Backtracking
After my breakfast post, I have a little blog backtracking to do. Basic Training ran late last night, so by the time I got showered, ready for bed, and settled, I didn’t have time to blog about my eats for the day. Plus, Mal poured me a small glass of wine and turned on How I Met Your Mother and that sounded a lot more enjoyable! I’m sure ya understand!
P.S. I did 112 push-ups at Basic Training last night! 12 on my toes, 100 on my knees! The push-ups were so much “easier” this week and I even did some on my toes! It’s funny what your mind can do! I never in a million years that thought I could do 100 push-ups, but once I did, cranking out 112, some of which were on my toes, wasn’t nearly as difficult. It was awesome!
Breakfast
This morning’s bowl of oats was a yummy mix: oats, raisins, ground flaxseed meal, fresh strawberries, cinnamon Puffins, and Milton Marketplace’s freshly ground almond butter, which is superb! (It’s not Barney Butter, but it’s still quite delicious!)
I needed an iced coffee to get going this morning!
My breakfast with a Women’s One-A-Day multivitamin and an Adora disk for some extra calcium and Vitamin D…
I have the ugliest lunch today: PB&J on whole wheat, a Pure Bar, and a banana. Oh well, I think it’ll still be a good lunch!
I’m excited to try the Pure Bar!
Dinner
Last night’s dinner was a quickie: Annie’s Mac & Cheese + steamed broccoli.
Mal and I wanted to get something in our stomachs before Basic Training, but we also didn’t want to be too full for our workout. We ate dinner early so that we had time to digest.
For dessert, I munched on a couple of medjool dates and a handful of chocolate and peanut butter chips (not pictured). I had a serious sweet tooth all day yesterday!
Lunch
Yesterday’s lunch was a repeat of Sunday evening’s chickpea patties + salad. The chickpea patties were excellent as leftovers. In yesterday’s salad: salad greens, grape tomatoes, celery, and chickpea patties.
Sweet treats: medjool dates, Quaker Simple Harvest All Natural bar (trail mix flavor), and a dark chocolate Adora disk.
My afternoon snack was an apple that I cored with my apple slicer!
I dipped my apple pieces in almond butter. SUCH a delicious combo!
Mid-afternoon, I ran a quick errand to CVS. I left the store with two toothbrushes, a bottle of conditioner, and a package of dark chocolate M&M’s. It’s funny how that happened? Out of control chocolate cravings! I was planning to eat half of the bag and saving half for later, but I ended up enjoying all of them over the course of the afternoon. Oh well. I’m pretty sure I burned off the calories at Basic Training!
Yoga Challenge: Day 24
I hope that you are still practicing! I!! skipped my yoga yesterday, but I am recommiting myself to the last week of the Challenge! Who’s with me? We’re in the homestretch and there are prizes at the end! (Check out the yoga prizes!) So, if you’re still yoga-ing or have taken a little break, I encourgage you to join back in for the final week. If you’ve ever practiced yoga in the past, I’m sure you know how enjoyable and beneficial it is for your mind, body, and soul!
If you’ve haven’t “recorded” your recent yoga practice, please do so on this post. I’ll catch-up tonight. Promise!
Question of the Day
What is something that have you accomplished (physically or mentally) that you didn’t think you could do?

VeggieGirl — March 24, 2009 @ 7:49 am
HELL YES FOR PUSH-UPS, PUFFINS, AND PURE BARS!!
**To answer your question = since I started strength-training 5 times per week with my trainer (started back in October), I’m now able to leg-press 160 pounds. Hell yes.
Stephanie — March 24, 2009 @ 8:04 am
Physically and mentall,y the Boston Marathon 3 times so far and onto number 4. 5 years ago, 3 miles was a lot to me!
tami — March 24, 2009 @ 8:07 am
when i ran my first half marathon, i really was surprised that i finished and with a pretty good time considering I had only ran 9 miles before then….my next challenge is running the full 26.2 either this FALL or next spring….
Shelby — March 24, 2009 @ 8:17 am
Do you ever notice a chalky texture to the Cinnamon Puffins!? I can’t get over it…even though I love cinnamon and I love puffins haha
Tyler (Raspberry Runner) — March 24, 2009 @ 8:21 am
apples and almond butter are the best! and i could eat my body weight in dark chocolate m&m’s….
physically: i completed my first olympic distance triathlon last year– 1 mile swim, 28 mile bike, and a 10k run….it took me 3 hours!
mentally: after making a C in general chemistry, i started studying a lot harder and made an A in organic chemistry the next year!
brandi — March 24, 2009 @ 8:24 am
i love those dark chocolate m&ms!
I ran my first ever 5K last year – I had never run at all before last year, so that was a huge accomplishment.
brandi — March 24, 2009 @ 8:25 am
Oh, and yoga! I forgot
I’m trying to get back into this week after a crazy week last week – my mom was in the hospital and it kind of threw me off. I have discovered that I like going to yoga classes much better than doing it on my own. It may be because I don’t have a good place in my house to do it or just that I like being around other people. Either way, still going well
Beadie @ What I Ate Yesterday — March 24, 2009 @ 8:36 am
Go you with the push ups!!
I never thought that I could enjoy lifting weights. Now, my husband and I do it together and we have alot of fun!
caitlin — March 24, 2009 @ 8:37 am
i think running my first half was a big mental AND physical challenge for me!

Mommyhood. When I was younger I never wanted to have kids. Then after getting married something in my brain changed and I wanted to be a mommy so badly. We only had to “try” for a few months before I was preggers. Now I can’t imagine my life without my little monkey. It is a tough job but sooooo worth it.
Catherine (FOOD SNOB) — March 24, 2009 @ 8:50 am
I think this yoga challenge was maybe something I never thought I could do! I expected to give up after the first week — but I’ve only skipped ONE day the entire month! I’m feeling stronger and more flexible than I did at the beginning, and I think I’ve enjoyed huge mental benefits that I haven’t quite realized. I’ve been under a LOT of stress lately, although it doesn’t seem to be affecting me as much as it could. I’m still sleeping well and not fixating on things to come . . . woo!
Rebecca P — March 24, 2009 @ 8:52 am
I never thought I could run a marathon and now I am training for my 3rd. It’s both mental and physical!
Maria — March 24, 2009 @ 9:00 am
I am working on my push ups too, I am doing them on the ball. I have never put almond butter in my cereal, I will have to try that one!
Betsy — March 24, 2009 @ 9:04 am
I recently ran my first 10K, which was a big accomplishment! It wasn’t that long ago that I ran my first 2 miles and nearly wheezed to death.
K — March 24, 2009 @ 9:12 am
Push ups on your toes?! That sounds intense – I’ll have to try that! Please let us know how you like that Pure bar! That’s the flavor I’m most interested in trying. Have a great Tuesday
Meg — March 24, 2009 @ 9:12 am
WOW! That is a lot of push-ups!
I have just started running and I never thought I would be able to do it. I am really starting to enjoy it.
Mara @ What's For Dinner? — March 24, 2009 @ 9:18 am
Great eats, and I’m so beyond impressed at your push ups!! I can only do about 4 or 5!
I never thought I’d be able to ever lose weight, and here I am, 45 lb lighter

Wow, this post is jam-packed with food fun! I love it!
I have been slacking on the yoga… but I have been doing moves here and there – just not for very long, so I haven’t commented. Throughout this month I’ve definitely realized that even a quick downward dog can really help me stretch out and relax in some way.
Sarah — March 24, 2009 @ 9:47 am
Definitely understand those chocolate cravings!
I never thought I’d be able to run over 2 miles at a time, but now I regularly run 4-11 miles!
Michelle Hisae — March 24, 2009 @ 9:49 am
I climbed Half Dome in Yosemite Valley with my Dad and a group of our friends. I’m afraid of heights, so this was VERY scary for me. But the hike was great – 16 miles roundtrip and we were beat by the time we got down the mountain. I would do the hike part again, but skip climbing up onto the dome. It’s a 45* angle cimb, 8,800 feet above the valley floor! I’m so proud I did it!
Danielle — March 24, 2009 @ 10:13 am
I can’t believe how many pushups you could do! That’s awesome!
I’m in no way a runner yet, but I’m surprised everytime I run at how much better I get every time, what a great feeling, and I never thought I could run at all.
Sarah — March 24, 2009 @ 10:30 am
Good morning ladies-
I’m in need of some moral support! Last night, I made a healthy dinner after a healthy run and a day of healthy eating (all normal for me), and then preceded to make a box of “lowfat” brownies and eat a quarter of the pan.
I’m feeling extremely “guilty” about this – I’m not trying to lose weight – my outlook is to just be consistent. however, I have a problem with this type of overeating after dinner. Before you even say it, it’s not because I deprive myself during the day – I def. don’t – or because i’m still hungry (i’m not). It’s mostly out of habit and/or boredom – i just love dessert! Many times, eating one ice cream bar or cookie just doesn’t satisfy me – the expereince of dessert is over too quickly. Hence my eating a quarter sheet of brownies last night.
Any advice on how to stop beating myself up / stop eating so much after dinner, without feeling deprived? Again, I am not trying to lose weight – just maintain a healthy lifestyle that makes me feel good about myself and makes my heart happy too.
Thanks!

Wow 100 push ups! I am working on them with the 30 Day Shred but I am not quite there yet! Yum I would have eaten the whole bag of M&Ms too!!
Anna — March 24, 2009 @ 10:58 am
100 pushups? I wouldn’t want to run into you in a dark alleyway… haha.
I never thought I’d be able to run a half-marathon, but it was really 60% mental, 40% physical.
coco — March 24, 2009 @ 11:08 am
apple slicer is so convenient! I need to get one too!
something I accomplished physically: head stand pose after one year of practicing yoga.
mental challenge: surviving the ph.d program.

My biggest accomplishment is doing push up son my toes! I’m currently up to 7 in a row. I am a little heavy in the chest area, and that’s always made it really difficult for me!
For yoga, I’ve been mixing power yoga and gentle hatha. Yesterday I did power yoga, and I was burning at the end, I think it was the compbo of yoga and snowboarding!
Sarah – I totally had your problem! I loved making boxes of low fat brownies (“No Pudge” was my favorite) and it was impossible to resist not eating every single piece with an edge, the crispy part was my favorite! I learned that I CANNOT buy those boxes, it’s just too tempting for me to keep in the house, so I DON’T do it. If you have to make it, immediately deliver some to neighbors, friends, or coworkers. Get rid of it ASAP! I like keeping not-so-tempting treats around, that I think are just “Ok” tasting, but won’t drive me crazy with WANT knowing that it’s in the cabinet waiting to be consumed!
I hope that helps!

I’m excited to read about your pure review…I haven’t tried them yet, but they are all over the food blog scene right now, so it’s only a matter of time. I’m still odwalla’s #1 fan though…
Sarah — March 24, 2009 @ 11:38 am
Hi Katie,
Thanks for the advice. I actually hardly ever make baked goods…they aren’t exactly my problem. My problem is more general – the need to have a “satisfying” dessert EVERY night. Two thin mints from my freezer or a skinny cow ice cream sandwhich don’t qualify
I need to figure out a way to have a single-serving, satisfying dessert every night that I can’t overdue. Many nights I have sugar free chocolate pudding that I make from the box and add bananas too, which is pretty satisfying and i usaully have under 200 calories worth, which is an accepetable dessert in my eyes. But lately…i’v been going crazy after dinner!
I appreciate the advice – come one, come all!

Hey when you were at the marketplace did you happen to notice a little breakfast place called a lighter fare? It’s right upstairs form there. I had no idea it was there until a woman I work with told me her daughter woks there! She said it’s pretty good, and judging by the name I’d say they have healthy options! I’m dying to try it out.

I’m glad to hear your patties worked well as leftovers. I bring my lunch to work everyday so pretty much everything I make for dinner has to also work as left overs.
I also love your end question. You’re so good at being inspirational. I would say snowboarding. I thought it would be something I could never be good at since I’m not a risk taker, afraid of heights, afraid of going fast, afraid of falling, etc. By sticking with it though and working hard I’ve actually gotten to a level where I love it and am considering getting my own board. Imagine if I had just given up!

Most challenging both mentally and physically for me would probably learning to ski!! I never learned as a kid and had SUCH a huge mental block against it. When I started dating my BF, it was very important to him that I at least TRY it since skiing is huge in his family. The 1st trip was so embarassing when they all dropped me off at ski school. I got over falling in front of them pretty quickly AND I now have a new favorite winter sport!
Mari — March 24, 2009 @ 2:30 pm
One thing that I accomplished physically was losing 80lbs on my own with nothing but hard work and eating right. Mentally I changed my way of thinking in regards to food…growing up we did not eat the healthiest things and till this day it is still an obstacle when I eat with the rest of my family. Oh and I also made it into “Self” magazine because of my weight loss =)
Yoga challenge is still going strong on my end =)
Christine — March 24, 2009 @ 2:32 pm
Sarah,
I have quite the bingeing problem myself, but thats a whole story unto itself. The only way I have been able to have my sweets after a meal (without eating the whole damn bag or box) is making a big batch of a baked good and freezing it. Then you take out a single portion out earlier in the day so its thawed by the time you want it. Like Katie, I can never bake something that that too yummy or I will eat it as soon as its made. If I make something sweet enough to get my cravings to shut up but not so good that I NEED to eat the entire batch, I’m dandy.
This actually ties into the mentally challenging thing that I didn’t think I could do: this summer I was able to eat a single piece of cake and then stop. My entire life just a single piece of dessert would send me into a junk food eating frenzy. Just eating that single piece is still hard for me (and sometimes I still fail and binge afterwards) but I am still proud of myself!!

Yoga Day 24: My yoga class was sort of canceled today so that we could work on our group midterm projects (lame). Instead, I did 30 minutes of Hip Opening Flow #2. After not doing yoga for a few days and starting back up last night, I can REALLY see the effects that it has had on my body. I love it!!!

I need to try those Pure bars! Your apple slicer totally looks like fun, and I love Mac ‘n Cheese with broccoli mixed in!
I never thought I could go from a size 26/28 to a size 6/8 just by sheer determination combined with exercise, healthy eating and a positive mindset. I’m still shocked whenever I look in the mirror… but the shock is a good one!
Meg — March 24, 2009 @ 5:28 pm
When I started running, I wanted to be able to run for 30 minutes. When I achieved that, I wanted to do 5K. Then 5K in under 30 minutes. And then run for an hour straight. I was so proud to accomplish so much when the first time I ran I only made it one minute before my shins hurt so bad I had to stop! I love looking back and seeing how far I’ve come!!
Maggie — March 24, 2009 @ 5:54 pm
Sarah,
I know how you feel. I struggle with the same thing! Katie mentioned “No Pudge” brownies… those are great, actually, because you don’t have to make the whole box… I used to only combine a little mix with yogurt and microwave it- they were warm and gooey and delicious. BUT, sometimes I would just go back for more anyways, so it’s not a foolproof solution. I have started to realize that the types of food I eat all day are causing my sugar cravings… so now I try to pay attention to the glycemic index and eat complex carbs and protein and in general and eat very little sugar, and it actually makes me want it less.

Oh, and those DC M&M’s are seriously addictive. The same thing happened to me at the airport (bought a pack and intended to eat half…oops).

On Monday, I went to a Yoga Works 1/2 class. This was my favorite class that I have taken. The instructor was a great mix of friendliness and knowledge, and his instruction did make me work. My favorite part of the class was the handstand prep; I feel so amazing when doing downward dog with my feet on the wall.
