Darwin’s Ltd.

April 24, 2009

What a find! Mal and I enjoyed the best sandwiches for lunch yesterday afternoon at Darwin’s Ltd., a unique, bohemian-chic sandwich shop, grocery store, and cafe all in one. Darwin’s sort of reminds me of something you would find in God’s country. :-D Darwin’s is located “off the beaten path” just past Harvard Square about a 7-10 minute walk down Mount Auburn Street. (I later found out that Darwin’s has a second location on Cambridge Street.)

Darwin’s was super busy at lunchtime! Holy moly is this place popular! Mal and I waited at least 20 minutes for our sandwiches, but it totally worth it!

In addition to selling amazing sandwiches, Darwin’s also has a grocery section, which includes fruit, veggies, and a number of regular grocery and gourmet products.

Darwin’s sandwiches are made-to-order and their menu offers a number of tasty sandwich combinations with delicious and interesting ingredients. If you can’t find something you like on the menu board, you can customize your own sandwich from their wide variety of freshly baked breads and ingredients.

One of the things that makes Darwin’s Ltd. special is that their sandwiches are named after the streets in the local neighborhood. Mal ordered “The Hilliard” sandwich with Smoked Turkey Breast, Dill Harvarti, Dijon Mustard, Lettuce and Tomato on a baguette, and on our walk back to Harvard Square, we saw the street sign for his sandwich. It was fun! :-D

I ordered “The Hubbard Park” sandwich with Hummus, Avocado, Apple, Carrots, Tomato, Sprouts & Honey Mustard on 7 grain bread. It was amazing! I loved the variety of ingredients and tastes, and the bread was soft and thick with firm, grainy crusts!

My sandwich was put together very well and the ingredients were so incredibly fresh and flavorful. You could tell that Darwin’s cares about the quality of their food and their customers’ satisfaction.

Mal and I tried to grab a table in the attached cafe, but it being lunchtime, we had no luck. Darwin’s was packed! We found a bench outside and ate our lunch there.

I’m so happy that I found Darwin’s! I love, love, love it! You’ll be hearing lots more about this place in the future!

Hi Tina-
I am a long time lurker and I had to comment because Darwin’s is my favorite sandwich shop in the world. I went to the Ed School 2006-2007 and I really miss Cambridge. The hubbard park is my favorite sandwich and I somehow managed to afford it even on my broke student budget! There is another Darwin’s right by Ringe and Latin that is usually less crowded- so you might want to check it out.

Darwin’s looks like my kind of place! The bread looks so delicious, I wish we had something like that in D.C.- we barely have any good, unique sandwich shops, sad.

Looks like a great place. That’s cool that you and Mal can meet up for lunch during the day. That’s the one thing I miss about when Bill and I both worked in the city.

I am a big fan of Darwin’s. The Hubbard is my favorite sandwich. These sandwiches are the closest I’ve found in Boston to the amazing sandwiches at College Town Bagels in Ithaca, NY where I went to college. CTB is still in a league of its own though. If ever in Ithaca, go there!

I feel like I’ve seen that place and never ventured in. I love when you showcase things becaus after traveling I start to feel uninspired with the Boston food scene until people remind me there are great places I have to try.

I always like finding places that make excellent to-order sandwiches, with great filling options. I’m so not a Subway/chain sandwich store kind of person, and I just can’t keep all the necessary ingredients in stock in my own fridge without them going bad on me.

I heard about this place from a friend, and she said good things, too! I’ll have to take a walk there for lunch one day. My office is so close! And their prices look great, too.
