Back from the Dead

March 20, 2009

I finally got sick. I never, ever, ever get sick! Honestly, I haven’t been sick in bed since high school! And, even now, I rarely get a cold. If I do, it lasts a day or two and it only happens once a winter or so. However, living with a teacher, who is always sick, I feel like a superheroimpervious to germs! This time, however, I actually got sick– I even had a fever! My body was worn down and susceptible to Mal’s gross high school germs. Meh. :-|

Last night, I slept for 16 hours straight and woke up feeling so much better this morning. I still have the sniffles, but I think I really just needed sleep. Hooray for sleep!!

Breakfast

I ate my morning bowl of oats around 11:45 AM. Eating breakfast at that time of the day is so weird for me. Usually, at 11:45, I am thinking about lunch.

Today’s oats were especially creamy and delicious! The banana slices and vanilla hemp milk added a whipped texture to them. In the mix: oats, wheat berries, banana, raisins, vanilla hemp milk, and two spoonfuls of peanut butter (not pictured). Man, this was SUCH a good batch!

With iced coffee…

Thursday Recap

I took some photos yesterday, so I figured I might as well include them in today’s post. I didn’t want all of that hard work to go to waste! ;-) (I didn’t photograph dinner– I was too sick for food blogging.)

Yesterday’s lunch was a homemade strawberry salad. Fruit in salads is so fun! It instantly livens-up a regular, old salad! :-D

In the mix:

  • arugula
  • strawberries
  • grape tomatoes
  • carrots
  • wheat berries
  • mozzarella

Lunch also included an orange,…

…a thick piece of bread, and a Quaker Simple Harvest All Natural bar.

Housing Day

Thursday morning in the Yard was so fun! It was Housing Day at Harvard. On Housing Day, freshman find out which of the 12 upperclass Houses they are assigned to for their remaining three years.

Bright and early on Thursday morning, the upperclassmen stormed the Yard to show their House spirit and wake-up the freshman. The upperclassmen show their House spirit in a variety of ways– from running through the Yard with banners and chatting their House name to dressing in House t-shirts and even mascot costumes. (There are many pre- and post-activities that revolve around Housing Day, too!)

I absolutely loved the Housing Day spectacle in the Yard yesterday morning! It reminded me so much of my own college shenanigans! ;-) Working for a college definitely keeps you young at heart

Exercising When Sick

Now that I am feeling better, I am debating whether to exercise or not. I don’t have a fever anymore, but I’m still feeling a tad sluggish… maybe a workout will energize me? I’m not a doctor, but here are my thoughts on exercising when sick:

  • I use the “above the neck check” to determine if I am well enough to exercise. For instance, if my symptoms are all above the neck, like a runny nose or a sore throat, then I think I’m okay to exercise. In my opinion, exercise can often help you feel better. I listen to my body and lessen the intensity of the workout, if needed. For example, some gentle yoga can increase your body’s circulation and help combat that rundown, yucky feeling, and an easy jog can unclog your sinuses and rev-up your energy. But, of course, this is totally a personal decision. If I’m too stuffed-up or just plain exhausted, exercise might make me miserable, so in that case, I don’t exercise!
  • On the other hand, if I have symptoms below the neck, such as body chills, aches, stomach “issues,” then I take it easy until I’m feeling better. And, if I’m running a fever, I definitely put off exercising until my temperature is back to normal.
  • If I exercise in a public place (like a gym) while I am sick, I try to consider my fellow exercisers. If I’m contagious and I can’t get through 10 minutes of my workout without coughing or sneezing, I stay home and rest. I don’t want to pass on my sickness to other people.

Hope you feel better! I always feel conflicted about whether or not to exercise when sick. If I have a cold, I usually go about my normal routine, but lessen the intensity/duration of my runs and monitor how I’m feeling…or I just do a good, longer session of yoga or Pilates. If I have a fever, I know that my body is trying to tell me that I just need to rest and focus on getting well!

Oh my gosh feel better! I really like your Neck Check idea- so true, I just never thought of it that way. Take care!

Thanks for the tips about exercising when sick. What always gets me is what to do when you’re sick above the neck only, but also really, really run down. I’m never sure if I should just take a day to rest, or try to do something, however low-intensity. I guess it boils down to personal choice!

Feel better soon :)

Tina, I hope you feel better…If you really feel like you want to exercise, try to do something low impact =)

And I agree with you, I also workout when I have a cold and I usually feel better the next day.

FEEL BETTER!

Glad you are feeling better, I often get cocky about not getting sick and then it strikes!
Your oats are so delicious looking, did you do any special cooking technique to make them so creamy?

Oh no, I’m sorry to hear you’re sick! : ( Your pictures look beautiful though, I aspire to have the pictures on my blog one day resemble how professional and perfect yours look.

I exercise when I’m sick, unless it’s below the neck or I’m feeling run down. I’ve actually read that it strengthens your immune system to continue exercise when you’re sick as long as it’s not too high-impact.

Feel better!

Ohmygosh- I am totally with you! I also “never” get sick- like I haven’t had a cold in years! And now yesterday I came down with a cold and it sucks- the cold itself isn’t that bad, but admitting that I have one sucks! Your post made me laugh, but I do hope you feel better and are back on your feet soon!

Hope you feel better soon! Glad you got so much rest. That should help, for sure.

Housing Day looks like a blast. I miss college.

I think I’m one of the very few people that doesn’t like fruit on their salad. I’ve tried it and it just creeps me out a little. I also dislike fruit & meat together in any combination.

I was feeling sick a little over a week ago- just so happens that day I read in a fitness magazine about not exercising when you are sick- it will only take your body longer to recover. If you still fell like you need/should/want to do something, a nice paced walk ( maybe in the sun?) would be fine!
Glad you’re feeling better today! And Harvard’s housing day looks fun! What a college experiencing!

Glad you got such a good sleep!!

The wheat berries in your oats look SOOOO good. I need to get some and try them in mine!!

How do you make your iced coffee?

Reply

Tina March 20, 2009 at 4:06 pm

@Erin: The banana slices, hemp milk, and lots of stirring add to the creaminess!

Reply

Tina March 20, 2009 at 4:07 pm

@coco: Nope, same old camera, but more sunlight. Good lighting makes all the difference, especially when photographing food.

Hope you feel better soon! Glad to hear that you take a step back and really assess how you feel before going to the gym. The other night at yoga, a man in my class had a cold and could NOT stop sniffling. He obviously wasn’t feeling well and couldn’t hold any of the poses either. And THEN he coughed the whole way through meditation. Not so relaxing!!

I have the same workout rules as you, my body always lets me know what to do. I especially agree that going for a run can help the sniffles instead of making them worse. And those oats DO look great! Yum!
