Guest Blog: Jon Reviews Frozen French Onion Soup

It seems that I can’t talk about grocery shopping now-a-days without hearing about the greatness that is Trader Joes. It’s all anyone can talk about. I’ve been there a few times and I have nothing against the place. I couldn’t do all of my shopping there, but I certainly enjoy a lot of their goods. I especially like their Trader Joe’s brand frozen foods.

I decided to venture in to Traders Joe’s the other day for no particular reason and I ended up leaving with a box of frozen French onion soup. This particular brand was not Trader Joes, but I bought it none-the-less. It was very cold out that day and the soup looked interesting enough, so I figured why not?

The first thing I noticed was the odd shape of the soup. I was a frozen cylinder of soup with a top layer of cheese. It almost looked like a Guinness. I followed the instructions and dropped the frozen soup-cicle into a (what I hoped) was an oven safe mug. After about 10-15 minutes, the soup was done. The cheese had melted nicely on the top of the mug and burned a little in the sides. In my opinion you can’t have French onion soup without burnt cheese.

I have to say the soup was great. It’s hard to find decent French onion soup in a can, let alone frozen. This stuff tasted like it could have been served in a restaurant. It wasn’t spectacular, but it was definitely better than any prepackaged French onion soup I’ve ever had. Definitely worth having in your freezer for a cold night.

I’ve seen that at the store but been hesitant to try it. Probably because I’m not the biggest fan of cheese and am skeptical of most frozen meals anyway- but French onion soup (complete with crusty cheesy goodness) seems like a bit more of a production to make myself or my mother (it’s her favorite) on a busy night. I’ll definitely pick it up as a special treat for us on a cold night. Thanks for keeping us informed!

wow that brings back memories; french onion soup used to be the only thing I would order at a restaurant when I was younger. That sounds divine for winter!

Wow…what an odd product! But if it really is good, then what a great idea! The shape alone will make people remember it. The only thing I would be convened about is the heat of the cup after microwaving the soup. Did you have to wait long to be able to pick up the cup?

I did have to wait, yes. I would say it was slightly hotter than heating a cup of tea in the microwave. You definately need to let it sit for a little. Since it’s soup you can’t really dive in right away no matter what it’s in, so it’s not that much of a hassle.

I have had this stuff before. I don’t know if it’s that brand or another but it’s awesome! I am a huge fan of French Onion and it’s better than some restaurants. I might have to see if there are any around here. Great review!

By the way, in addition to being delicious, this product is also completely vegetarian (says so right on the box!). That is rare for French onion soup, which in most restaurants is made with beef broth. I definitely recommend this product for vegetarians who love French onion soup but had to give it up when they stopped eating meat.

This is great stuff. I have been eating this for quite a while. I was buying it in box-sized bulk at Coscos because I could get more units at a reduced price, thus holding down my food costs. Now I am informed that Cosco is discontinuing stocking the product and it will no longer be available. Does anyone know where else I might be able to buy the product in that package size?
