Surprisingly, my doctor gave me some good news this morning! After diagnosing me with Iliotibial Band Syndrome and explaining what was going on with my hip, my doctor told me that I could run the race! I’m not going to lie, I was pretty shocked. I honestly thought she was going to tell me not to run, but instead she said to do it! She even said if she was in my shoes, she’d run the race! Of course, my doc told me to stop if my hip started to hurt while running, but hopefully, it will make it all 13.1 miles! I’m psyched to have the green light to run, especially after all of the training time I’ve put in!
Lunch
I ended up being at my doctor’s appointment a lot longer than expected (more on that later), so I ate lunch at my desk in order to catch up with work. I started with a homemade salad topped with walnuts and just a splash of balsamic vinegar that I added this morning (which didn’t make my salad soggy).
After my salad, I dug into a Better Whey Yogurt to which I added Kashi Go Lean Crunch cereal. I also ate a dark chocolate Adora disk.
My review of Better Whey: I liked it a lot! I love that the Better Whey Yogurt didn’t have a ton of added sugar and that its flavor wasn’t too, too sweet. I usually like flavored yogurts, but tend to stick with the plain varieties because to avoid all that added sugar. According to the Better Whey website, their yogurts have “30% less sugar than the leading yogurt.”
The Acai Mixed Berrry flavor that I tried had a slightly tangy flavor, a tad artificial, but I liked it! It gave it a zing! And, of course, I liked that this single yogurt container packed-in 15 grams of protein! It actually kept my stomach content all afternoon long. Well, I did end up munching on some grapes around 3:30, but I think I mistook my dehydration for hunger. The juiciness of the grapes was particularly satisfying!
Dinner
When I got home from work, I was starving, but Mal wasn’t home for dinner yet. I snacked on some Kettle Backyard BBQ chips and read some blogs while I waited for him to arrive home.
When I was at my facial last night, my hubby whipped up dinner for himself: cheddar and broccoli “malzone,” using a store-bought dough. Lucky for me, there was lots of leftovers. Tonight, dinner took a just a few minutes to reheat in the microwave.
Inside of the calzone: steamed broccoli, shredded cheddar cheese, and marinara sauce. Outside of the calzone: garlic powder, seasoned salt, and olive oil.
Calzone + salad = delicious and filling! Love that!
My sweet tooth just kicked in! Off to seek out dessert!
G’ night, friends!

I’m glad your doc appointment went well and you are able to run the 1/2!
That calzone looks delicious. Mmm…
Glad to hear you’ve been given the thumbs up to run the race!
tina,
i’ve been reading your blog, but first time commenting. i had IT band syndrome, during my marathon training, and the #1 thing that helped me was the foam roll. foam roll + stretching the entire side, which your doctor might have shown you. ever since i’ve been consistent with those two, i was able to get back on my feet, and am about to tackle my first marathon on monday!! (los angeles) GOOD LUCK!
That’s great news! IT band syndrome is pretty common and not at all a big deal – just make good friends with your foam roller and you’ll be good to go.
HOORAY! What great news!!
You NEED a foam roller! Seriously, I struggled with IT band issues forever until I bought one of those. It will make an amazing difference!!
Great news about running. Good luck with the race!
that’s awesome, tina!
ha- love the “malzone”
malzone – hahahaha LOVE it
Awesome! That’s great news. I hope everything goes well during the race.
Yay – you get to run! Maybe I’ll see you at the starting line!
That “Malzone” looks delish. Yay for you being able to run. I’m loving running lately for some strange reason – actually have to force myself to take days off.
Yes, IT band syndrome is SUPER common. If you find it hurting while running you can self massage the band itself to temporarily get you to the next stage at least. I do that a lot. It buys me some time. I’m sure you know to roll on the foam roller (kills but works) any time you can, just to loosen up the IT fascia. I’m sure she gave you an Rx for Physical Therapy or something of the sort because you’ll need it for maintanence. Good luck.
Good luck on the half marathon. Remember that some soreness is normal during a longer run. One rule I follow that seems to work well and prevent serious injury is this. General soreness is ok, keep going. Sharp pain is bad, Stop!
Glad to hear the good news Tina! The malzone looks very tasty indeed. Sorry for not commenting as much lately – I have been running ragged lately with the house sale and planning the new one as well as real work and life I guess. I am trying to read all your posts as I enjoy them but I may be slightly delayed.
zesty
hey tina! im an avid runner– used to be 5 miles every day for 3 years until i was diagnosed with ITB in january and havent been able to run since– i’ve switched over to the elliptical and then last week had to stop all cardio all together… i’m slowly starting to work up the cardio again but its a VERY fussy injury to deal with!! PT has definitely helped me out, as has strenghtening and foam rolling! just be careful! wish you the best and i know you’ll rock it out at the race
xox
That calzone looks amazing and rather easy to make. I’m glad you are going to be able to run the race!
Tina I am so happy for you, great news!!!
So happy you’re going to be able to run! I’m sure it’s a great relief for you to get the go ahead from a doctor
Love the “malzone.” It looks extremely tasty!
That’s wonderful that you got the ok to run! Good luck! Remember, any sign of pain, don’t be afraid to take it easy or walk! You don’t want to cause further damage!!
So glad to hear your good news! Good luck!
That malzone looks crazy delicious. I have actually been looking for a storebought dough–what brand did you use?
Congratulations!!!!! That certainly is great news
YAAAY tina i’m so happy for you! i’m glad that you can run the race and that your hip is feeling better!
Great news about the race, Tina! You must be so relieved
I’ll have to pick up some of the Better Whey yogurt, b/c I too tend to avoid overly sugary yogurts.
I love the “malzone”!
That is SUCH great news – I am sooo happy for you!! You’ll have lots of bloggie friends sending good thoughts your way this weekend.
So happy you can still run the race!
that’s such great news!!! I was actually diagnosed with ITBS too and it started in my knee and now my hip is hurting! Would you be able to describe the pain in your hip?? I am figuring that it’s just the ITBS moving up to affecting my hip (perhaps from foam rolling??) rather then something else (my fear is that it’s a stress fracture). I know I should go back to the doc..
That looks delicious. A few of my friends are also running the race this weekend and are having knee problems.
I wish you all lots of luck!
I met with a PT who gave me awesome IT band exercises that had me up and running pain free pretty quick. Let me know if you need any!
That’s…great? Just kidding, I know you actually enjoy racing
I love the malzone. Ya’ll are goofs!
