Last week, we had a couple of nice-ish days in Cambridge, so during my lunch break, I ventured out into Harvard Square to explore my new surroundings. On my walk, I stumbled upon this cute sign:
Then, set back from the main road, I saw this:
I was very intrigued by what I saw, so I popped into Hi-Rise Bread Bakery* to check it out.
When I walked in the door of Hi-Rise, these two signs immediately caught my attention. One advertised yummy-sounding and interesting flavored soups; the other promoted an environmentally-friendly practice. Both of these signs made me want to find out more about this little bakery.

Inside, the bakery was cozy and quint with a small counter and display case. (I later discovered seating for patrons upstairs.) The menu offered soups, sandwiches, quiches, and all kinds of scrumptious-looking baked goods.
Holy yum!
After a little indecision (and a lot of drooling), I decided on the Oatmeal Coconut Pecan cookie, which ended up being an excellent choice. I even changed my status on Facebook to honor this amazing cookie!
Check out the whole pecans baked right into the cookie!
The Oatmeal Coconut Pecac cookie was firm, but at the same time, soooo incredibly soft, almost muffin-like, on the inside. Pieces of shredded coconut pervaded the inside of the cookie. Mmmmm!
* My boss informed me that the Hi-Rise location near Harvard Square is actually the satellite location, which is much smaller. The main Hi-Rise Bread Bakery is in Huron Village.

That cookie looks incredible, although I must say the Chocolate Walnut is calling out my name!
Soooo much deliciousness!!
I LOVE finding hidden little gems like that. They always have the best assortment of backed goods.
Those cookies are HUGE! But bigger is always better when it comes to baked goods.
How fun!!!
They are famous for their vanilla bean pound cake (Amanda Hesser from the New York Times published their recipe in her book Cooking for Mr. Latte (which is a great read). You should try it and report back!

Kaneil, balanceisbest
Have you ever tried Pinocchio’s pizza (locals call it “Noch’s”), close to Kirkland house? Your post about the dining hall the other day made me think about it. Maybe it’s mostly nostalgia since that was my pizza of choice in college, but I absolutely love their Sicilian spinach pizza (I know lots of people who love the tomato basil too). It’s a nothing fancy, but it’s a great inexpensive place to try if you’re in the neighborhood.
that sounds So special! i love how you incorporate they wonderful treats, tina!

That place looks awesome!
A true diamond in the rough!
Can I ask – do you ever get embarrassed to take photos at places like this? I always feel funny and would like to get over that fear.

Oh, I’m so jealous! Those cookies look amazing!
man, i hate that we don’t have any cute litte places like that in TX! at least not around me… that bakery looks so cute and worth a re-visit
The first time I went to Hi-Rise I also got the oatmeal pecan cookie! It is cookie heaven, I loved it! They also make an amazing lemon pound cake and their lentil soup isn’t half bad
wowwwww what a cool bakery!
Great find! That place looks so cute. I love the signs.
@Rose: Yes and no. It depends on the place and my mood. Sometimes, people will give me really weird looks, but I just try to act “cool.” Occasionally, people will ask my why I am taking photos, but they are usually intrigued by my food blog response– it’s usually a conversation starter.
Yum yum! Now I totally want a cookie. How fun to stumble upon such a cute little joint. Serendipitous in fact!
When we lived in Cambridge, we drove past the Hi Rise all the time, but never stopped in… maybe it’s time to!
This is totally a place that I would be interested in eating lunch at! So cute!
What a great bakery!!!
hi-rise looks so cute- what a great find!
Haha before I even read which cookie you had selected, I thought, “ooh oatmeal coconut pecan!!” Good choice:)

what an adorable little bakery/restaurant. you seem to always find cute places like this! yum.
I wish I was closer to Cambridge. I’d give just about anything for one of those almond macaroon cookies I saw. Yummy!
As soon as I saw that cookie in the pic with the display case, I knew that I would totally pic it too. I’ve made a coconut pecan blondie that is most excellent, so I can only imagine it would be awesome with oatmeal in a cookie
I work in Harvard Square, too, so I’ll have to visit this place sometime soon!
OMG, Tina, I’m drooling over those cookies. Must try them asap!!!
I worked for Hi-Rise a few years ago. Let’s just say that those cookies went straight to my hips.
