The Squealing Pig

January 13, 2009

Yay!!! The Geek Squad just called to tell me that my camera is ready to be picked up! I hope it’s as good as new! This means that you will no longer be subjected to grainy, lackluster photos, such as the ones from today’s lunch post.

Two of my coworkers and I went out for lunch today to celebrate a birthday as well as my final week on the job. The Squealing Pig is right across the street from where I currently work, so it’s a common place for students and staff to gather during lunch or after work. I’ve visited many, many times over the years, so the “Pig” brings back great memories for me, and it was the perfect place to celebrate today.

Decor

The decor inside the Pig is rather interesting– a mishmash of styles, but relaxed and cozy. It feels like a mix between a pub and a BBQ joint.

Inside you will find well-worn, chunky furniture, an old wooden floor and ceiling, low lighting, bold colors, and brick walls. The main room of the Pig includes a good-sized bar with tables and chairs in the middle for dining. To the right is an open kitchen; to the left is a smaller room with a working fireplace and more seating. An eclectic mix of artwork covers the walls and tiny strings of lights line the ceilings.

Food

The menu at The Squealing Pig is varied with soups and salads, toasted sandwiches, pizza, burgers, and  traditional entrees. The pizzas on the menu sound especially delicious with their somewhat usual toppings, including leeks, squash, goat cheese, arugula, brie, and figs, but sadly, the pizzas are only served during the dinner hours.

I was bummed about the pizza (I was really looking forward to the Leek & Squash one!), but I selected the toasted Prosciutto, Fig Jam, and Gorgonzola sandwich instead.

My sandwich was served with the most amazing potato salad, which coming from me, means a lot! In general, I do not like potato salad at all, especially when it comes to restaurant and store-bought potato salad.

My potato salad gripes:

  • Too much mayo
  • Flavor always seems “off”
  • Potatoes end up being too soft and mushy
  • Texture just grosses me out

Ok, well, I hope that clears-up how I feel about potato salad!

Anyway, the potato salad at the Pig was awesome! It was made with red potatoes, red onions, scallions, and a tangy and assertive whole-grain mustard dressing. Yum! I ate every last bite of it!

My Prosciutto, Fig Jam, and Gorgonzola sandwich was tasty, but nothing to write home about. I loved the combo of fig jam, Gorgonzola, and grainy bread, but the prosciutto was thick and rubbery. I prefer my prosciutto thin sliced!

After filling up on potato salad, I ended up saving half of my sandwich for a snack later this afternoon. I’m already thinking about digging into it! ;-)

When the check arrived at the end of the meal, we were pleasantly surprised with three Ferrero Rocher Chocolates. Mmmm… my favorite! What a perfect way to end a leisurely lunch!

Beer

While I didn’t have a brew with lunch, the beer list at The Squealing Pig is also worth noting as it goes well beyond the typical offerings. The “Master Beer List” included a variety of microbrewed beers, domestic and international brews, Belgian ales, stouts, and more. My coworkers and I decided to go back later this week for Happy Hour to try some of the Pig’s beers firsthand!

That potato salad sounds mighty good, and probably something you recreate at home.

Random, but I keep getting calls on my cell phone from Geek Squad that my order is ready… and I’ve never ever contacted them. Whoever they’re trying to reach is probably nice and frustrated!

They end the meal with Ferrero Rochers? Now THAT’s a quality restaurant.

YAY for camera repairs! I never thought your old cam pics were THAT bad anyway though haha

that potato salad does sound yummy. I like german potato salads over the mayo-based kind. The sandwich sounds pretty good too. And I love anything at all with gorgonzola or bleu cheese. *sigh* :)

**Just as a heads up: I will not be able to comment on blogs as often now, during this semester, due to work overload (I’m stressed already) – PLEASE know that I’m still loyally reading, but just won’t have time to comment. I hope you understand!!

A restaurant that ends the meal with Ferero Roche? Amazing!

I’m definitely more of a fan of the mustard potato salad rather then mayo (blech). Fig jam sounds really good!! I’ll have to keep my eye out for that.

I am normally not a fan of creamy potato salad. But mustard certainly looks amazing!

What a fun place!

I am SO with you on the potato salad. You couldn’t pay me enough to eat that crap that they sell by the pound in the supermarket. Ugh, my stomach is queasy just thinking about it!

I also am REALLY particular about potato salad. I’ve been known to like the mayonnaise kind on occasion (I really like mayonnaise!) but it’s hard to find a really good potato salad. What you had at lunch sounds really good! Here’s a recipe my mom invented that is TO DIE FOR and that I can’t stop eating when we make it:

Ingredients–small summer potatoes (red and/or white), scallions, sundried tomatoes, black oil-cured olives, arugula, vinaigrette (described below)
Method: First make vinaigrette: 1 T dijon mustard, 1 t sugar, 2 cloves garlic mashed up, pinch of herbs of choice (like herbes de provence or dried basil&rosemary) — mix together, then add 2 T lemon juice and 2 T balsamic vinegar (or any mix of vinegars) then whisk in 1/2 cup of olive oil.
Boil the potatoes, then cut into 1/4ths. Pour some of the dressing over them while they’re warm so it is absorbed. Add some of the arugula so that it wilts a bit. Slice the scallions (a bunch, or whatever you want), slice up the sundried tomatoes, add them and add as many olives as seems reasonable. Then add the rest of the vinaigrette and maybe some more arugula if you want. Refrigerate or serve at room temperature!
Seriously this is TO DIE FOR and also I just gave away my top secret family vinaigrette recipe! It’s the best.

I feel the same exact way about potato salad, but the one you had for lunch looks really yummy! I will have to try a mustard based dressing, I love mustard, seriously, I have 4 different types in my fridge right now…

you are so right about potato salad! I have never been satisfied with any potato salad that wasn’t homemade…i’ve tried it at so many different places, but true potato salad flavor just isn’t there.

For a second I thought the sandwich was just toast and was about to cry out in horror over such a “huge” lunch…luckily there was some meat in there…whew.
