy. ;) Always looking for the postive. :)

Katherine June 5, 2009 at 9:30 am

I think I’d probably pass on the donut, but that’s because I just don’t happen to be in the mood for one right now! I’m sure if someone had a box of munchkins nearby, I’d be all over them in a second ;-)

If you do get one, enjoy!

That bagel sandwich looks awesome! I think it will definitely hold you until lunch. I checked out the bakery’s website and a lot of their items look like they are worth trying. They even have a nice selection of gluten-free products. My dad has Celiac disease so maybe I’ll have to get him a little treat. :)

Have a great Friday!

Happy Friday Tina!! Breakfast sandwich looks really good! Yummy! The bagel looks so hearty and healthy- something all bagels don’t offer.

MMMM donut- I might get one although I have eaten enough chocolate lately to cover the sweet tooth. This weekend I have to sit down and map out a plan to get me back on track. The “cookie Friday” mentality is needed and I love the way you do that. I had no problems with this in the past but lately I have been stressed and have had a much more lax attitude. Things must change this weekend! :-)

Have a wonderful Friday!

I don’t know if yall have Krispy Kreme there (I am in Alabama), but they have free donut day too, and without a purchase! I already have mine, but waiting till after lunch to enjoy. That is when my sweet tooth kicks in!

We don’t have Dunkin Donuts in Utah, but I don’t like donuts so I don’t care. No temptation for me. I do love cookies so I am glad it is Cookie Friday. I might have to join you today!

go for the donut, babes! Everyone deserves a lil splurge – you deserve it! one of the main reasons we work out! — so that we can eat without guilt in times like this ;)

april June 5, 2009 at 9:47 am

I’d say go for the donut! The only reason why I wouldn’t get one is because my stomach doesn’t agree with them :(

Reply

Amy June 5, 2009 at 9:57 am

I love donuts as a treat once in a while so I’d get one. :) I can’t eat ice cream since it upsets my stomach so I never get the free ice cream cones but if a free donut comes with a coffee I’d get anyway then I’d go for it. I’m all for carby goodness anyway. Besides, the glazed and some of the others really aren’t that bad as far as calories go. I think they all land around 200 calories (not 600 like a previous poster wrote). :P

Probably wouldn’t go for the donut :( even though they are heavenly!!! I’ve seen lots of pics recently of baked banana donuts that I would love to try though.. yum yum :)

Tina, I kid you not, I was having this same debate with myself this morning. In the end, I won, the donut lost. Why? Because I am headed into a weekend that will no doubt include a few beers and other fun snacks. And here’s my other thought — Dunkin Donuts are like 79 cents each and I dont want them ever. Does it really matter if they are free? nope! Enjoy cookie Friday!

Get the donut! The great thing about eating real food all the time is that you can get crappy stuff every once in a while and not feel a bit guilty!
