Strawberry Morning and Cheap Yoga Classes

March 18, 2009

Mmmmm… strawberries!

I love that strawberries remind me of summertime!

In the mix:

  • 1/2 cup dry oats
  • 1/2 cup vanilla hemp milk
  • 1 tbsp ground flaxseed meal
  • 1 tbsp hemp protein
  • Strawberries
  • 1 spoonful of canned pumpkin (I’m trying to use it up!)
  • 2 spoonfuls of Teddie PB
  • 1 handful of PB Puffins that I threw on top after I snapped my breakfast photos
Today’s bowl of oats included a really wonderful mix of ingredients this morning!

Fresh flowers are the best! They immediately brighten-up my day as soon as I see them. I should really start buying them more often.

Yoga Challenge: Day 18

For my yoga practice today, I did 20 minutes of Heart Opening Flow #1 by YogaDownload.com. It was great!! It had the perfect amount of challenge and flow, and a nice mix of easy, fun, and hard poses. It felt wonderful stretching my sore shoulders and chest, especially after Monday night’s 100 push-ups! My upper body feels so good now, I’m thinking about doing this session again tonight.

Snap Out of Unhealthy Eating Habits

I saw this little blurb in Self magazine this month:

Being a shutterbug could benefit your waistline. When people took pictures of everything they ate for five days, they reported consuming fewer snacks and being less likely to go back for seconds than during a week-long period in which they kept a written food diary, a study from the University of Wisconsin at Madison finds.

What do you guys think about this study? Is food blogging a healthy habit?

I think for many food blogging is a healthy habit. I wish I remembered to take pics of all my little nibbles throughout the day because maybe I’d knock those boredom, walking by it, grabs off.

I did the 20 minute lunar flow last night again. It was relaxing and stretched out my legs which I needed. I did very quick stretches following my run earlier in the day.

Hi Tina!

I’ve been following your blog for quite some time now — I’ll admit it, I’m a lurker! I just wanted to let you know I’ve started a blog of my own, please check it out! Now that I’m a lil bloggie, I’ll be sure to jump in to the conversation!

I love your bowl of goodness!Blogging can be a great motivator for weight loss if you want to keep track of your eats doing the day but for me it gets my creativity going in creating new meals.

Gorgeous flowers!

I find food blogging very helpful because it helps me keep track of how much I’m eating and is a reminder to eat healthy, balanced meals and snacks.

I think blogging is a healthy habit for sure. But not just documenting your food. I’ve gotten so many fabulous food ideas from reading blogs (oat bran, fage, etc.) I’ve tried quinoa for the firsts time and discovered a million ways to make my oats that I would never have thought of. It also makes me feel a bit accountable knowing I’m going to write down everything I eat and people are going to see it!

I bought some raspberries a few weeks ago and the the second they hit my tongue they tasted like summer to me! I can’t wait for berry season to come!

I’m not a food blogger myself, but read several daily. I do enjoy new receipes, meal ideas, etc. I also like when the food info is tied in to health/fitness commentary. On the other hand, I kind of agree with some of the articles out there recently about how the practice can exacerbate food “issues” people have and encourage disordered eating.

I wish I could find free yoga classes here! My gym does offer some, but they’re not until 8 pm and the gym is 40 minutes from our house, so I’ve only been doing yoga at home with the downloads or pose guides. Still good, though!

I saw that same thing in SELF – It definitely makes me think of what I’m taking that picture of!

My boyfriend would say that taking pictures of everything you eat is not healthy — but I believe he is wrong. You need to do what is best for you, and if taking pictures is what is best for you, go for it!

I think blogging can be a good habit unless you get obsessive about it and there are people who do.

Your breakfast and flowers look gorgeous!

I had strawberries in my oatmeal this morning, too! Definitely makes me want summer to come soon!

I think food blogging is a great accountability tool when used correctly. I definitely think…is what I’m about to eat a good representation of what a future dietitian should be eating?!

I had some awesome berry oats this am too :)
I think blogging has really helped me, I started off knowing I was a “grazer” but since I try to take a picture of EVERY bite, it’s helped me cut down. Never a bad thing when you’re trying to fit into a wedding gown!

Strawberries = summer :D

I think food blogging is a healthy habit for the most part. If people get too obsessed about it, like anything, it could be destructive. I know personally, I’ve been exposed to many more foods than I would have if I had not started blogging/reading.

You should check out my favorite studio, Open Doors, if you’re looking for relatively inexpensive yoga classes… they’re $8 for students and $12 for everyone else. I go to the Weymouth and Hanover locations, but they also have studios in Canton, Westwood, Easton, and a few other places. It sounds like the Weymouth one might be closest to you, though. I love the kitchen table decor, very modern! I think food blogging is a good way to get different ideas, and to become exposed to different cuisines and types of food!

Hey Tina!! Your oats looks so pretty this morning with the strawberries all lined up at the top with the PB :) So cute!

I think food blogging CAN be a healthy habit and great outlet for some people, but could also be a bit obsessive and a negative thing for others…depends on why you’re doing it! :)

Have a great Wednesday!

I think that for some bloggers it is a good habit and other it is not. My food blog is a good outlet for me while I go through the process of recovering from binge eating and compulsive overeating. I think it becomes a problem when you make food choices based on your blog and how others would percieve what you eat.

Mari March 18, 2009 at 10:43 am

I noticed that when I blog during the week, I eat so much healthier but on the weekends when I do not have internet access, my eating is more erratic…so for me blogging is definitely helpful esp when I see what others are eating; it inspires me =)

18th day of Yoga and I feel GREAT! last night I did sun salutations and a workout from March’s Yoga Journal Magazine and this morning I did 20 mins of Namaste Yoga….

Food bloggers make me HUNGRY – but that’s not a bad thing! :) I don’t have a food blog of my own, maybe I should start?

Reply

Sarah (Tales of Expansion) March 18, 2009 at 10:55 am

i read that in self, too! the main benefit of food blogging for me is that it forces me to slow down before i eat and consider the beauty of my food while i photograph it :-D . as a result, i end up eating more slowly and with much more appreciation! i have noticed, however, that food blogging does not inhibit my eat-what-i-want mentality — i’m never embarrassed to show my 3 slices of cake or anything like that …

Such pretty oats and flowers!! I know food blogging has helped me! It makes me aware of my consumption and makes me feel bad if I am thinking about losing control! In my head I know I’ll have to post all the food the next day and do not want to see that!

Reply

Hallie March 18, 2009 at 11:28 am

Those flowers are so pretty! Do they grow in Boston this time of year?

I see how food blogging can be great for accountability, but for me I could see it getting obsessive, like “I have to photograph those three M&Ms” or “I forgot to shoot those dried apricots, I’m such a fraud!” Of course, maybe then I’d think twice about eating the unplanned snacks, but at this point I don’t think photographing everything I eat is for me.

Reply

Danielle March 18, 2009 at 11:31 am

I definitely feel like food blogging has helped me more then I thought. I might not take pictures of everything depending on the setting but I always own up to eating it on the blog. It has helped me a great deal!

Food blogging has been healthy for me – I don’t do every single meal and snack, but the fact that I have a blog definitely has added a split second of thinking to myself “how would this look on the blog?” before eating. Sometimes it helps, sometimes not. :)

Cole March 18, 2009 at 11:42 am

Thanks for sharing these cheap yoga classes! I have one to add to the list that I’ve been thinking of trying out: Om City Yoga in Cambridge has a $5 beginner’s class on Saturday at 4PM- it sounds perfect for those who are completely new to yoga and are afraid to take classes.

Beautiful flowers!!!
I definitely think that taking pictures of your eats and food blogging can lead to healthy habits. I know I am sharing what I eat with the world, and it makes me more conscious of trying to make sure I get a good balance during my day so I can set a good example :) On a similar note, in one of my classes (I’m getting my MS in nutrition) we were talking about research and how the problem with food recalls is that most people don’t recall what they eat accurately, so some studies apparently have been instructing participants to photograph their food! This has been particularly useful when working with children and the elderly.

Marianne March 18, 2009 at 10:13 pm

Breakfast looks great!

And I think food blogging is healthy, as long as you keep it that way. I don’t mean you have to eat all healthy foods 24/7, but you have to make it work with your life and not take over your life. Someone had mentioned that it could become obsessive – chances are if it does, that may have something to do with your own personality or underlying issues than the actual act of blogging itself. I know I’ll grab a bite of something, and don’t feel guilty if I don’t get a photo of it. It’s just not practical to capture every single morsel!

Caroline March 19, 2009 at 12:44 am

I saw that same blurb in Self this month. I think food photography can definitely be an eye-opener for mindless eaters. The mere act of getting out the camera causes one to be more aware of what’s being consumed. However, I think there is a point of diminishing returns; it is only helpful up to a certain point. I do it for the mere enjoyment of it, as I think I am now a VERY conscious/mindful eater!
