Farmers’ Market at Harvard

June 17, 2009

The long wait has finally ended! Yesterday afternoon kicked-off the Farmers’ Market at Harvard, which is literally yards from my office building. I am so psyched to have easy access to good, fresh produce for the next 4 months!

For those of you nearby, the Farmers’ Market at Harvard is open on Tuesdays from 12:30-6:00 pm on the lawn between Memorial Hall and the Science Center, near the intersection of Oxford and Kirkland Streets.

Yesterday’s line-up of farmers, bakers, and specialty vendors included:

  • Plato’s Harvest Organic Farm – organic produce, eggs, and meats from Middleboro, MA
  • Lanni Orchards – produce, herbs, flowers, and jams from Lunenburg, MA
  • Silverbrook Farms – produce, jams, herbs, pies, honey, and more from Dartmouth, MA
  • Ward’s Berry Farm – potted herbs, berries, and produce from Sharon, MA
  • Mariposa Bakery – breads, scones, brownies, and pretzels baked in Cambridge, MA
  • The Danish Pastry House – pastries, cookies, and Scandinavian breads from Medford, MA
  • Shootflying Hill Sauce Co. – dessert sauces: milk chocolate, dark chocolate, salty butterscotch, and peach bourbon from Brookline, MA
  • Deborah’s Kitchen – all-natural, low sugar fruit spreads, relishes, and chutney from Littleton, MA
  • The Herb Lyceum at Gilson’s – potted herbs, flowers, herbal soaps, teas, and honeys from Groton, MA
  • The Warren Farm and Sugar House – maple syrup, maple products, jams, and sauces from North Brookfield, MA
  • Taza Chocolate – organic, stone-ground, Mexican-style chocolate from Somerville, MA
  • Fiore di Nonno – fresh mozzarella made daily in Somerville, MA
  • Q’s Nuts – fresh roasted savory, exotic, and sweet nuts from Georgetown, MA + scoops of Christina’s ice cream and sorbet from Cambridge, MA
  • Macro-Mediterranean – sign up for a local meal delivery service that combines philosophies of the Mediterranean diet with macrobiotic eating (this will be their only appearance at our market!!)
  • Cape Ann Fresh Catch – community-supported fishery that will be dropping off shares of fresh fish from Gloucester, MA

So many good things!!!

I didn’t end up buying anything yesterday because I am leaving for a week and I didn’t want my fresh produce to spoil before I had a chance to eat it. But, I seriously cannot wait for the Farmers’ Market when I return!

What are your favorite Farmers’ Market finds?

I love eating the samples. It’s like an outdoor, fresh costco!

What a convenient location – lucky girl! In addition to the fresh veggies I usually buy, I love the artisanal products like homemade peanut butter and specialty jams that usually are available at my market!

Love it! The farmers market is such a fun place to visit. There is a lady at the Charleston farmers market who makes the most AMAZING homemade soft pretzels!!! Also love the peaches :)

We are going to our market on Sat. morning. the market is my favorite thing about summer. Last year we found a pepper guy who sold us HUGE red, yellow, orange, green, etc. peppers for 25 cents and they were soooo nice! We roasted them and put them in the freezer. Can’t wait to stock up again!

“Your” Farmers’ Market sounds awesome! I love EVERYTHING at the Farmers’ Market: the produce, the fruits, the breads, the cheese, the toffee, the samples, the coffee, the flowers, the pies, the cookies – Yes, I am Farmers’ Market obsessed! :)

Ahh!! You’re so lucky to have that so close by! :D

I love picking up tomatoes and cucumbers from farmers markets. It’s such a nice change from grocery store foods, since they taste so amazing. Especially the heirloom tomatoes…mmm…can’t wait! :D

I love the strawberries, peaches, and heirloom tomatoes. And closer to fall, the apples and cider. We recently joined the Cape Ann Fresh Catch. I can’t wait to start receiving our catch of the week!

Corn!!! and if there’s good local honey I’m all over that too. A little later in the season I love getting squash…butternut and spaghetti especially. Always so much better and cheaper from the farmers themselves. :)

I actually don’t think I’ve ever been to a summery farmer’s market, I usually just go in the fall, which is totally about to change. You’re so lucky that there’s one so close to your job!

Hey! I just came across your blog. I love Harvard Square. The one thing I miss about being in treatment there is all of the excitement that goes on. I love farmers markets! You really get the best stuff there!

That is great that you have an FM so close – and one with so much variety! I like talking to the vendors and other shoppers. The FM I go to has a lady who makes sheep’s milk cheese :-O. Strawberries are my current fave…their smell alone is mouth-watering!

I tried Fiddleheads for the first time by finding them at the farmer’s market. I love the fresh cheeses and the local meats.

I have a farmer’s right by my office on Thursdays that I adore! It’s small, but you can’t beat the convenience of walking out of your office at the end of the day and picking up your goodies. My favorite thing at that market is the sheep’s milk cheeses from Everona Dairy. AMAZING!

I actually try to stay away from farmers markets…we have them all year round in southern CA, and everything is SO expensive that I get into so much trouble :-D but my favorite thing to buy when I do indulge is fresh herbs…SO delicious! And I also usually get bread or a sweet treat from the local bakeries that come out to the markets.

I went to our local farmers market on Tuesday. I enjoy fresh vegtables and purchased several items. My favorite purchase was purple green beans that would turn green when cooked. I tried them tonight and they do turn green and taste great!!

Do you consider the Friday Haymarket a farmers’ market (I live in Boston too)? or is it really just the overflow from grocery stores…. Either way, so much tasty food, people from all walks, excitement in the air, smells (good and funky), and great prices!

I think this will be my favorite part of summer – seeing everyone’s farmer’s market posts! I like getting fresh herbs at the market, or unique things like cheese and nuts.

Nothing screams summer like the opening of the farmers’ market! I always really like all the exotic produce at farmers’ markets, like purple carrots and round zucchini–so fun!

I can’t tell you how jealous I am of you being SO CLOSE to the FM!!! Mine is 1 1/2 miles away which is too far to walk when you are loaded up with produce! But nothing is more relaxing in the summer than a good ole Farmers Market :)

I love when they have more variety than the typical Jewel’s does, like purple potatoes or patty pan squash!

this looks liks such a great farmers market! They can be so hard to find. I hate going to one and expecting to see a plethora of fresh fruits and veggies and its nothing but flowers, homemade desserts.

Do people not have year round Farmer’s Markets? I guess I should consider myself lucky if that’s the case. I live down the street from one that happens every weekend. The best thing at my market is probably the live music, the stone ground grits man, the glass blower (not always there), and the beautiful vegetables. I live in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.

I love when I find new veggies to try – things that aren’t available that much in regular stores (like ramps, garlic scraps, fresh spring peas, etc.)

I’m also always buying fresh flowers and berries!

The pictures look so fun. My daughter’s friend works steps from there too so she will be happy.
Tomatoes, peaches, nuts, jams, honey and fresh flowers!

I like buying tomatoes at the farmer’s markets because they are so juicy and sweet! Plus I like finding nifty little baked goods, recently vegan pumpkin muffins :)

I just discovered green garlic at my local farmers market. I live in Chicago so it isn’t warm enough for a lot of produce yet, but this green garlic is delicious! If scallions and garlic had a baby, they would make green garlic. I’ve put it in everything I’ve eaten this week and can’t wait to get more when the farmers market opens Sunday!

Farmers markets are the death of me! I can’t just buy a few things! So amazing though.
