Exercise TV

I successfully exercised last night, and I didn’t even need to leave my apartment! (Thanks for those little pushes, by the way!) Actually, I did leave my apartment to workout in our building’s gym, but it was packed! (Well, I considered “packed” more than 5 people!) I wasn’t in the mood to wait for a treadmill or elliptical… I just wanted to get my workout started, so I could check it off my list. I own various pieces of exercise equipment (dumbbells, Bosu, resistance bands), so I decided to exercise in my apartment.

I’ve used Comcast’s Exercise TV on demand workouts in the past, but usually they’re not that challenging for me. Last night, however, I discovered a quickie 20-minute bootcamp workout that was tough! It was called “Cardio Mix” from the Biggest Loser. (You can find it under ‘Popular’). Description: Rev up your fat-burning engine with Bob’s bootcamp workout that challenges every major muscle for a total-body slim down. It was much harder than I expected it to be! I was dripping with sweat by the end!

I followed-up the Cardio Mix workout with 10 minutes of core work, and 20 minutes of Hatha Yoga from yogadownload.com. It was a pretty good workout, especially since I seriously considered skipping it!

About Exercise TV

Working out at home just got easier with ExerciseTV on demand! ExerciseTV is a free television service, available to digital cable subscribers. Each month you can select from hundreds of workouts from top trainers and across all fitness categories, like abs, dance, cardio, yoga, walking and more! Just go to your on demand menu to find ExerciseTV. If you’re having trouble locating ExerciseTV contact your local cable provider.

Breakfast

My morning bowl of oats was a wonderful blend of banana, raisins, oat milk, ground flaxseed meal, and Barney Butter.

In the mix:

  • 1/2 cup dry oats
  • 1 banana, sliced
  • 2 tbsp raisins
  • 1 tbsp gound flaxseed meal
  • 1/2 cup oat milk
  • 1/4 cup water
  • 2 scoops BB

I’m also brewing some hot coffee to go. I’m trying out a new flavor this morning: New England Coffee’s EyeOpener Blend. Sounds like it will perk me right up!

Question of the Day

Do you use exercise DVDs/programs to guide your workouts? If so, what are your favorites?

I have never even looked at Comcast’s exercise section, now I will! My fiance drinks that coffee every morning about six “coffee” cups worth – caffeine doesn’t seem to effect him. Have a good day!

I love Jillian Michael’s 30 day shred. It’s only 20 min and you wonder how that can be a workout but it leaves me sore for 3 days! I like to alternate that and running.

Great idea to check out workouts on demand… I will have to try exercise TV next time we’re snow-bound! In terms of DVDs, I used to be into Tae Bo. I actually haven’t done it in a while, but it’s a great workout to have on hand.

I’ve never used Exercise TV before. I think I still prefer to go out of my home to exercise, but when the weather is bad outside, this is a good way to get something done indoor. Glad you had a great workout!

I don’t exercise with my TV b/c I don’t have enough space in my living room to do it! I have been thinking about getting yoga DVDs for my computer. I think I could squeeze a session in my bedroom…

Hey girl! We’re using that same coffee this week. I laughed seeing New England coffee in South Carolina ;) Loving the exercise TV- its great to have the at home option! Have you tried Jackie Warner’s core video on exercise tv? She moves through the moves a little quickly but I loved the workout

I’ve done some DVDs, but I noticed I sometimes just wander off in the middle of them, put some laundry in, whatever. SO, I don’t think they hold my attention well enough, but maybe I haven’t been doing the right ones.

LOVE Exercise TV. It is a great way to exercise when you a. Lack gym motivation, b. There is bad weather or C. The gym is too crowded. I have actually done that same workout as well as another Biggest Loser one and was also amazed by its difficulty. No wonder the contestants drop so many lbs!

Im not usually a fan of the dvd or tv workout but life has made me more so lately.

Im smitten with my RODNEY YEE dvds.
entirely.

mmm!!! I love how the oats are thicker! I always tend to make mine on the drier side. YAY for getting your work out in! Sometimes getting out the door doesn’t necessarily have to happen:)

i hate going to the gym when there are a ton of people there… especially when you have your own personal gym waiting for you in front of the tv!

i really like windsor pilates dvds. even though it’s sort of dumbed down, mainstream pilates, it works! and it you order the package of like, 4 dvds or something, they send you a new one every month to switch it up!

hooray for home exercise!

Cindy Crawford: The Next Challenge is an old go-to dvd for me.

I also LOVE Gilad Abs Workout dvd.

I currently have P90x and Jillian’s 30 day shred which I have not tried either of them, but the weather is sketchy tonight after work so I’m skipping the gym and going to do the 30 day shred combined w/ Gilad abs workout for a good hour or so workout tonight!

I’m really into Cathe Friedrich’s DVDs – her step aerobics and kick boxing ones in particular. They’re definitely advanced and I always feel like I get the best workout from them. Wish I could afford more!

Good job working out!

I’ve heard Bob and Jillian’s workout are pretty intense, but I haven’t tried them yet.

I use some yoga video tapes, audio workouts, and I have one really good ab workout video I like. I need more good ones, though!

I can’t stay focused working out to the TV, especially with all the things in my apartment calling out to me — BED, COMPUTER, RESTING! Has to be a gym for me!

I agree with others who like the Biggest Loser and Rodney Yee’s yoga DVD’s. I also like Turbo Jam’s Kick,Punch, and Crunch DVD, which is more kickboxing than dance-y like other T.J. vids, and the DVD’s from Women’s Health magazine are great for combining interval cardio with combo strength moves. Their “Ultimate Fat Burn” DVD is about 40 minutes and keeps my heart rate at 70-90% for almost the whole workout!

I have no choice but to work out at home, with 2 young boys. I love Jillian Michael’s 30 day shred, level 3 and then I always follow it up with Jackie Warner, one on one lower or upper. I do alot of the yoga workouts on Comcast High Demand, it is very convenient!

I use DVDs in the winter when it’s too cold for me to be outside!

I love The Firm workouts, especially the newest versions!
I don’t have digital cable, but I do have Netflix, and try out new DVDs all the time through them. That way I can buy them if I like them, or just return if I don’t.

I’m bad about workout DVDs, I just keep buying them…. but some of the ones I really like are Jari Love’s Slim & Lean (strength training, quite challenging), anything by Ellen Barrett, and Mari Windsor Pilates. I also have Turbo Jam but I haven’t gotten into it too much, the woman annoys me and I have to be in the mood to “dance.”

I’ve occasionally used an exercise dvd (like if I don’t want to go out because the weather is bad). I use Self’s Slim & Sleek Fast dvd, which I really like because it has a ballet influence to it, and I did ballet for years. Also, on their magazine’s website they have a bunch of little workout videos you can watch online. They can be fun to do when you want to mix it up.

I love doing the TWC Exercise OnDemand workouts. I like doing the new ones so I’m not really loyal to any one. Two of the hardest ones I’ve done were the Jillian Shred and a workout with Michael Carson that I don’t see on there right now. He was holding a 2 pound ball–kind of similar to the quick cardio blast, just different equipment.

I have 2 yoga DVD’s that I love – Yoga for Athletes and Iron Yoga. Iron Yoga combines dumbbells with yoga. It’s great for toning, and my shoulders/triceps are always sore afterwards. Barney Butter – yum!

I got Jillian Michaels’ 30 Day Shred for Christmas and I love it! It’s only 20 minutes and goes through cardio, strength and abs! I usually burn btwn 160 and 200 cals in that time which I think is pretty awesome!!

I am a big fan of some of the ab workouts on TWC Exercise TV. I like the fact that I can pick a different 10-15 minute workout each time which keeps things interesting so I’m not doing the same sets of crunches, situps, whatever over and over again.

My two favorites are Jari Love’s Ripped 1000 and Cathe Friedrich’s Cardio Max mix. Both are about an hour long and have a good mix of cardio and weights. The Jari Love DVD is mostly weights with some high intensity cardio segments thrown in, and the Cathe DVD has some sports and speed drills thrown in towards the end. I love the way they are segmented and I never get bored!

HAHAHA! I’ve made Chris do that Bob workout with me sometimes! “I LOVE Bob, I LOVE Bob, I LOVE Bob”

I like Exercise TV for those times when I need to fit something in quick, and despite Melissa’s (Trying to Heal) dislike for the MTV Power Yoga, I have the MTV Pilates, Power Yoga, Yoga and Pilates Mix DVDs, and I really like ‘em

Have a good day Tina!!!

Exercise TV sounds like an awesome feature of digital cable. I don’t think they have anything like that on our cable up here. Although, I don’t have digital anyways, so it wouldn’t matter.

The only exercise DVD’s I use are my Windsor Pilates ones, that include resistance band work. I would like to pick up some yoga DVD’s sometime.

Hi Tina! I workout almost entirely from my living room using DVDs and a lot of ExerciseTV. I agree that many of the cardios aren’t sweat inducing.

Recently I found Less is More Cardio with Cindy Whitmarsh. I think it’s under the New Year New You section. It’s 30 minutes, and I am always left sweaty and breathing heavily.

Natalie January 27, 2009 at 12:56 pm

i’ve recently started doing P90X workouts when it’s too cold to run (the kickboxing, plyometric, cardio, yoga, and ab ripper x ones). I’ve also been doing the biggest loser weight loss yoga and biggest loser cardio max. i highly recommend all of these. i always though i could only get a good workout in if i went for a run but these are kicking my butt and making me sore, it’s a good feeling :)

Reply

Liz January 27, 2009 at 1:00 pm

I used to do them, but not as much anymore because I have tons of classes available to me at my school’s gym. I’d much rather do it in a class than at home. Gotta separate the workouts from the place where I relax.

Reply

Danielle January 27, 2009 at 1:06 pm

I do sometimes use the on demand feature, if i just don’t feel like leaving or if the weather isn’t great, or if it’s too early or late to go to the gym. It’s been a while since I have used one but I do like trying new things, I was actually thinking of doing a yoga one this weekend.
