I woke up feeling a million times better my splurge-fest last night. And, surprisingly, I even woke up feeling a little bit hungry! Weird, right? All I know is that I am back on track today!
A few thoughts/tips about getting back on track after a splurge:
- I always remember that I can get back on track. There is never a wrong time to focus on healthy eating. The splurge is in the past, and now all I can do is get myself back on the right track. There’s no point in beating myself up over it.
- Some people reduce their calorie intake to compensate for a splurge. If this works for you, great. Keep on doing what works for you. For me, cutting calories makes me feel deprived (and unhappy), so I don’t do it. Instead, I eat normally the next day.
- After a splurge, I eat normally, but try to focus on selecting extra nutritious foods, like fresh fruits and veggies, whole grains, lean protein, and, of course, lots of water. Knowing that I am consuming the best possible options makes me feel better about over-doing-it.
- A sweaty workout after overindulging always makes me feel better. I make sure to schedule one into my day.
- For me, life is too short not to splurge from time-to-time. However, I make it a point to identify why I went overboard in the first place. This helps me the next time I am faced with a splurge-type of situation. Live and learn.
Breakfast
This morning’s breakfast consisted of three delicious parts: Fruit salad, pumpkin oats, and iced coffee.
In my oat bowl:
- 1/2 cup dry oats
- 2 tbsp wheat bran
- 1/3 cup canned pumpkin
- 1/2 cup vanilla hemp milk
- Splash of water
- Barney Butter
Question of the Day
I’ve already asked this question on the blog, but it’s always a fun one! Plus, I love finding birthday twins!
When is your birthday?
I’ll go first: June 19, 1980. I’ll be 29 on Friday– the final year of my 20′s!

Great message about getting back on track! We all need a little break every now and then!
My bday is December 17 1976! I guess I’m one of the older ones!
I just turned 28 in May, so my bday is May 23, 1981! I’m actually loving my late 20′s- I have more money, less debt and I’m more confident. At this rate I think 30 is going to be awesome! Happy Birthday Week!
Question about your oats- do you stir in the pumpkin at the end or during cooking?
This post was very appropriate for me today… I overindulged quite a bit this weekend and was feeling like a slug yesterday. I really like the feeling of getting back on track though and these tips were great!
My birthday is April 30, 1977. Happy early birthday!
JULY 21 I’ll be 26. woot woot to summer bdays!!!
My birthday is Aug 4, 1971. I will be 38 this year…ACK! almost 40 soon! Birthdays are great for celebrating and I usually over indulge too! Your breakfast looks yummy today!

My birthday is December 25!
My birthday is August 10, 1981. I share this birth date with one of my former bosses. The weird thing is that we’re both freakishly scared of frogs. I think it has something to do with the birthday!
Great tips- especially the one about not restricting the next day. =)
Also, this is random, but your garlic bread from last night looked really good! Would you mind posting the recipe?
February 5th!
The age of Aquarius

And I love your tips on splurging. I feel the same way. I hate cutting calories because then I feel so unhappy and grumpy. I always drink tons and tons of water after a splurging day. Then I feel like I’m flushing out those things out of me. haha
March 4, 1959. Sounds old when I see the 1959! I don’t feel old though.
April 6th, 1989. Great splurge advice!!!!
March 29th 1991. And I totally agree on the splurging thing; if you’re living life a good and healthy way, it really doesn’t matter because it all balances out in the end
March 15, 1982. I love my birthday!
And I love your after splurge techniques. I do the same thing.
6/24/80 – we’re almost b-day twins. I can’t believe it’s my last year in the 20s gah!!!!!
My birthday was last thursday, June 11th! Love your pretty breakfast!! Perfect after a splurge!
Mine is February 7. I was supposed to be a mid-March baby but decided I wanted to come early. So, if any of you know people who delivered (or you did) at 35 weeks…take comfort. I think I turned out okay!
Wow I see lots of July birthdays!
I will be 27 on July 16th.
May 24th 1982
Oooh Evan and Meg! My birthday is May 29th! So when I’m your age, Tina, it’ll be my golden birthday
hope it’s the best year for you yet!
My grandmother’s birthday is June 19th as well! She was born in 1920, so she’ll be 89 this year… it’s great to know that TWO kick butt ladies were born on this day!
may 4th 1992!
You are so down to earth! Love the tips!
My b-day is Jan 9th. I share a b-day with my Mom.
How cool is that?
July 24th, 1978- 30, flirty & fabulous
– It’s good that you realized how you felt after your splurge. It really does make you only want to eat like that on occasion and get back to eating healthy! Nothing wrong with a little splurge now and then!
Nov. 3rd! I think I’m the third one here with that day. Go Scorpios!
My birthday is February 4th. It’s my favorite day of the whole year! I know in the future, turning another year older might become harder to be happy about, but I can’t imagine ever being UNhappy on my birthday. A whole day of good wishes, presents and CAKE–and it’s the one day where it’s ok to be all about me! What could be better!?
A little indulgence is totally warranted – especially during your birthday week!
Oh! And, my bday is August 14th, 1982!
October 23, 1978…the 30th year is even better Tina!
great tips! I just got back from vacation yesterday, so I’m getting back on track, too! I actually posted my favorite ‘get-back-on-track’ recipe, you should check it out!

Amazing tips, I will keep them in mind next time I splurge.
My birthday is July 9, 1993.
February 21st. I am 28.
Brandi and I were born 4 days apart! I was born June 28, 1983 so I’ll be 26 this year. Interesting fact: I was born on my parents’ wedding anniversary and my mom always says I was the best anniversary present she ever received!
August 26, 1987
I think you overindulged b/c you had such a light lunch!
Love the breakfast!! I was born in Feb 2 1983. My dads bday is on June 19th!!
Feb. 5th! Happy B-day week! I used to get mad at myself for splurges, but now I just enjoy them and get on track the next day. It is good to indulge sometimes. Everything in moderation and exercise:)
I’m March 23rd, 1985. Seems like there’s a lot of March b-days but no birthday twin yet.
You just made me crave oats so badly!
May 9th 1980, I’m 29.
Tina, I think you have a great attitude about getting back on track after a splurge. It’s so easy to berate yourself, but to just let go of it and move on is so much healthier.
My birthday is January 10th — I’m also living up my last year of my 20s!
Are you giving a prize for the oldest? If so I think I’d win – Feb. 11, 1957. I’m 52 and just started a food blog – just goes to show that you can teach an old dog new tricks!
I love your tips… they’re really useful after my weekend of grandma’s homemade baked goods (yum)
My brithday is March 24th, 1987
Your birthday is the same day as my sister!
Mine is August 12, 1979…I only have 2 months left of my 20′s!
I think the most important thing to remember is that you can get back on track NOW. I’ve found myself in the past saying “oh, I’ll get back on track next week” and then it never happens. I have to start TODAY! Thanks for the reminder
Great after-splurge tips, thanks!!
My birthday is July 17, 1981. I don’t intend to ever get older than 29 ;–)
