I’ve decided to go back to my morning workouts. Since starting my new job with an earlier start time, I’ve been forcing afternoon/evening workouts (instead of waking up earlier), and it just isn’t working for me. I’m exhausted at the end of the day or the gym is so freakin’ crowded or something comes up to prevent me from exercising. Plus, looking back on past works (another reason to record workouts!), my best workouts are in the morning when I have energy and motivation. I’m naturally a morning person, so I find it easier and enjoy exercising first thing in the day. It just works for me and there is no reason to force a workout late in the day, especially if it’s not enjoyable. Guys, I’m making morning workouts work again!
So, I had a nice morning workout today: 30 minutes of free weight + 4.5 mile run. I’m saving my yoga for tonight, but feel free to comment on Yoga Day #13!
Yoga Challengers: We’re almost half way there! I have some surprises for you on Monday!
Breakfast
I’m getting good at this stovetop thing! Stovetop oats seriously blow my mind! HOW are they so delicious?!?
In the mix today:
- 1/3 cup dry oats
- 1/4 cup wheat berries
- 1/4 cup canned pumpkin
- 1 banana, sliced
- 1 tsp hemp protein
- 1 tbsp ground flaxseed meal
- 1 tbsp chopped walnuts
- 3/4 cup water
And, of course, two scoops of peanut butter! Peanut butter + oats are so amazing together! They need to be married like salt + pepper, peanut buttter + jelly, rice + beans, bread + butter, ketchup + mustard…
Lunch Preview
Today’s lunch is a homemade salad topped with baked cinnamon sweet potatoes. The other part of lunch is going to be a yummy cookie from High Rise Bakery, which, at 7:30 AM, I am already looking forward to! My afternoon snack will likely be an apple from my office snack stash. I’m keeping things light today because I am celebrating a friend’s 30th birthday by going out for happy hour, where I am sure that I will have a few beers and some bar food.

We switched places today! I skipped my morning workout AND yoga AND I’m out of wheatberries!!! But we did both have pumpkin oats!
Lovely looking salad
SWEET POTATOES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Fruits all the way! But can I add in a few sweet potatoes once in awhile:)
Oats look great. If all I had was apples and sweet potatoes…I’d be a happy camper!
I immediately thought fruit!!!! But then I started thinking about all the veggies I adore. It would be so hard to choose. I think maybe it would have to be fruit though! I eat probably about 4 serviings of fruit a day at least!
Fruit!!! I don’t know how I would go on without bananas.
Definately fruit! I love it all! Yumm!
I am loving this yoga challenge – not every day is as great as I envisioned, but I can tell I’m getting more flexible each time I do it, and I let myself relax into the posture more.
That’s a hard choice – fruits or veggies….I think veggies.
I actually have to limit myself on the amount of fruit I eat in a day because I realized my whole diet was turning into fruit, which was too much sugar and causing my face to break out like crazy! But if I had the choice between fruit and veggies I would definitely have Fruit be the main man in my life. I just LOVE fruit!
I asked my pastry chef sister about the whole stovetop vs. microwave oats thing… she said something about the stove heating and cooking the oats from the outside in, rather than the microwave that heats from the inside out. They get so creamy because the outsides cook first and then start dissolving into the liquid!
And that was your food science update for the day
I love fruit…but veggies are good for me!
I would TOTALLY pick fruit, I am addicted to all things fruit related. There isn’t a fruit that I won’t eat or try except Kiwi because I think I am allergic to it! I am the same as Meghann, I have to limit myself to how much fruit I can eat in a day because it has a too much sugar. But, it’s hard because it is soooo good!
I would have to pick veggies because my tummy sometimes doesn’t like all the sugar in fruit.
I would have to choose fruit even though I eventually would be on sugar overload and missing the veggies!
I agree with you about the oats. I don’t think I’ll EVER be able to go back to microwaving them again. I did the stove top thing with oat bran yesterday and it was also very good
And I’m like you, its not oatmeal without PB! Have a great day.
Yikes! I first thought fruit…but that would mean no more sweet potatoes, no more mashed potatoes, no more pumpkin pie!! I think I’d have to go veggies…
Please don’t make me choose!
Fruits!!! I’m not the biggest veggie person. Really only in the summer… or thanksgiving!
I would love to workout in the morning, but i have to be at work at 7:45! What time do you get up/start your workout? Do you go to the gym or workout at home? I’d like to figure out a way I could workout in the mornings because I definitely agree with you about feeling exhausted after work!!!
I wish I could say veggies but it’s got to be fruit! Going to check out your morning fruit post now! TGIF!
@katie s: I wake up at 5:01 and workout at home in our apartment’s gym. Once it gets warm, however, I’ll probably start going to the Harvard gym in the morning.
I would defintely pick veggies, I even surprised myself with that answer.
I looooove fruit- so that was my initial inclination….but veggies are so much more versitile. You can have them raw in a salad, roast up some root veggies, mash some sweet or regular potatoes. I think I’ma have to go with vegitables!
tough question though
) Best wishes on a great day!
I wish I would say veggies, but it’s gotta be FRUIT!
FRUIT, for sure. Veggies just don’t call my name like a nice, juicy apple or grapefruit does!
veggies hands down!! but i would seriously miss my daily banana. ALOT
fruit!
I would def. have to go with fruit, i think. Just because I think that it would be easier to NOT eat veggies than to not eat fruit. haha
Thanks for sharing about your morning work outs vs. evening. I never work out in the morning and I really just need to set my mind to at least giving it a try. I’m always so tired/something comes up in the evening!
What time do you wake up to make it to the gym/get ready/eat all before you have to be to work?
My choice would be fruits by far!
Yummy oats! I still have to try stovetop :/ I don’t know how/why I forget every time! I’d definitely go with fruits. I have more sweet desires than anything, and fruit is just so darn good! And it goes well with p.b.!
Hey everyone! I too love my morning workouts; I try to do atleast 45 mins-1 hour before I get ready for work. I must admit that it has been hard this week to get up since it has been so dark in the morning. If I have time in the afternoon, I either go to the gym or do something extra at home which has been Yoga for the past 13 days! lol….last night I got home and squeezed in 15 mins of my own routine…
DEFINATELY FRUIT!!!!!!! lol
So funny that the winner was a Kristie Lynn that is my name just spelled differently!!
Hoooray for making the decision to make morning workouts work for you again. I am really trying to make that work for me but since the time changed, I am having a heck of a time getting out of bed!
Congrats Kristie Lynn!! Enjoy your gift bag
I definitely work out my best in morning too…so unmotivated after work and classes and I feel so productive in the AM!
Fruits or veggies…what a tough one ahhh! I guess I’d hafta say I’d go with eating veggies for the rest of my life if I really had too…I feel like there’s more you can do with them!
Happy Friday Tina, enjoy your lunchtime cookie!
Michelle
Great Oats Tina! I think I would go with Fruit
FRUIT! I LOVE fruit so much, it is truly nature’s candy!
fruit all the way!
im a morning workouter too, if i dont do it in the am, its not getting worked out.
definitely veg. after a while fruit would be too sweet, although i would be sad for a life w/o fruit!
you and mal are cute too!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I go back and forth w/ the am/pm workouts. I guess it completely depends on what work out classes might look appealing vs. me just running on my own in the gym. That’s great that you know what works best for you!
I could not give up fruit. It is so wonderful. =)
Yum, sweet potatoes ON a salad. Brilliant.
I vote for veggies b/c so many veggies have protein/iron, which most fruits don’t. Although fruits are so much more delicious.
I choose FRUITS – Strawberries of course!
I just started morning workouts and I LOVE THEM! Therereally is nothing better!
Diana
I hear ya I am a morning exerciser too!!!
I would chose veggies hands down. Stir frys anyone?? I could live off of them!
oooo surprises cant wait!
Lunch looks amazing as always
I would definitely say veggies. More filling and versatile
I’m about to start a new project for work (next week) and I’m nervous about how I’ll work in workouts with my new schedule…glad to hear I’m not the only one struggling with this. I LOVE the idea of recording workouts…I think I’m going to have to start doing that, too, to keep myself on track. I’ve been keeping a food diary and noting the workouts in there, but it would be so much easier to see it all in one place…love it!
As for the question, I’d go with veggies…although I have a huge sweet tooth, too much sugar gives me a headache! lol
probably fruit – i have such a sweet tooth!
I love my veggies but I would definitely choose fruit! The oats look amazing!
I love pb on oats. You know what else is wonderful? Sprinkle some dark chocolate chips on there with the PB. They get all melty and delicious!
Fruits for me would have to be strawberries and blueberries…. hands down.
this question is like choosing between your children haha. okay, not really, but it’s hard. i would have to say fruit, just because that includes more things (tomatoes & avocadoes, for example!)
first, as far as yoga goes, the biggest surprise these past two weeks has been how incredible STRONG it’s making me. i knew i would be feeling more limber and flexible, but was not expecting muscle strength (silly me). i haven’t been doing any kind of weight training during my non-yoga workouts, but i have gain a ton of upper body strength in such a small amount of time through core and detox yoga, it’s amazing. i love it! i’m a total yoga convert and now understand why it’s considered a work out (i always thought it was simply relaxing, ya right!).
second, FRUIT! i need something sweet, and fruit is such a healthy “dessert”.
Fruits! I have too much of a sweet tooth.
fruit! i could never give it up!
I’ve been hooked on fruit since I was a wee little girl… Although I’ve grown into a love for veggies as well, fruit would be my pick!
Yeah I’d have to say fruit, although I too have to watch how much fruit I eat because I’ll eat it all day long and that’s too much sugar! Although, it would be sad to pick either one.
Since the time change I am having the HARDEST time getting myself into the early-workout schedule. I hate working out after work, but then again my BF doesn’t like how I’m tired by 9 when I exercise early…so neither is ideal! I’ve been easing back into it by waking up a little earlier each day for some yoga…maybe next week I’ll actually get in an AM run or gym sesh.
