Closet Case
I fell asleep on the bus this morning! Ugh, I totally had that bobble-head thing going. How uncool is that?! My friends, it’s a big mug of coffee day today!
My morning oats were a fun batch. The wide variety of flavors and textures kept me guessing each bite.
In the mix:
- 1/3 cup dry oats
- 1/4 cup canned squash
- 1/4 cup cottage cheese
- 1/2 cup water
- 2 tbsp ginger snap granola
- 2 tbsp raisins
- 2 tbsp Barney Butter
Workout
I was so pooped when I got out of bed this morning. I even considered going right back to bed, and skipping a workout all together. Somehow, I managed to run/walk 4 miles on the treadmill, followed by some easy stretching.
Run stats:
- Distance: 4.05
- Time: 40:00
- Pace: 9:52/mile
- Calories: 345
Super Closet Reorganization
I spent a good portion of my day off yesterday reorganizing my closet. Let’s just say it needed a serious makeover! I’d say most mornings, I stare into my closet and think: I have nothing to wear and/or I hate all of my clothing. However, I do have a lot of clothes!
I tend to keep sweats, workout gear, and other casual clothing (jeans, t-shirts, etc.) in heavy rotation, despiteĀ all of the nice clothing that I own, which usually just gets pushed to the back of my closet and the bottom of my dresser drawers. I typically buy pieces that I love, but either “save” them for a special occasion or they don’t end up coordinating well with what I already own. Instead, I end up wearing the same “go to” outfits over and over again! Yesterday’s mission was to organize, donate, and uncover some new cute outfits from what I already have in my closet.
(I was going to included a “before” photo, but my closet was just too messy for the blogworld to see. It was actually somewhat embarrassing!)
After:
The first step of my closet reorganization was seeing what I had. I pulled-out everything from my closet and spread it all over my bedroom. Next, I assessed what should stay and what should go. It wasn’t difficult getting rid of a few pieces, especially the ones that were old and grubby. However, the pieces that were in decent shape, but I rarely ever wore were much more difficult. I asked myself a few questions to decide whether to keep it: Do you love it, Do you feel good in it?, Is it flattering? If I answered ‘no’ to any of these questions, I donated the item. I know myself, and if something isn’t exactly right, I won’t wear it and it’ll just sit in my closet, taking up space.
After weeding out the good from the bad, I refolded everything, nice and neat, before putting it back into my closet. For me, the visual aspect of my closet is very important. I ordered my clothing by color– from dark to light– so I could easily see everything.
Then, I grouped and hung everything by category– pants with pants, skirts with skirts, dresses with dresses, etc. Organizing my clothing like this reminded me of quite a few pieces that I forgot about, which will definitely help me make some new outfits.
Finally, I added some finishing touches to organize all of the “stuff” that ends up on top of my dresser. I used this fancy plate to display my various perfumes.
I also added a basket “catch all” for more of those random things that end up sprawled across the top of my dresser.
Getting dressed for work this morning was much more enjoyable than usual! It was so easy to plan an outfit! I had never ordered my closet by color before, but now I understand why it’s so important! I feel so much more put-together when I am able to make an “outfit” instead of just throwing on some clothes. The extra effort of reorganizing my closet was totally worth it!
Question of the Day
On a scale of 1-10 (10 being the highest), how organized do you consider yourself?

Unfortunately, (or fortunately depending upon how you look at it) I am probably a 10. It is a little OCD… My boss definitely appreciates it, but it annoys others. I need to work on becoming a “7″.

Your closet looks so nice! Mine’s about 25% of that size and I’ve completely outgrown it. My jeans now sit in a pile on the floor next to it. Ohhhh tiny apartments.
I like organization and tend to know where everything is, but I have been known to let my bedroom because a disaster area. Once the clothes start piling up on the floor, there’s no stopping me from making that pile bigger!

I started organizing my closet by color in college and now I am so obsessed with it, that I hate when it goes out of place. It actaully helped when I had roommates, I would always know when they borrowed soemthing and put it back becuase they would never put it in the same spot.
ATTENTION ROOMIE THIEFS out there if you borrow from your roommates and do not want them to know about it, atleast have the smarts to put it back exactly where you found it, especially if they color code their closet!

Probably a 6 or 7.I am pretty organized but it still ends up getting messy after awhile at which point I have to reorganize it all again. Your closet looks really good though Tina!

I love that!! Come organize my closets!!
on Nov 12th, 2008 at 2:06 pm
Wow, your closet looks amazing!
Hmm, maybe a 7…I am organized but with room for improvement!
Happy 1/2-week day!
on Nov 12th, 2008 at 2:08 pm
HAHA!! I too get that “bobble-head thing” when I start to fall asleep – mostly in class
FABULOUS CLOSET!!!
**Scale of 1-10 = I’m a 9 (I’m a clean/organization freak).
on Nov 12th, 2008 at 2:08 pm
I just recently put a ton of clothes in a trash bag to give away to the GoodWill. I have sooo many clothes and still have more to go through so I have another empty bad waiting to be filled!
on Nov 12th, 2008 at 2:13 pm
I did this to my drawers last weekend…I fold eveyrthing so nicely but I swear like 3 weeks later things are just being shoved in haha…my problem = NEED BIGGER CLOSET! This summer I even bought a clothing rack from IKEA as a “closet extension” haha.
I wish I was a 9 but I’m probably more like a 6…I love being organized, but I fall off the wagon very easily at times. That is something I kNOW I have to work on when the fiance and I buy a house.
on Nov 12th, 2008 at 2:13 pm
Wow I am so impressed with that closet! I need to do that too…
I probably am an 8, I like to be organized, but it definitely does NOT always get priority in my life, haha…it has gotten better as I’ve grown older though.
on Nov 12th, 2008 at 2:20 pm
I’m probably a 7. I share a closet with my boyfriend that is the size of yours! This is trouble for a girl that had a huge walk in closet and big dresser before we moved in together. I clean the apartment top to bottom on the weekends and it stays clean for most of the week but by Friday, it’s definitely time to clean again!!

lovely bowl of oats
glad you managed to motivate yourself through a fabulous workout. and i really love that ‘M’ tray, its gorgeous.
im probably an 8+, because i go through periods of intense organization and then slack off for a few days. but my kitchen/desk is always organized. i just have issues with my bedroom because i have way too many clothing pieces!
on Nov 12th, 2008 at 2:42 pm
wooooooooo……. such a neat closet!!! I’d never be able to keep it that organized. Once for a while, I’d organize my closet, but after a week or so, the mess comes back. Well….not totally mess but not as neat as yours.
Super-close reorganization will be in my to-do list!
Great workout and breakfast!!!
I think I’m 8 in term of organization!
on Nov 12th, 2008 at 2:48 pm
I think I used to be an 8 or a 9 – but have gotten SO busy that I am now at about a 5 or a 6…my crap is EVERYWHERE in my apartment. It is driving me crazy….I will have to plan a major organization session for when the semester is over!!
on Nov 12th, 2008 at 2:56 pm
I am a solid 8. My closet could use help, but my TIME is managed to the milisecond and I plan out everything to an embarrassing degree. It makes me happy, so whether or not it’s impractical or dysfunctional doesn’t really bother me

Awesome job on the closet
I love organizing… when I’m not swamped at work and other life stuff I’m very organized. Recently not quite as much. Though I have bought some cute tupperware (smartspin storage system – I definitely recommend it) and some canisters for organizing the kitchen. I think my problem right now is that I’m living in a very small apartment. I wish I had a closet like yours!!
on Nov 12th, 2008 at 2:58 pm
I would have to say a 2. Also, I fall asleep on the train on the regular.
on Nov 12th, 2008 at 3:09 pm
Can I hire you to do my closet? I think I’m about a -10! HA!
on Nov 12th, 2008 at 3:09 pm
I would say I’m a 6…I would like to be more organized, but I definitely let it slip. And my husband is about a 3, so our house is quite messy sometimes! We’re working on it
on Nov 12th, 2008 at 3:23 pm
That’s the BEST lip gloss!
I’m a 7. I like things to be organized and I feel much better about myself when everything is tidy… But sometimes, sleep and tv is more important =P

Tina,
I seem to remember you going to Cosi before for sandwiches/salads. If I’m right about you going there, and if you can remember, would you mind telling me the price range for their lunch meals? I can’t find that info online and my husband and I want to go to a new location that just opened but are on a tight budget so we want to make sure we can afford it before we drive 20 minutes to go there!

Sarah,
To tell ya the truth, I’ve never been there, but I’ve heard they have awesome food! If you go, please let me know how it is!

Everything looks So organized- what a refreshing change for a closet! I always feel so accomplished after a big reorganization project. Breakfast looks amazing today, I love it when there are lots of different textures to keep things interesting.
Oh no, asleep on the bus?! Didn’t miss your stop, didja?
on Nov 12th, 2008 at 3:52 pm
Your closet looks great! Tim Gunn would be very proud of you.
I would say that I’m about a 9 in terms of neatness. I usually make my bed before I go to work, keep dishes out of the sink, and clean up after myself. But I don’t lose sleep over it if I get lazy!
on Nov 12th, 2008 at 3:54 pm
I am uber organized… I love it. I go through my closet every six months to weed out items and reorganize so that I can actually get dressed easily in the mornings and I don’t keep things that I really don’t wear.
on Nov 12th, 2008 at 3:56 pm
Laughing about your bobble head bus experience because some lady was all up in my business while she slept on the bus today. She kept leaning into me and I was just waiting for her head to fall on my shoulder…
on Nov 12th, 2008 at 4:06 pm
Your closet looks great. I am a 8-9 with organization at work…at home,I am a 5
on Nov 12th, 2008 at 4:06 pm
wow, that is a good looking closet. and bowl of oats too. I’d rate myself a 9 in organizational skills most of the time, unless I’m uber tired or something it tends to slip a bit.
on Nov 12th, 2008 at 7:50 pm
I wish I was super organized… I am about certain things, but clothes not so much. My kitchen, however, is a different story!
on Nov 12th, 2008 at 8:06 pm
Wow, I’m impressed!
Your closet looks beautiful!
Mine is always about an 8. Everything has a place, but I don’t color code things.
on Nov 12th, 2008 at 9:48 pm
I cannot believe how gorgeous your closet looks. Seriously, it’s amazing. It depends on the area – I guess I’m about a 7 or 8.
on Nov 12th, 2008 at 11:11 pm
Sarah and Tina – The prices are Cosi are pretty reasonable. Sandwiches and salads are around 7 or 8 bucks each and you get a side of chips or carrots with it. It’s one of my favorite lunch places!
on Nov 13th, 2008 at 12:18 am
Your closet looks great. I love the feeling once things are organized BUT I am not organized so I give myself a 5. Used to be and I’m not sure what happened.
on Nov 13th, 2008 at 7:51 pm
seriously… i can’t even step in to my closet and can’t find cloth i am looking for…. this post really gave me motivation to organize my closet. thanks~
on Nov 13th, 2008 at 8:11 pm
Great post, Tina! I have a soft spot for stories about organization and big clean-ups. I am going to follow your example and start working on my OWN closet. Although now that I think about it, I’m not sure if I should start cleaning out my closet or the fridge first…
