Cool Things with Demetri Martin

April 10, 2009

Good morning and happy Friday! :-D I am off from work today, so I slept in, enjoyed a yummy breakfast, and now I am gearing-up for a 9 mile run. I have never run 9 miles in a row, so this run is going to be unchartered territory

This morning’s oatmeal was a lovely mix of wheat bran, ground flaxseed meal, vanilla hemp milk, banana, walnuts, and, of course, peanut butter. I finished off the PB jar this morning!

Approximate measurements:

  • 1/3 cup dry oats
  • 1/4 cup wheat bran
  • 2 tbsp ground flaxseed meal
  • 2/3 cup vanilla hemp milk
  • 1 banana
  • 1 tbsp chopped walnuts

Running fuel…

Demetri Martin

Demetri Martin’s show last night was, as expected, hysterical!! And I had 2 cool Demetri Martin things happen to me yesterday!

First Cool Thing:

Yesterday afternoon at work, I was super busy, but managed to slip out after lunch for an iced coffee. While walking around Harvard Square enjoying the sunshine, I do a double-take on this guy, who looks a lot like Demetri Martin, but I walk right by him. Then it occurs to me that it is totally possible that Demetri Martin is in Harvard Square because he has a few shows in Boston. I turn around and approach him.

Our conversation:

  • T: Excuse me, are you Demetri Martin?
  • D: Yes.
  • T: Hi, I’m Tina. (hand shake) I’m actually seeing your show tonight.
  • D: Yea, I got here early.
  • T: (I see that he is writing notes in a small notebook) Are you taking notes for the show tonight?
  • D: Yea, I’m trying to get some ideas.
  • T: Cool. Well, I will see you tonight.
  • D: See you tonight. Bye.

I was so nervous while talking to him, but I tried to act cool! ;-) For being such a funny guy, he was really mellow and laid-back. Maybe he didn’t expect anyone to recognize him in Harvard Square?

Second Cool Thing:

The second cool thing that happened was at the actual comedy show. Within 5 minutes of starting his performance, Demetri recaps our brief encounter in Harvard Square and that I said I would be at his show tonight!! Crazy, right? And then he says, “Is Tina here?“ Of course, I am surprised (and sort of embarrassed) and try to yell that I am at the show, but my voice didn’t carry at all and our seats were so far back that he didn’t hear me. Thinking that I was not at the show, he says, “She just made me look like a desperate psycho!” The whole thing was pretty hilarious, but I am curious what his joke could have been if he knew I was there! I feel like he would have come up with something really funny. Oh well. It was still an awesome experience and a fun story to tell!

As you can see, our seats were pretty far back. We were partway up the mezzanine level.

The man himself…

Ok, time to RUN

Question of the Day

I’m excited for your run for you!

When I was 13 I was at a party where Peter Gallagher was (pre-OC) and told him I was going to be an actress on Broadway when I grew up. He said, “Maybe one day we’ll work together.” And I told him we would, if he was lucky.

And then he made “Center Stage.” I’m just saying.

Wow!!!! That’s so awesome!!!

I almost met Chef Duff last week when he was lecturing at my school. I saw him walking around the student union, but I totally chickened out and didn’t say anything to him. So props!

Your 9 mine run has inspired me to go for a run today! Good luck!

I’ve seen David Duchovny a bunch of times at my favorite restaurant! I also said hello to Colin Mochrie one time when I ran into him at one of his shows!

Hahah that’s so great! He WOULD make a joke like that :)

I met a bunch of people from my favorite bands in high school but I was most psyched when I met author Chuck Klosterman a few summers ago (he writes for Esquire Magazine and has written some books on music and pop culture).

I was just walking through Times Square for my internship and listening to music and dancing. Then I thought to myself “Why am I such a weirdo? Who else is dancing on the street right now?” And then I look up and Chuck Klosterman is dancing to his headphones and walking right towards me!

I also let him pass me by but then I chased him down and talked to him. He actually just did a reading up in this book shop in MA where I go to school! He was awesome :)

Oh, I also met Chuck Palahniuk, the author of Fight Club a bunch of times!

That is so cool!

One time in New York I saw Ted Danson at MOMA, but everyone kind of stayed away from him. Also, Andie McDowell lives sort of near me and I’ve seen her at the airport, but I never talked to her, either! I;m shy! If I saw Eddie Vedder somewhere I’d introduce myself.

What a funny story!

My husband and I are huge fans of the band Oasis. We have always joked about what we would do if we ran into one of the band members on the street, assuming (of course) we’d play it cool. We went to Seattle to see them in concert, and at 7 a.m. on the way to breakfast, we saw one of the founding members, Noel Gallagher, coming out of a drugstore! It was 7 a.m., he looked like crap, and we kind of freaked out, with my husband screaming like a girl, “NOEL!!!” He looked up at up and looked freaked out. I, too, screamed like a girl and said “WE’RE COMING TO THE SHOW TONIGHT!!!!” to which he replied, “Oh. Yeah.” and walked away.

I wish I could say this happened, like, in college, but it was just last year and I’m 30 years old. Heh!

Ah! That’s awesome!! I wish he could have heard you in the audience!

Jack Black from the White Stripes came into the Starbucks I used to work at. I was actually going to the White Stripes show that night, but I was way too nervous to say anything to him. I just handed him his grande vanilla nonfat latte and said thanks. It was probably for the best, I can say some pretty embarrassing things when I’m nervous!!!

I sat next to Antonio Sabato Jr and his parents at a little Italian restaurant in Beverly Hills – but was too nervous to approach and just sort of creepily stared. Haha.

I bumped into Adam the winner of Average Joe at Saks in Manhattan at the counter.

And I just met Jon McLaughlin at the Border’s in my office where he did a performance. It was very similar to your encounter with Demetri!

Hi Tina! I’m new to your blog, but I love it (especially your love of oats!)

I actually got to meet Tim Gunn (from Project Runway – my favorite show!) my senior year of college. He came to due a mock up version of Project Runway with some designers from my school. One of my friends asked me to model one of her dresses, and while I was backstage before the show, I got about 20 minutes of one-on-one time with Mr. Gunn :) He was so nice, gave me his email address, took a picture with me, and signed something for my mom. Definitely the greatest day ever!

Oh my gosh – how funny! I just LOVE comedy shows…such a good time! I met Tiki Barber and his twin brother Rande within 2 weeks of each other, both on opposite ends of the country. Isn’t that strange??

That is so funny! good luck on your 9 miler – you will have no problem.

I went up and introduced myself to Kyle Boller (was QB for the Baltimore Ravens) – I thought he was cute and we were at this bar, so I had liquid courage. He asked if I was a ravens fan and I proceeded to tell him how I was a redskins fan and the conversation ended shortly after – oopsie. :)

once in high school, I met the band Yellowcard before their show. (I was a huge fan back then) As I’m talking to the lead singer, the first thing that comes out of my mouth is “wow, I really like your sweatshirt.”
Great. Im sure I made a fantastic impression! Like he really wants to be remembered for his Sweatshirt. haha. At least I managed to follow that up with a half way decent conversation after that.

That’s really funny – cool story!!

When I was in college, we saw Ben Affleck sitting with some friends at a coffee shop. As we walked past, I said, “I thought he was still in rehab.” Ugh, I’m sure he could hear me – I don’t know what I was thinking! I felt so bad! This was back in the J-Lo-ish days.

Good luck on your run – I’m sure you will do awesome!

Neat story – and fun question! I’ve never met anyone famous, but I had a lot of fun reading other’s responses.

I’ve seen oat bran all over the place, but can’t seem to find wheat bran. Where do you buy yours?

Enjoy the lovely Boston weather during you run!

On Monday, I met Bill Nye the Science Guy in the Newark airport! He was all disheveled because his flight was delayed for like 4 hours. His bow tie was all undone, etc…. I stalked him for a little bit before I convinced myself to go ask him for a picture. It’s posted on my blog. He was, how shall I put it, a bit socially awkward. But what else can you expect from a nerd-tastic scientist!

That’s so cool! When I lived in Tucson, AZ I worked in a popular Gourmet Sandwich shop. I waited on Nancy Reagen and Mr. Blackwell, critic to the stars. He criticized me because I had red hair(at the time) and was wearing a red shirt (required for work) saying that the two reds clashed and did nothing for my skin tone.
Nine miles is so awesome! Have a great day off!

i got to ask clinton kelly (from what not to wear) a question at a local event — not really ‘meeting’, though.

while up in williamstown during the theater festival (i went there for college & used to stay there summers to do nerdy lab stuff) i saw george clooney in a local bar. he was surrounded by other ladies, though. i also saw sara gilbert running a few times (she was in a play one summer).

oh, and i saw sheldon williams at target. that was cool.
