Photography Woes

January 6, 2009

I really miss my poor, broken camera. :-? I received an email message from the Geek Squad last night saying that my camera has been “checked in.” Let’s hope whatever the problem is that it can be fixed! I miss the little guy!

My old “stand-in” camera is just not cutting it!! Look at these lunch photos! Horrible, I tell ya! How embarrassing for the blog!

Today’s lunch:

And, because I feel bad about the yucky quality of my food photos, I leave you with a gorgeous shot of Cauliflower Gratin with Goat Cheese Topping from yesterday’s New York Times. Enjoy!

Cauliflower

  • Cauliflower is at its peak now, from December through March, when produce markets often are otherwise spare, particularly if you happen to live in a northern climate.
  • Cauliflower is an abundant source of phytonutrients and enzymes that may help neutralize toxins damaging to the body’s cells. It’s an excellent source of vitamins C and K, folate and dietary fiber, and a very good source of vitamins B5 and B6, tryptophan, omega-3 fatty acids and manganese.
  • In addition to the familiar white variety, cauliflower now can be found in farmers’ markets and many supermarkets in gorgeous purples, pale oranges and light greens. All the varieties taste alike, so feel free to use them interchangeably in this recipes.

P.S. This recipe sounds amazing!!!

Do you like cauliflower? I do, but I don’t eat it that often… although this recipe might be in my near future!

Sorry about the camera. Mark used to be a member of the Geek Squad at Best Buy!

I love cauliflower and try to eat it whenever it’s around! There is a good califlower at the whole foods bar called Sicilian cauliflower. Mmmm.

I like cooked cauliflower but I never know how to make it as part of a meal. We eat the red lentil-cauliflower curry from Veganomicon quite often. Brent loves it.

I know how you feel, my camera is currently being repaires as well and I am relying on my Mom’s not so great camera. If anything this camera is really making me appreciate all that mine can do.

Sorry about the camera. :) I do love cauliflower. I tried this recipe once for cauliflower couscous. You pulse the cauliflower in your food processor, and it takes on the texture of couscous and then cook it in the skillet with veggies. I need to find that recipe and make it again. Thanks for the reminder!

I love me some cauliflower. I love that it is so cheap this time of year too! I love to mash it like potatoes with just some salt and pepper and a little butter.

I should really give cauliflower a shot. I HATED it as a kid..but I think my mom would basically only steam it, and then serve it plain. blech!

I JUST had steamed cauliflower last night…it was so bland and I was OVER it :D I totally wanted a new way to cook it to give it another shot, perfect timing Thank You!!

I’m sorry about your camera- but the lunch photos look great to me :)

I do like cauliflower, but not on it’s own. Either pureed (mashed potato style) with wasabi or baked with cheese. Probably a lot less healthy, huh?

I don’t eat cauliflower that much…I bet I’d like it if it was prepared like that, though!

Rachael Ray has a tasty recipe for Cauliflower with whole wheat penne. You basically mash the cauliflower with chicken stock, parmesan and rosemary, and make a sauce out of it. Of course I probably add way too much parmesan. Soo yummy!

Ooooo the gratin looks amazing! I’m starting to like cauliflower more than I used to, it’s growing on me.

Congrats on the new job! Hooray!!

I recently substituted mashed potatoes with mashed cauliflower! it is so yummy. Just microwave with a little bit of water until the crowns are smooshy. Then add a cheese topping if you wish or eat it with no topping! It is delicious!

I found the only way to love cauliflower is the same as brussels sprouts…..ROASTED! I toss them with a little olive oil, garlic and cumin, then roast them until they’re nice and golden. When they come out I squeeze fresh lemon juice all over. De-LISH! ;p

Booo I’d be so bummed if I had to go back to my old camera too. You can’t goup in quality and then have to go back down again, it’s just too darn disappointing! I’m crossing my fingers for your precious cam though ;)

Cauliflower is da bomb. I love eating it mashed. I may just have to try that recipe though, WOW.

Love cauliflower–roasted, mashed, steamed or raw.

Don’t be too bummed about the pics, they really aren’t that bad!

Hi!
i’ve been reading the blog for a while and you are truly an awesome woman. You are the perfect role model for someone trying to live a healthy and BALANCED lifestyle. I’m an 18 year old college student and i am very interested in health and nutrition. i am wondering what you do at Harvard? Does it have anything to do with nutrition? i am a business major but i would love to get a job that incorporates anything that has to do with health/fitness. If you have time could you email me what your job entails or any ideas that you have for jobs to look into? ha sorry this is so long! thanks.

@Brooke: Currently, I work for the Office for Educational Programs as well as the Master of Public Health degree program at the Harvard School of Public Health. I have a kind of nerdy job here, where I do a lot of computer and web stuff. My new job is at Harvard College working in the Dean’s Office. I’m not 100% sure what the job entails quite yet, but it sounds like a lot of meeting and reception coordination!

As far as a health/fitness job, you might want to contact Kath (from katheats.com) about potential careers in the nutrition/health world or Chandra (from http://onebodylifechance.wordpress.com/) about fitness careers. They’re much more informed than I am! Hope this helps! :)

Tina January 7, 2009 at 9:54 am

@MizFit: I bet I would like those! I’m going to google a recipe! :)
