Running Into Yoga
Bright and early tomorrow morning, I am taking a new class offered at Healthworks called “Running Into Yoga,” which is instructed by one of the personal trainers. The class is intended to be a combo 75-minute running and yoga session. The class begins with a moderate-intensity, 30-minute outdoor run with distance options ranging from 1.5-3 miles. The run is only intended as a “warm-up” to the main focus of the workout: the (indoor) yoga class. The yoga is 45 minutes of a PranaVayu series, a challenging Vinyasa series focusing on strength, stability, and flexibility geared toward the muscle groups that best compliment running.
This class sounds right up my alley! I love running and yoga… and I never stretch enough after running, so it sounds like the perfect combination of activities for me!
However, here’s the semi-bad news: I live in New England and the weather is unpredictable. Our early morning run, which starts at 6:30 am, could be cool, crisp, and wonderful OR freezing, windy, and miserable. Since seriously considering running the Hyannis Half Marathon in February, I’ve decided to not be such a wuss about running outside. I hate the winter, but so many readers have said that they enjoy running in the cold as long as they dress in warm layers… I thought I should at least give it a try. I plan to come prepared for anything tomorrow morning!
Here are a couple of articles from Runner’s World that explain how to dress for running outdoors:

Go you! Looks like a good start to the cold weather running. Don’t forget a hat and have fun!

Thanks for the tips! That class sounds like an awesome workout.

That actually sounds like a really really awesome class!
I’d hate running in the cold too, I can’t STAND the cold. At all. But I’m sure, bundled up enough, it could be quite refreshing. Especially if it’s one of those really crisp and sunny winter days, those are pretty lovely.

Oh wow, that sounds like an amazing class! I do some quick sessions of wii fit yoga after my runs so I can get some stretching in. This class sounds like it would be perfect! I’m currently looking for some cold weather running gear so that I can run this winter!

sounds like an interesting class! I find running outside isn’t too bad, as long as it’s above 20 or 30… layers are good, as are gloves and ear warmers! oh, and tissues

I’m jealous, that running/yoga class sounds awesome. I wish I had an option like that. As it is, I just do my weekly runs and follow them up with 15 minutes of yoga. Then on non-running days I do a longer yoga practice. It helps keep my body stretched and aligned so I feel better when running!

Wow, that sounds like a FABULOUS class!!
Thanks for the article links!! I love Runner’s World magazine :0)

Ahh I wanted to do that class so badly but I have class at 8…boo! Oh and rebecca is my trainer at hw’s and I think she is the trainer for that class. She is so much fun! Have fun…it shouldn’t be too bad out…last week at that time was rough though…right now it is beautiful out here in boston, isn’t it? Have a nice sunday!

Wow that sounds like such a great class! And kudos to you for doing the half marathon, that is quite the feat!

running and yoga. great combo! I always thought that yoga is good complement with highly intense cardio work. I do spinning and yoga!

That sounds heavenly. Nothing beats yoga after a run. Enjoy!

Great entry! I’ve taken some of the classes at my health club as a way to vary my routine with great results. But I have not tried yoga. Your message inspires me to check it out. Good information about “running for the weather.” It’s getting to be that time of year. This information may tie into an entry I’m going to do about “gift giving” to runners.

What a great class! Hope you enjoy it!

if you can find sosme type of shirt/layer that has a hood attached, that way the heat doesn’t escape out (i like this better than a hat) the class ounds great, good luck running outside

That sounds AWESOME. I ran 3ish (a lil more) miles this morning and then did yoga (but only 20 minutes). Yoga is so much more intense after a run. I think you’ll really enjoy it

That sounds like a great class! I used to do about 20 minutes of yoga after my runs. Haven’t been doing it lately though
And I’ve had a couple more aches/pains lately. Hmmm…I think I should start doing the yoga again after my runs! It probably does a much better job of stretching me out!

i am from new england too…and running outside dec-february is NOT comfortable so i totally understand you on that one-very unpredictable!!

That class sounds great. I need to do some yoga especially after a run like today 20 miler. And good for you deciding to run that half. I love running outside. My runs are never as good on a treadmill. But then again I live Texas where we start the day with 50 degree weather and then warm up to 80.

Wow what a fantastic class! I think I’m going to take a runner specific yoga class, but it doesn’t have the actual running component, I think that’s great!

That sounds like an awesome class! I wish it was offered up here on the north shore!
I tend to run on the treadmill in winter now but when I ran indoor track, I remember wearing gloves, lined pants, and just layers of t-shirt, long sleeved shirt, and running jacket along with a hat. They have cute ones now that your ponytail can stick through (I got one for Christmas last year… so handy!). Eventually you get used to it. Just avoid the ice. Nothing good comes out of running on ice. I have many scars to prove it.

That class sounds pretty cool, but I’m totally with you on the whole running outside thing – weather in Boston is just too unpredictable and I am also a bit of a wuss
Hope the weather is good tomorrow morning. Wasn’t today amazing?!

Wow! That sounds like an AMAZING class! I wish they offered it at my gym.

Oh my gosh, this post made me SO HAPPY because I would totally sign up for the Hyannis Marathon! THANK YOU!!! Running over the winter is a pain in the rump, but the slippery snow and ice only makes you so much faster once it melts. THANK YOU!
