iPhone? Vegan Cookbook Review

May 8, 2009

Happy FRIDAY! 8-)

We have another contender for our Top 10 contest! Isn’t this pug adorable? Mal said the pug looks like he is in his “awkward teenage years,” but I think he’s cute! Now I need to vote a pug off the fridge to make room for this guy. Let me tell you, it’s going to be a tough decision!

Breakfast

Not surprisingly, I didn’t wake up starving like I usually do. I ate a huge dinner last night with lots of satisfying protein (and sugar! ), which kept my hunger at bay until the morning.

Instead of my ever-reliable oatmeal, I went with a lighter breakfast this morning: whole wheat toast with cashew butter + pumpkin seeds and Barney Butter + ground flaxseeds meal, grapes, and strawberries. This meal didn’t hold me over at all last Wednesday, but I am a different type of “hungry” this morning. Let’s hope this meal does the trick! (I took a “Skinny” Oatmeal Raisin Bar to go just in case I get hungry mid-morning like I did last time.)

With iced coffee with chocolate soy milk…

Review of PETA’s Vegan College Cookbook

I’ve been out of college for many years now, but PETA’s Vegan College Cookbook: 275 Easy, Cheap, and Delicious Recipes to Keep You Vegan at School has some great recipes for nights when you don’t have a lot of time to cook (or are not in the mood to cook!). Flipping through the recipes, I found a number of simple, healthy, and satisfying meals and snacks that don’t require expensive, hard-to-find ingredients or elaborate cooking equipment. (In fact, only some of the recipes require a microwave and/or blender.) In particurlar, the recipes for smoothies and desserts look delicious to me– hello, Fake Blondies! :-D The only thing that I wasn’t crazy about, but expected, was the recommendation to use fake cheese and meats for many of the recipes. For a vegan this make perfect sense, but for me, I’d rather substitute the real thing.

Bottom line: If you are in college and vegan, this is the cookbook to buy! If you’re not in college and not vegan, but just looking for an easier way to eat healthy and perhaps don’t know how, this cookbook gives you a ton of simple, fast, and healthy recipes.

Question of the Day

Do you have an iPhone? If you do, what do you think?

Haha, I kind of see the awkward teenage years in this pug.
I just got an iphone this past weekend and I love it already. I’m sure I’ll love it even more once I figure out how to use all the apps :)

I have an iPhone here in Boston and I absolutely love it. There are so many apps and cool add-ons and it is very reliable. I highly recommend it if your getting one. + they are coming out with their latest software this summer!

I just got an iPhone for my 21st bday on Tuesday, and I am already obsessed!!! I was worried that it would be hard to get used to, but it is SO easy and fun!! Definitely a winner :)

I made some granola bars following your recipe with my on add-ins and they turned out great!

This cookbook sounds really good! I don’t think I could do the fake cheese and meat either. :)

I think I’m going to try that recipe book! I’m in college and, although I’m not vegan, I would like to incorporate more vegan foods into my diet.

My best friend has an iPhone and loves it. Because her whole family ended up switching to iPhones, she got a good deal!

I just got an iphone and love it. If you are already with AT&T, you might be able to get a refurbished one (factory refurbished with a 1 year warranty) for $100. That is what I did.

Oh gosh I want an iPhone in the worst kind of way!! I just don’t want to switch over to AT&T – they have really bad coverage in my area!

Hahah.. I love Mal’s comment about the pug. I think the pug is asking for a “pupcake”!

I know what you mean about having an appetite this morning. I couldn’t finish my seemingly bottomless bowl of oats – I was still satiated from last night’s goodies! Thanks again for arranging the tastings :)

I don’t have an iPhone, but I’ve played around with ones owned by friends – they’re pretty cool. I have a standard flip phone, but will upgrade at some point.

I have a blackberry because my company pays for it, but my boyfriend has an iPhone, and I’m always saying I have “iPhone Envy!” I would totally get one if I could…they’re wonderful!

I thought a/b getting an Iphone, but all of my friends who have one have either A) cracked the glass screen (b/c of dropping it) or B) scratched it. The problem is that Apple won’t cover any damage done to the external b/c they know you dropped it:/ This made me too nervous!
I actually got the Verizon LG Voyager-it has a lot of the same features and a full keyboard! I <3 it!

I love my iPhone and I was not a big cell person before I got it. I always had the free phone that came with the plan! It’s awesomely convenient!!!! It has a gps app so I don’t get lost every time I get in the car. It’s easy to use and I haven’t had any problems with AT &T since getting it in July. I have to pay for texts, but because I have the Internet I jus email instead.

I had a blackberry for about a week & didn’t like it, so I switched to the iPhone when it first came out- I was so glad I did! iPhone is especially great for the google map app that allows you to search restaurants wherever you are going. My husband and I use it all the time on the road to find healthy fast food options- Jimmy Johns, Chipotle so we don’t have to do the greasy burger thing. I also love the LoseIt! app- it’s a food journal that automatically calculates how many calories you’ve eaten & calories burned through exercise. That app alone has helped me a ton when I’m away from home to track how many calories I’m eating.

I want an iPhone so badly! My outdated cell phone is just not cutting it anymore…sometimes it gets in bad moods and doesn’t even work! When my contract ends this christmas (so far away ahhhh!) I will hopefully get an iPhone.

The pug is adorable; teenage awkwardness or not :)

Thanks for the great review on the book. The RIM blackberry outsold the iPhone this past year I think 2 to 1 (trying to remember the article I read the other day) so it might be worth doing a side by side comparison to see the difference and which one would better suit your needs.

I bought an iPhone when my BlackBerry was on the Fritz in February. I was worried I wouldn’t get used to the screen, or the typing…but omgoodness I don’t know how I lived without it! I LOVE it. All of the things you can do with it outweigh the fact that it’s a bit harder to type on than a BBerry.

I loved my BBerry too, and they definitely had their perks, but I seriously do love my iPhone. It makes emailing/interneting sooo much easier!

Iphones look delightful to me. My phone is insanely outdated.

iPhone yes! I love it in Boston – no problem with service and it loads great. I had a blackberry before and websites loaded horribly. The only problem is that they typing is still a bit of a pain. I only do short emails or texts.

I think the iPhone is phooey. I have a blackberry that I hate. I don’t even know why I got it. Spending $100/month on a cell phone is nuts, especially when I have a laptop. I can’t wait to have a “regular” cellphone again!

I heard verizon is in talks with apple to come out with their own version of the iphone soon though so I’m waiting on that one.

I don’t know what to comment on first. The pug calendar is adorable. I think it’s disapointing though that that cookbook includes so many fake meats and cheeses. That is a big turnoff for me as well. I don’t mind it in the occasional recipe but to me it puts too much emphasis on meat and cheese as essential components of the meal. The best vegan meals I have had are the ones that don’t use any faux meats or cheeses at all.

I also have an iPhone and I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE, LOVE it. I was never a big phone person before I got it and always got whatever phone was free. However I have always been a long time apple user and MacBook, iPod, etc. lover. This phone has rocked my world and I feel lost without it. I use the pandora app as my radio in the car, I have my MacGourmet app to keep my recipes organized and accessible on the go, I use the map app as my GPS, tweet on it, read horoscopes when I’m bored, and use it a lot in general when I need to google when I am out. The interface is extremely handy and I love that whenever a phone number or e-mail address is mentioned in a search or on a website that all I have to do is click on it to call or email. It’s extremely handy when I’m running late to a dinner reservation and need to give them a call and let them know or when I’m out and need to find the closest ATM, starbucks, etc. I even use the Bank of America App for my banking on my phone which is so handy.

I’m so addicted that I am 99% sure my boyfriend will be getting one this summer when the new version is released.

Fake blondies sound intriguing. I am thinking about the iphone, but I don’t know if I would use it enough to justify the cost.

Your toasts look great, I love how you add pumpkin seeds and flaxseed on top, I’ll have to try that some time. I don’t have an Iphone but I have friends who have it and they’ve pretty much all complained about how it’s not as easy to use as a cell phone. However, our cell phones here in Sweden are quite different from the ones in the US. My cousin (who lives in the US) is always saying how cool and “high tech” my cell phone is, even though it’s nothing special at all and in fact an old model from several years ago. Haha… So I can’t really say if an Iphone would be considered better or more easily used than your cell phones in the US.

i want that cookbook so bad ugh!
i have an iphone and to be honest, at first i hated it. it gave me a lot of problems (wouldn’t send me text messages or would send duplicates instead of new ones, the screen wouldn’t come back after being on the phone, etc) and i contemplated taking it back and trying to get a new one. then all of a sudden the problems just stopped and now i love it! hahaha it was pretty weird. but now i don’t even know what i would do without it it’s so convenient

love that pug. ugh my roomie accidentally let my dog-a-day calendar fall in the toilet one day in february.. this post makes me long for another one, but by the time i looked for one all the calendar kiosks had closed. i don’t have an iphone, i have a blackberry.. i don’t know if i would do well with a touch screen. thanks for the review on the book, the more reviews i read the more i realize it is probably not a very complex recipe book but i am one who loves complexity so i prob wont buy it. thanks for the review!

Love it, had it since December 2007. Never carried it with a case and only November 2008 did a drop damage it (the screen is wonky, slight horizontal lines on it) I mean, I’ve dropped it in the toilet, beat it up pretty bad, it’s one tough cookie. Granted my next one will be cased, but I am a back pocket kind of girl (my jeans have worn around it like a dip can.) I am constantly using it for something. Weather, calendar, google reader, maps, games, grocery list (grocery IQ) facebook, pandora is awesome, Liza is right Portable MacBook! I’m waiting till the next generation to get a new one, but I’ll never get a different phone now that I have an Apple.

I just got an iPhone last week after resisting the temptation for a very long time. I’m happy that I did because it is amazing! There are so many different apps for it, and I love not having to carry my ipod and cell phone now when I go to the gym. It’s very convenient!

I love my iphone! I can’t imagine ever going back to a regular phone. I have a great app on it called Run Keeper, that uses the (2nd generation) phone’s GPS to track my mileage, time, and speed while I’m running. And I love that AT&T does rollover minutes – I can’t believe other carriers haven’t picked this up!

I LOVE the iphone. Here’s the only drawback – sometimes it freezes. Did this ever happen to your ipod? I’ve used an ipod for about 4 years and sometimes they freeze or freak out or don’t play or the other day it SAID there was music on it and nothing would play, and the album covers were all blank (This was on the nano, which I still use sometimes because it’s so tiny and easy to carry, or if traveling so I dont drain the iphone battery). So the iphone will occasionally do similar things. I’ve had it 4 months and have been on the apple site troubleshooting about 3-4 times for weird things it did. The RAZR verizon phone I had before just worked like a regular phone and never “freaked out.” That said, I still love the iphone. I just caution people that it sometimes does weird things.

I’m a day late, but I absolutely love my iPhone. I’m really not one for gadgets – I have a Dell laptop, an iPod shuffle to use while working out and a decent digital camera and it’s all I need. I never jumped on the bandwagon of fancy/smartphones until a year ago. A friend of mine had an iPod touch and after using it for a few hours, I was in love! When it was time to upgrade my phone, I debated between a Blackberry or an iPhone and I am so glad I went with it. They’re still working out some of the kinks (my apps freeze/won’t work from time to time) but overall it’s pretty solid. If you are considering getting one, I’d wait until the new version comes out sometime this year. But seriously, I can check my e-mail, take pictures, use GPS, find restaurant reviews, track my food/workouts, use a tip calculator, play games, read Google Reader and so much more on it. It’s my favorite thing ever, and I know that makes me sound kind of shallow.

I ate toast with almond butter + flax like you yesterday morning, and it was delicious! Thanks for the idea.
