High Maintenance
I can be so high maintenance when it comes to coffee!
I worked as a barista at Starbucks for about 3 years, so I am familiar with all of their drinks and customizations. And, of course, you guys know that I love to be creative with my food! Beverage customization just comes naturally to me!
Check out the doozie that I ordered this afternoon:
If you wanted to order this drink, you would ask for a “decaf, tall, sugar-free vanilla, soy milk, misto.” Okay, that is totally ridiculous! I admit it! In plain English, the drink that I ordered is half decaf coffee, half soy milk with vanilla flavoring added in. Anyway, this is part of my afternoon snack.
Since we are on the Starbucks subject– has anyone tried this Espresso Truffle beverage? Apparently, it is Starbucks Signature Hot Chocolate with a shot of espresso. Sounds divine!
Lunch
Today’s lunch was another grab-and-go at 7:45 this morning. I need to try a little harder in the lunch department!
Part one of lunch was a toasted Van’s waffle with Teddie peanut butter spread on top. I left my waffle in the toaster oven a little too long and the edges burnt! Thankfully, it smelled like a toasted pastry, so no one in my office complained. I’m sure you office people are with me about the burnt popcorn smell! It’s gross and lingers for-ever, right?
Lunch also included vanilla Stonyfield yogurt with chopped apple, cinnamon, and sliced walnuts.
The yogurt combo was a mushy mess! It wasn’t pretty, but it tasted great!
With waffle and PB…
My high maintenance coffee is holding off my hunger well. I have a JamFrakas bar if I get the grumbles later on this afternoon.

My boyfriend tried the espresso truffle drink and LOVED IT. And he hates coffee in general. I personally don’t think it’s worth the calories (I don’t like mochas in general).
on Dec 4th, 2008 at 2:56 pm
My co-worker actually just walked by my desk with popcorn and its still lingering around here. Its funny how the popcorn smell seems to be the strongest in any office space.
on Dec 4th, 2008 at 2:56 pm
yesterday i ordered a grande, decaf, sugar free vanilla, extra hot, extra foamy, misto…. YIKES!
on Dec 4th, 2008 at 2:57 pm
When I sat on another floor, one of my colleagues made popcorn at 4:00 every single day. I love popcorn, but it got to be too much!
on Dec 4th, 2008 at 2:59 pm
That drink looks so good! I always thought being a barista sounded like a lot of fun.
on Dec 4th, 2008 at 3:00 pm
Lots of water! Nothing annoys me more than when my skin is dry and flaky. WInter is the worst for that.
on Dec 4th, 2008 at 3:02 pm

Kelly,
The Don’t Get Sick article is at the middle/bottom of the page– right after the skin article.
on Dec 4th, 2008 at 3:11 pm
I get that drink a lot, especially at night when I don’t want to stay up…it’s so worth the long-winded order. I’m glad to be at home to make my food! My friends who work in offices HATE when people make wierd smelling food- or when other co-workers comment on their food!
on Dec 4th, 2008 at 3:18 pm
Oh the popcorn smell kills me, even if its not the burnt smell the regular smell makes me hungry haha.
Papaya is supposed to be really really good for your skin, I believe it is the enzymes. Best trick though is using a mask to exfoliate I’m a makeup artist (part time) so I have to work with skin care products pretty often. It makes such a difference! You just smear it on once a week and leave it on for 10 min, you just look pretty funny for those 10 min so be prepared to be laughed at.
on Dec 4th, 2008 at 3:24 pm
I LOVE burnt edges on waffles – yum!!
I’m a total skin freak. No matter how tired (or otherwise unconscious
) I am, I HAVE to wash my face and moisturize every night. I also make sure I drink plenty of water and I rarely lay out in the sun. It’s working so far
on Dec 4th, 2008 at 3:34 pm
hi Tina! I love your blog and have followed it for a long time. I especially love the whole carrots and carrot cake combo idea.
Happy day!
on Dec 4th, 2008 at 3:35 pm
I LOVED the Espresso Truffle drink! I kinda wish it wasnt so good so that I wont be tempted to get it again and again – yikes! Has anyone tried the salted hot chocolate? It sounds weird but it strangely works.
on Dec 4th, 2008 at 3:36 pm
Haha, no worries!! It’s good that you’re taking advantage of the beverage customization
***Keeping my skin healthy & beautiful = drinking TONS of water, eating lots of produce, and using an olive oil-based cleanser.
on Dec 4th, 2008 at 3:38 pm
I love Venti, non-fat chi latta YUMMY i might need to run out and get one now…
on Dec 4th, 2008 at 3:41 pm
Haha, I had popcorn at work yesterday and I went to another floor to cook it because the people I work with hate the smell too. I never burn it though
I always have a mouthful order when I go to ‘Bucks too, it’s half the fun. And in the summer, I say “iced” so that just throws another word in the mix, haha.
on Dec 4th, 2008 at 3:41 pm
If I pay $4+ for a drink, you bet your butt I’m going to customize it!
on Dec 4th, 2008 at 3:48 pm
I’m with BethT…and you, tina!…if i’m going to buy a drink that i can’t really recreate at home, i want it customized all the way to town! good for you. it sounds delicious. i love soy milk lattes/mistos with SF vanilla. so good.
love the vans waffle…they’re great!
on Dec 4th, 2008 at 3:50 pm
I always feel so long-winded when I order a drink at Starbucks but it’s worth it to get exactly what you want.
Speaking of Starbucks… I may have to get just a part-time job next year when I’m at nursing school. I have considered Starbucks. Did you like working there, Tina?
For nice skin, I drink tons of water and eat lots of fruits/veggies and get in some healthy fats. I also stay out of the sun and always use a moisturizer that has spf 15 or higher. If I’m running outside I use SPF 30 or 45 because my skin is really fair and sensitive. Those are my top tips.
on Dec 4th, 2008 at 3:54 pm
Amy,
I did a lot! My ultimate goal in life is to work at Starbucks part-time, raise a family, and blog!
I’d totally do it if it paid the bills!
on Dec 4th, 2008 at 4:01 pm
funny story, a girl here at my job made popcorn and overcooked it, while the lunchroom is a good distance away we dont smell it, but when the firetrucks showed and all the good lookin firemen began suiting up, people began to wonder. Come to find out, the electronic smoke detector is poised directly above the microwave and when she opened the popcorn and it began to smoke…it set the sensitive alarm off!!! In a company of 400 people…to know you did that would be pretty embarrassing.
on Dec 4th, 2008 at 4:04 pm
I’m always responsible for the burnt popcorn and everyone notices.
I get e-mails about it even!
Personally, that lunch looks very good! Non-traditional lunches are fun.
I use anti-aging stuff and have since I was 17. I also use eye cream and moisturize the crap out of my decolletage morning and night! I like using alpha hydroxy stuff at night and some primer with SPF in the morning before using Bare Escentuals, which has SPF in it.
As for the bod – I love putting body oil on in the shower and use Aveeno at night.
on Dec 4th, 2008 at 4:16 pm
Hey Tina, I tried the espresso truffle drink, it tastes like rich hot chocolate. I dont think I’ve had their signature hot chocolate so I cant really compare the two. But the espresso truffle tasted just like a rich hot chocolate. It was good, but not $4 good!!!!!
on Dec 4th, 2008 at 4:20 pm
Hey Tina, I worked at Starbucks for 2 years during college
Don’t you hate paying for coffee when you used to get it free?
on Dec 4th, 2008 at 4:22 pm
Tina, is there a huge difference in taste to have a misto rather than a latte? And is it any cheaper?
on Dec 4th, 2008 at 4:25 pm
Mandy,
I think a misto and latte taste very similar, but the misto is less heavy in my stomach. All of the milk in a latte seems to upset it for some reason. The main reason that I order mistos is because of the price! It’s usually around $2.25 or so for a tall, which is almost $1 cheaper than a latte.
on Dec 4th, 2008 at 4:29 pm
I worked at Starbucks during college too.
I could carry full benefits with part-time hours, not to mention free food and coffee. How can you beat that? I miss that free pound of coffee every week! I tried adding a shot of espresso to my hot chocolate before. It’s good! Just like a sweeter mocha.
I thank good genes for my skin. I also avoid the sun because I break out into a freak rash.
on Dec 4th, 2008 at 4:33 pm
Ok the espresso truffle is probably my favorite starbucks drink EVER… I was a barista for (gasp!) 8 years!!
on Dec 4th, 2008 at 4:35 pm
I love burnt waffles and strive to get them like that!
on Dec 4th, 2008 at 4:39 pm
I eat only dairy from cows that have not been treated with rBGH or rBST – both of which cause me to break out with cysts, very painful and disgusting. I tend to not eat a lot of meat so I rely on dairy products for protein – thank goodness I figured out what the culprit was – although it took quite some time. My skin has never looked or felt better.
on Dec 4th, 2008 at 4:40 pm
your starbucks just made me crave some hot chocolate! yum.
those kids larabars look intriguing as well. i think it’s ‘jamfrakas’, not ‘jamfrankas’, although neither of them make much sense to me
on Dec 4th, 2008 at 4:51 pm
I always have wanted to work at starbucks. I’ve never tried that drink, I’ve actually never had a misto, I usually just stick to lattes and coffee.

Hi Tina! I absolutely love your blog. I’ve been following it for a little while now. I’m 16 years old, and you have been so inspiring. I’m a runner too, so I love hearing about everything!
That misto looks so good! How much was it?
on Dec 4th, 2008 at 5:23 pm
Very funny, I have a girlfriend who is such a starbucks diva! It’s hilarious to hear her order! Cool link for the skin savers, Woo!

on Dec 4th, 2008 at 5:28 pm
How are the JamFrakas bars??? I haven’t tried one yet… I saw you on iateapie.net!!! Yay! Thanks for adding me to your blogroll, you’re going up on mine right now! Love your blog!
on Dec 4th, 2008 at 5:29 pm
Haha, I love your drink order! There are days that I totally feel like my order is out of control like that! You guys are making me want to work at Starbucks, I may just have to look into for my final semester!
As for skin tips, a good moisturizer (oil of olay is my fav!) and lots of water
on Dec 4th, 2008 at 5:51 pm
I love coffee and I was a Starbucks fan until the prices increased, they are ridiclous
on Dec 4th, 2008 at 5:55 pm
Mmmm PB and waffles yum! Oh and since you worked at starbucks maybe you could help me with this. I love the hot green tea latte with soymilk but sometimes it taste too milky how could have have them make it so that it doesnt taste this way? Should I ask for more matcha powder? Or maybe half water half milk? It doesnt seem to happen when I get a tall more so when I get a grande. Is it possible to ask for more matcha powder I think I would like that. Anyways thanks for help you give! =)
on Dec 4th, 2008 at 6:12 pm
my starbucks order is just ridiculous: “double tall nonfat extra hot one-pump sugar free vanilla latte” hahah. i get it so often that it just rolls off my tongue!
on Dec 4th, 2008 at 6:59 pm
I was going to try the espresso truffle yesterday, but changed my mind at the last minute to get the pumpkin spice latte, which I personally thought was kind of gross
How much milk is in a misto compared to a latte?
on Dec 4th, 2008 at 7:02 pm
I saw that same article a couple days ago and was going to post the same thing.
I love good nutrition/ health/ beauty/ fitness articles.
on Dec 4th, 2008 at 7:19 pm
I love the signature hot chocolate, and love adding espresso shots even more. Sadly, however, Hungry Girl crushed my love of this drink when she sent out the nutrition stats for it! Bah.
My skin gets SO DRY in the winter, so I have to moisturize multiple times a day. It also really shows in my face when I don’t get enough sleep (dark circles, bags, breakouts, etc.), which of course is sort of inevitable this time of year (finals) so I try to sneak in naps whenever possible.
I still have yet to try a misto… are they that different from au laits?
on Dec 4th, 2008 at 7:32 pm
Hey Tina!
I’m a Barista at Starbucks! It’s my 3rd year working there and I love it. Your drink does not seem high maintenance to me. You should hear some of the orders I get.
1/2, SFV ,N, 8SPL, 140 degrees, L!!!!
on Dec 4th, 2008 at 7:36 pm
Jen- The hot green tea latte is supposed to come with 1/2 water 1/2 milk. Sometimes Baristas will put all milk and no water b/c a lot of customers like it that way. Make sure to ask for the water. Same thing happens with Chai Tea Lattes
on Dec 4th, 2008 at 7:46 pm
I tasted the expresso truffle drink and it’s really good but too rich for me. I can only take so much chocolate milk.
on Dec 4th, 2008 at 8:27 pm
I tried the espresso truffle sans whip last weekend and LOVED it! It’s a good thing for me that Starbuck’s is across town!!
on Dec 4th, 2008 at 9:27 pm
Very CReative on your lunch Tina. Fo my skin… I exfoliate daily and try to dink lots of fluids and keep it moisturized.
zesty
on Dec 4th, 2008 at 9:47 pm
I think your HM coffee sounds delicious!
on Dec 4th, 2008 at 10:14 pm
Oh ok Sara thanks so much, I guess that explains why sometimes it taste milky and sometimes it doesn’t!
on Dec 5th, 2008 at 8:19 am
A good sweat! Gets and keeps the toxins out of the skin. And don’t skimp, get the good high end cleansers because they will help keep your skin clear and glowing.
And take your vitamins!
on Dec 5th, 2008 at 8:37 am
OMG, 2 girls at my work eat those 100 calorie popcorn packets every single day… the whole floor smells like popcorn for hours and because there is 2 of them, by the time the smell goes away, the next girl pops hers in. Arrgh.
Thanks for the article on skin treatments. Mine has been terrible lately!
on Dec 5th, 2008 at 10:14 am
Runeatrepeat,
Yep! I miss the free pound of beans a week too!
Sara,
I think it was $2.21.
Lida,
A misto is 1/2 coffee, 1/2 steamed milk. A latte is almost all steamed milk with foam and a shot of espresso. And I agree with you about the pumpkin spice latte! Not a fan!
on Dec 5th, 2008 at 10:53 am
Haha random but you could call it a “Malzone” (instead of Mal’s calzone)!
I have had starbucks hot chocolate with a shot of esspresso before they came out with the Esspresso truffle…it was rich and delicious. Great for when I was craving hot chocolate but needed a little boost too!
Well I use pro-active for my skin, I started in college to help acne and it worked amazingly so I’ve been afraid to stop using it since I hardly ever break out anymore! And surprisingly it did no dry out my sensitive skin!
I’m pretty sure my ultimate goal in life is really similar to yours!! Why does money always have to get in the way. I have also been thinking about a part time Starbucks job too! Although I dont know if I have time.
on Dec 5th, 2008 at 2:21 pm
I just wanted to throw my hat into the “former starbucks barista” ring.
Man, I miss that free pound of coffee. and I am with you, my dream job would be working at Sbux part time, and blogging the other part!
on Dec 5th, 2008 at 3:00 pm
Ooooh, I’m really happy to hear you guys all like or liked your experiences working at Starbucks! I’ve been thinking of applying to work some early morning shifts to supplement my “BUY A HOUSE” plan… so I love hearing you all are big fans and I like the sound of free coffee!!
