Busy Saturday and Oat-gurt
Happy Saturday, blog friends!
I’ve got a busy day ahead of me!
Saturday Agenda:
- Clean apartment/organize my life/blog stuff
- Wedding hair trial with my sister
- Much-needed haircut downtown
- Special event!
- Out on the town for a friend’s birthday
Breakfast
Breakfast was a “kitchen experiment” of sorts. I combined oats and yogurt to make a very, very filling bowl of “oat-gurt.” At first, I thought the yogurt would give the oats a weird consistency, but once I mixed it around for a little while, my “oat-gurt” ended up nice and creamy. I used vanilla-flavored yogurt in my oats this morning, which gave them a subtle sweet flavor. I’m curious to try this “oat-gurt” mixture with fruit-flavored yogurt!

How to:
- Combine 1/2 cup dry oats with 1/4 cup water in a large bowl; cook in microwave for 60 seconds; remove from microwave and stir well.
- Combine 6 ounces of yogurt to cooked oats; stir well and cook for another 60 seconds in the microwave.
- Remove bowl from microwave, stir, and enjoy!
To my “oat-gurt,” I added a delicious scoop of Barney Butter. Tragically, I am all out of BB now!
I really wanted a nice, big cup of coffee with my oats this morning, but since we are completely out of food, including milk, I opted for a mug of Earl Grey tea with a little agave nectar. Surprisingly, I like Earl Grey tea quite a lot!

NIH study: Calories, not content, determine weight loss
A National Institutes of Health study “goes against the idea that certain foods are the key to weight loss,” the lead researcher said. The study looked at four different diets and found that calorie intake was what mattered, not protein, fat or carbohydrate ratios.

What happens if you boil pasta in less water?
Cooking pasta in less water cuts energy usage and does not harm the final product, as long as you stir while cooking. As another benefit, the resulting pasta water is thick and flavorful, almost a sauce in itself.

cant wait for the yoga challenge to start!
Hey tina, i’ve made yo-oats before, or oatgurt (love that one!), and i found that if i cooked the yogurt in the microwave, it got a little sour and off! May i suggest adding the yogurt to the oats AFTER they are done finishing?

I’ve tried yogurt in oatmeal (chobani) and it didn’t turn out so well – was yours greek or non-greek?

Interesting oat combo! Have a great morning!

Trader Joe’s makes really good Earl Grey tea. It’s so stong it wakes you up like coffee but for me, I don’t get as jittery.
Did anyone else think, “um…duh?” when they heard about the NIH study? I thought we knew this already? I guess this is yet another study to quiet those who do fad diets or say you can’t eat certain things if you’re trying to lose weight (peanut butter!), but still.

WOW you do have a busy day! Good luck with that – I am liking the OAT-GURT!

I love yogurt in oats. However, usually when I do it it’s more like a cold swiss oatmeal. I’ll soak my oats in the fridge overnight in a little milk and then combine with vanilla yogurt, fruit, and nuts in the morning. I first tried it at a Corner Bakery restaurant in Chicago and now am addicted.

Good luck with your to do list!!
I am so excited about the 31 day yoga challenge! My mat is ready!!
on Feb 28th, 2009 at 1:17 pm
hallie, i totally agree with you.
it’s been proven many times over that calories are all that matter when it comes to weight. it only gets complicated when we consider a) if people cut out certain foods/food groups, they will only crave them more, which goes along with b) if people try to eat too little by unhealthy dieting, they will almost inevitably fail, c) living on a lot of processed foods vs. whole grains/fruits will have the same effect on wt. if the same number of calories are consumed, but the whole grain/fruit diet will be much more filling and thus, easier to stick to, d) people have to get over the idea of programs that seem successful (ex. atkins), and realize that this only works (short-term) because how much meat and cheese can you eat before getting totally sick of it (see a!).
i’ll get off my soapbox here
on Feb 28th, 2009 at 2:14 pm
can’t wait to hit the mat!

on Feb 28th, 2009 at 10:38 pm
I’ll have to try adding yogurt to oatmeal!
on Mar 1st, 2009 at 1:03 am
I think its just fun to say “oat-gurt” though it kind of sounds like a bodily ailment. I always underestimate Earl too, and then I think, “Aw, Earl, I’m sorry. I should invite you over more often.”

Ooh! The possibilities are endless with different flavored yogurts!

I have always thought about doing this with yogurt and oats… but didn’t want to ruin a breakfast in case it wasn’t good!! Glad to see I can try it without fear now
on Mar 5th, 2009 at 4:43 pm
Have you tried cold oats and yogurt? In the summer, I stir up a cup of yogurt (greek, regular, plain, flavored — whatever) with 1/2 cup dry old fashioned oats and 1 cup or so of frozen fruit. Let it sit overnight and in the morning it is FANTASTIC!
