The Long-Awaited Annoucement

January 5, 2009

Let me start off by apologizing for being such an announcement tease. I honestly had no intention of dragging out this announcement as long as I did. Let me explain what happened…

Two weeks ago (right before Christmas), Mal and I spent the evening celebrating with artichoke dip and wine (I am NOT pregnant!). Earlier that day, I found out some “informal” information that I was very excited about, but it was not yet formally confirmed. Mal and I decided to celebrate the good news anyway, thinking that I would hear back about the “formal” information the next day. However, the next day came and went with no news… as well as the weekend and the following Monday. I finally received the formal offer on Tuesday afternoon, but with the craziness of Christmas, I figured it would be best to tell you guys once everything settled down and once it was truly “official,” which is why I didn’t say anything about it last week either. And I was hoping you guys would just forget about it! Just kidding!! Soooooo, WHAT is the announcement!?!?

I have a new full-time job!!!

After the whole personal trainer fiasco, I did A LOT of soul searching and thinking about what in life is most important to me. What first came to mind was balance, especially when it comes to a work-life balance. I work 35 hours a week + about 10 hours of commuting, which leaves me with a decent amount of free time to do the things that I enjoy. However, when I considered what I spend 35 hours a week doing, it didn’t knock my socks off. I like my current position, but I don’t love it… plus the commute is killing me! I decided that I wanted a full-time job (still at Harvard) that makes use of my skills and challenges me each and every day, but also allows me to enjoy my outside interests (blogging, fitness, family, friends, etc.).

So, long story short, I applied for a position at Harvard, went on a first and second round of interviews, and was offered the position. It actually happened very fast! My new position is working for the Dean of Harvard College! It’s actually a pretty fancy-schmancy and high profile position! No wearing jeans to work anymore! I am very excited about this new opportunity as well as the shorter commute (about 35-45 minutes)! I obviously need a change of pace, so I hope this position will be both interesting and challenging for me. It definitely doesn’t sound like a boring job! :)

A new job, however, means no blogging at work. I know, very sad! I need to focus on learning my new job and what is required of me, and the blog can be a big distraction. My plan is to continue to blog before and after work, but my usual mid-day post will likely get nixed. I’m not sure if I am going to combine it with the dinner post or cut it all together. I need to feel out my new position before I start whipping out my camera at lunch to snap photos! :) No matter what I decide, I hope you guys will bear with me and continue to read Carrots ‘N’ Cake!

Good for you Tina! I have to admit, I was hoping you’d be bouncing around the NU Campus ;) . I have a few friends that work for Harvard (main campus) and love it! And nothing is better than having a shorter commute!

Also, I have owned a Vitamix for more than four years but it took you publishing their hummus recipe for me to get off my butt and use it. I just had some homemade hummus for lunch, mmmmm.

Congratulations! That is so exciting! Way to do this for yourself; you made the right decision!

No worries about the mid-day blogging – that is perfectly understandable!

good going Tina! I am so proud of you that you have figured all this out and made it work for you. I was just talking to Dave (he works at Plymoth State University) and I was wondering what job you did there at Havard. Best wishes for a smooth transition. (you could also post date your lunches from the day before if you can sneak pictures) but i think we all understand. hooray for a shorter commute!

Re: The job!

From what I understand, it is an Executive Assistant position, but because the Dean is relatively new to her position, it sounds like the role is ever-evolving! In addition to the assistant role, I will be taking on A LOT more in the form of projects, event planning, receptions, and other activities/tasks for the Dean’s Office. I’m very excited to try some new things!

I start Tuesday, January 20th!

@BethT: Harvard is made up of MANY different schools (15, I think)… all with their own agendas! Harvard College is the undergraduate school located in Cambridge.

CONGRATS!! that sounds awesome, and I’m sure you’ll be fantastic at it! i need to stop blogging at work to… oops, after this :) A shorter commute is key, although bummer I won’t get to hear about things around here in Longwood! Maybe it’ll get me to explore “up there” (beside for running on that side of the Charles, I haven’t explored yet…)

Best of luck.
