Out of Shape

I consider myself an “in shape” person. I exercise most days of the week. I mix up my workouts. I break a sweat with the best of ‘em. However, I felt sooooo incredibly out of shape this morning while taking a pilates class at HW. For the first time, I tried Fusion Strength, a class that combines weight training with yoga and pilates-based movements, and, man, was it challenging!!! I struggled to get through the class, and I kept needing to stop and rest my abs… and the class was only 45 minutes! I’m scared to wake up tomorrow morning and feel how sore my abs are. I have a feeling it’s going to be one of those “it hurts to laugh” sorenesses!

Well, if I learned anything at all from today’s class, it’s that I need to majorly work on my core strength. I didn’t realized that it needed some improvement until taking this class. I have a feeling I will be visiting  Fusion Strength quite a lot in the future!

Breakfast

I scored a free drink coupon for Starbucks the other day, so I decided to take advantage of it this morning. At ‘bucks, I ordered a tall, soy milk misto, which I topped with cinnamon and nutmeg. The sweet, foamy soy milk was delish, and it instantly reminded me of autumn! :)

In the office, I made my usual instant oatmeal with fiber sticks, banana slices, and Teddie Super Chunky peanut butter. Delish, filling, and satisfying.

Question of the Day

How do you jump start your exercise routine when it starts to get boring? How often do you mix things up?

My morning is booked with back-to-back-to-back meetings! (Yikes!) Happy Thursday, all! The weekend is almost here!!! :)

It is tough to decide when to switch a routine. If you switch too early (less than 3 months) or too frequently you will not get the benefits of the routine you are using. If you switch too late (longer than 4 months) then it will really get stale and you body will get accustomed to the routine.

The best results I have seen is sticking with a routine for 3-4 months consistently. And consistently is the keyword there.

I usually have a glass of water with some Emergen-C 30 minutes before I workout to boost my energy and attitude to get my ass to the gym and have a good workout.

    good morning Tina!

To keep motivated, I change workout every 3 months or so. For example, I used to have step class twice a week, now i have two spinning class.

Your reviews of all the HW classes inspires me to try them out! I usually take it as a sign that I need to change things up when I’m not sore. Those “hurts to laugh, walk and breathe” days can be rough, but you know you did something!

Sometimes buying new exercise clothes gets me excited to work out again! I just started going to classes at my gym, and I love that!

I just try not to do the same thing 2 workouts in a row. Although I’m mostly running because I am training for a 1/2 marathon, I try to mix up arms, lunges, and abs with yoga and just dancing around my apartment! I would love to be able to fit in more classes at my gym, or maybe just get a new exercise DVD to do once a week. Any DVD suggestions??

Two workouts that get changed are my running and personal training because those are easy to change. The two martial arts I train in pretty much stay the same because I have no control over those, but that’s okay because I like them! :D

Congrats on your page views! Wooot! And the shepherd’s looks awesome! I’m seeing that everywhere I turn and it’s making me crave some in a huge way.

That Pilates class sounds challenging and fun! I try to switch things up often, but sometimes I get stuck in a rut!

I also am coming out of training for a half marathon, but I’m trying to keep at least some of that level of fitness for any race that might come up next…I don’t know why, but it’s hard for me to get tired of running…but I try to do other activities too, like rock climbing. I also am looking to get a couple new exercise videos (aerobics and cross-train) if anyone has any suggestions! There are so many, it’s hard to choose!

When I get bored I tend to search online for new ideas or open up Shape or Self magazines. Look at blogs, see what other people are doing basically, and try it out.

“How do you jump start your exercise routine when it starts to get boring? How often do you mix things up?”

Practicing/learning dance choreography can get really tedious, since it HAS to be the same moves, over and over; but for practices, when we’re focusing on an array of dances, it’s much more varied and fun.

And, when I’m with my personal trainer, we mix up strength moves and such.

The day after my first pilates class I thought I was going to die. It’s just such a different usage of muscles!

I’m with Ann, I know it’s time to switch up my routine when it doesn’t make me sore (strength moves) or doesn’t challenge me anymore (cardio).

I find the same thing when I haven’t done yoga in awhile. You’re just using so many different muscles in different ways!

Haha, if you’re feeling ‘out of shape’ taking that class, it’s safe to assume that it would kill me

I remember taking a boxing class at my local gym once, feeling so lost and confused but being too afraid to stop because I was worried of what people would THINK! how ridiculous is that. I applaud you for listening to your body! Who’s with me?

    AlliJag,

It’s actually from Bath and Body Works! I received it as a gift a few years ago, and it was filled with lotions, shower gets, etc. It works great as an oatmeal bowl though! :)

Hey I just want to let you know I LOVE your blog. I think it’s so much more realistic than other food blogs- as in your dessert intake, and how you go for 2nd-and 3rd- spoonfuls of PB (like me!).
